As to using cardboard, it works well. There is an nonprofit company that makes adaptive furniture for special needs children out of cardboard. They make slanted backed chairs, highchairs and other furniture that hold children, all out of cardboard. The will use multiple layers of cardboard, glue guns, paint and varnish. They have been in business for several years.

Mam, I am watching this on Feb 23rd, 2024. I live in a tiny tiny flat but I do need a small piece of furniture to hold my rubber stamps, ribbons, twine and a few other craft items. I have one small place left in my place to have a storage cabinet but, all are too wide that I see at the Goodwill. I have Surebond glue sticks on hand and Stanley packing tape, only need the foam core. This is so AMAZING! You such a unique individual creative person and you have a great personality for working with others. So happy I have seen this tonight. I am hoping to buy a small home by the end of this coming summer and to have light weight furniture to move is always a plus too. I think your bookcase would be beautiful with a nice pretty peal and stick wall paper just on the outside or just in the inside. This is a real game changer for me if that's the right wording. Living on a budget too this will not break the bank. Blessings, Rebekah in VA

Hi, Rebekah! So glad you liked this!!! And, if you are covering anyway... you could use cardboard - with so many boxes being thrown away all of the time, you could save more money by using discarded boxes for this project. Let me know how it goes and thanks for watching!

Thank you sooooo much. I live in an RV. I have converted the "bunk beds" into storage area, but I need some light weight shelving for my arts and crafts, as well as canned goods. This is going to be perfect with all the canned goods on the bottom shelves. Can't wait to start building, though I may add quarter rounds to the back and sides of each shelf.

I used to work at a co. that made store fixtures. They weight tested to point of collapse. Then guaranteed 200# less. But that means you'd have to make 2. As for using cardboard, I used to have a book on making nomadic furniture. Much of it was cardboard, though not focused on storage, their techniques would transfer. Can't remember exact title, nomadic was in it. I donated it after I bought my house.

You can turn virtually any stiff material, cardboard, foamboard, thick paperboard, etc, into a sturdy shelf by making a torsion box out of it. A torsion box is like those lightweight Ikea tables that have a fiberboard skin and cardboard honeycomb inside. Look it up online. Yes it's a little fiddly but the strength of the end product is worth the time.

That is a really good idea! Since they are light, they will be easy to take along. Here's a thought: to save space in your vehicle, you could create several individual foam boxes using Norrine's method, and make them graduated in size so that they will nest inside one another. When you want to stack them up, put the smaller ones on top of the larger ones and clip them together with binder clips.

I’m pretty excited about this! I bought 20 (or maybe it was 25-can’t remember now) sheets of foam core from DT for 25 cents each as they had been water-damaged. The foam was in perfect condition but the paper was a little water-stained in one corner. So if I make this, no, WHEN I do I can cover the water stains with contact paper to make it prettier and stronger. I am not sure what I will use it for, but looking at the shallow shelf behind you with the gutter, I’m imagining using those in there somehow, stair-stepped (so maybe three gutters per shelf) and use them to hold all my ribbons and washis? I also use a TON of funfoam and flipflops foam for crafting for my grandkids and Children’s Church so that might make for interesting-and-yet-perfect lighter-weight storage for foam, and for the bottom shelf I can use more foam to create several mini-shelves for paper storage? I will have to see about that, unless you have a tutorial for that? This is a fantastic Idea, what a terrific idea Norrine! How cute are you with your giddiness!!??

You know what this is perfect for? Fiber for spinning and felting. It is light, you can have all the colors and types of wool out where you can see them and if you run an elastic or even a piece of fiber board across about 1/3 the way up, you could move it around without taking everything off the shelf. So if you are spinning multicored yarn, you could bring the yarn outside with you, it will be secure in the shelf as you spin outside, enjoying the sunshine. You can change around your storage without moving everything off the shelf. I retro fitted thr trunk I have with foam shelves, and I will send you photos when it is done.

Rosemary Miller - i also love a bargain! Norrine always provides such amazing ideas, and they are budget friendly. If you have any old yardsticks they can be cut to your specific needs. Years ago I found a bunch of yardsticks in a Thrift Store that had been used to stir paint. All numbers were covered but they were in a rusty can labeled Free Firewood. I knew I would eventually find a purpose - this will be the perfect one. Also paint stir-sticks are usually free. I have quite a collection of stir-sticks. Furring sticks are not expensive but I prefer to limit trips due to health issues.

@kimatlastlooks29153 жыл бұрын
I love this idea but I'm curious as well, especially if you are taking weight off and on a shelf repeatedly. The weakest part is the glue at the joints. If you upgrade and get the thicker foam core, it will be even more solid. It's tough to cut, but it's strong stuff. I've made drawer dividers that are close to 2 yrs old that have held up well, but have had a few places where the glue came undone over the past year. I live in Texas where our humidity and temperature fluctuates. Not sure if that caused it or not. I love the concept and am looking to adapt this for my closet overhaul. (edited for clarity - ha!)

Your.excitement and happiness is contagious! This is super genius! And, just a note (not promoting but if access to Dollar Tree is not available), Wal-Mart sells foam core.

It may even be less at Wal-Mart!!!! All suggestions are helpful. Thanks, Sherri!

This is a cool concept. I used to work in a workshop where we taught the mentally challenged how did you different types of Peace work. We used to take boxes and the brown packing tape and make jigs to put things like paper and different things then and you'd be surprised how much those things held. Hadn't thought about that in years till I seen this video I wonder which one is stronger? I like the cardboard cuz it paints and you can put things like decoupage and stuff on it so easily what about foam core I've never tried to put anything on it to cover it can you use paint or can you decoupage on it?🥰🐞🤗
@TheCraftyOrganizer3 жыл бұрын
Yes! It's basically a foam sandwich between paper. It spray paints well (Just don't get it too wet) and decoupage would be perfect on it!

You had me cracking up through the video. I scored some cardboard trays that are very sturdy and this is the perfect way to create a cabinet to place them in once I clean and organize my craft room! Thank you for sharing this and giving the update on how it's holding up. It's greatly appreciated!

@@TheCraftyOrganizer 😊 I am really happy with the progress, tagged your IG! I started by making the big unit like yours as practice, and ended up getting really creative and I'm now a foam board fanatic haha.

Hello, Norrine. So my inventory for my Stampers Tool has a lot of vertical space left in my bookcase with inventory. I thought, what would Norrine do? I got some foam core and added two more shelves in each bookcase shelves. I felt so darned smart. Lol. Every time I reach for one of the tools, I think about you. You’re a foam board genius!

You have the most amazing organizational ideas...ever! Thank you bunches for all your ideas. I hope you have a half way decent day. I've been sick for 27 years with FMS ME/CFS, OA, RA, multiple internal issues and surgeries and tons of joint replacements and corrective surgeries. I've actually had 27 surgeries as well. I do so know what you go through. God bless you for it and all the work you do and to teach us on top of it. You are amazing!

For the dowel addition, you could cut circles in the sides and glue the caps into the holes
