Doing repairs on an old car. Several places on the convertible top have rotted out thread. I intend to replace stitching new thread a section at a time to follow original holes & manage consistent tension. Haven't done these type projects in a while so I needed guidance to refresh my memory. Watching your video demonstrating techniques & offering tips was very helpful. Avoid the knot after back stitching, you're never getting rid of that unsightly bump of thread on the edge now. Just back stitch and and cut the excess close to the leather. You can burn the bits of thread if you a lot left after cutting but be VERY careful doing this.

I back stitch then hide my line between layers of veg tanned... poke in excess thread with a dab of contact cemet, wipe immediately and hammer the bump when hammering your stitch ... no brown or black marks on the leather or thread ... CLEAN If its black thread or leather , sure , burn a black blob on it ... you still got plastic bumps on your stitch line Thin leather is thinner thread that you back stitch and leave the tail glued between the layers tight to the stitch line , finish with a bone

You can tie and tuck the knot up under the layers…. Kinda like the montrose stitch completion.

-Poking holes with a paint brush handle as a base is a great way to get a needle through your finger. -You only need to pierce the thread once when threading a needle. -Don't even get me started on the way you finished a stitch line! -Loved your skiving knife though!

I agree with koikoi below, that does not give a professional finish. At Hermes when I worked at the Pantin workshop, we always back stitched twice sometimes three times and cut the thread 3mm proud of the hole. Using a round awl dipped in leather glue, the end of the threads were then pushed into the holes to give a clean lasting, secure finish. This was then lightly hammered after to bed the threads.

A few remarks, please...Best to bevel before burnishing .....instead of water, make a simple solution of 5 parts water, 1 part hide glue...And not to be too picky, instead of old tee shirt, use white canvas...

Why don't you finish the stiching this way but on the inner side? I use do it that way so you can hide the little knot totally :)

Looks like a Vergez Blanchard compass. I have one and it is really TIGHT...hard to adjust the legs. In your experience, do these loosen up over time? Thanks for the video.

Not really, you can try to sand it a little with a fine grit/ polish it a bit and add a little oil

well when you glue the edges, that distance between the stitch and the actual edge (usually ~3mm) will be completely sealed and to do your method would defeat the purpose of the glue by stabbing through it. Instead I usually do a similar method but bring the needles inside and tie a knot there

Bloodaxetheirritable I do to. It makes no difference as all around the holes are still sealed. You could also seal the I side walls of the holes with glue, by glueing after making the holes.

Tip 6: Put some hockey tape over the tip of your thumb before smoothing down hot nylon/poly thread, so you don't end up with a blister on your thumb! ( "...that ain't workin', that's the way you do it!" ~Dire Straits, Money for Nothing) ;)

As others said here, Do not do the knot. Plus I don,t like securing thread onto needle. If U stitch a lot, you will see why.

@@deanbriggs5058 Well, U don,t want to secure the thread on the needle because if U keep the thread bent in the same place, it will weaken at that spot. Plus as U stitch U can slide the needle along controlling the length of the thread U pull thru each time. U can tighten the stitches as U go by tugging on the thread by hand. I,m not real great at explaining verbally. I hope U can understand this. Just ask what part is a problem and I,ll try again. Good luck.

I need to know how to make a genuine snake skin hat band. My hat is a really good quality leather hat. I recently acquired a genuine copper head snake skin that I really want to make into a quality band for my favorite Bullhide leather hat. Do you know how to do this? I don't know how old the snake skin is but it's really dry and I know it's uncured. Thanks for any help you can offer. It would be awesome if you were to do a video on this. Plus I'd send you my hat and snake skin if you want to make a video on this. There's absolutely nothing I can find on the subject. You could even embellish your own style on it. Also how much would it cost? I don't have a lot of money and I'm a Christian heavy metal musician. Thanks. God bless you.

There are videos here on youtube telling you how to cure the snake skin, but if its dried out get some glycerin and rub that into it until it turns soft then roll it up and follow the directions on how to tan it from the beginning of the tanning process.

The leathercraft academy No music. Explaining as you go is best. To be honest, I wasn't able to really learn anything from this due to you moving to quick or speeding up the video. Usually i can figure it out for myself, but i just found that some of the key steps were not shown clearly enough(I don't mean explained, just not filmed close enough to figure it out. If you dont want to talk you could use detailed diagrams, close up shots or slower speed.
