Discernment virtuous Emet of Emes is vital to prevent harm. Ignorance is not bliss for those it hurts. Please teach how a person asks for help I dure circumstances. Many victims are mistaught and believe God Forbid they deserve what they have experienced. The worst abusers do gossip and lie and lack of Discernment by others to be sensitive to someone often children who can hardly find the rights words or any at all because they have been so threatened and controlled. This needs addressing around the globe. ❤❤❤

Thankyou for pointing this out. Absolutely any case of abuse, be it verbal, emotional or physical must be reported and spoken about. There is no place in judaism for staying in abuse, one must speak out. There are many exceptions to lashon hara, which is why studying the laws of lashon hara is so important.

Good question, so it's my opinion that going to listen to comedians is not the most Godly thing to do. Mockery is a trait God tells us to stay away from. "Mockers are proud and haughty; they act with boundless arrogance." Proverbs 21:24 99% of comedians make you laugh by putting other people down. It maybe funny but it is wrong. It's an escape from our lives to feel better about ourselves for fleeting moments. Studies show comedians to be some of the most depressed people. It's because what they do is empty. I believe torah observant people have no place listening to comedians. Are kosher ones ok? Ehh. it's hard to be 100% clean when one of the only ways they make people laugh is by making fun of a person, situation, or stereotype. My opinion maybe extreme, others may disagree. But I believe God doesnt want us listening to comedians.

I was mistreated by 2 people in a position of power in my local Jewish community. I tried several times to talk to leadership about it, but they refuse to meet with me. I assume it is because they think well of them. There are other compounding factors as well that weaken my case. I spent a few months trying to get the leadership to talk to me about it & they refuse. I know it is a sin to talk badly about other Jews, and it is bad to gossip. I don't know what to do. I feel really upset & stopped going to a certain congregation because of it. People have asked me why & I tell them the truth. My thinking was, the people who could help won't meet with me in private, so it isn't private anymore. I don't know what the right thing to do is. Speaking truthfully about it still feels like lashon hara, especially since it isn't accomplishing anything.

Hello, first off I am so sorry to hear about this. My question is do you have a rabbi that you know outside of this community that can help you get an objective opinion? If the way these people mistreated you is in the category of abuse, essential to make it known. But it depends exactly what they did, a competent halachic authority has to be asked.

I asked two rabbis. One of them has visited my community before. Both of their advice was for me to move away. There is a history of repeated division in my community that stems back decades. One rabbi told me she believes the foundations of one of the synagogues has something spiritually wrong with it. I am inclined to agree. I have made a lot of jokes this year about it being cursed. I wanted to move away back in September/October because of how upset I was. Now there are some huge barriers to moving. I think G-d has more to teach me here. Perhaps I can do more as well before I do go. I suspect my inability to leave is because of a few prayers I prayed this summer, of wanting to help heal my community. My time here isn't quite done yet, I think. I think there will come a point where I do move away, but not quite yet.

I'll buy and read Sefer Chofetz; but since you've already read it can you share some answers? If a person is lying and those lies are convincing other people of becoming liars too and those lies are also hurting people, is calling the person a liar considered negative speech? What about not calling the person a liar and simply speaking the truth that proves the person is a liar? I think the answer is obvious, but that obvious answer--to call the person a liar, point out the truth--is almost always considered negative speech by the liar. So the follow up question, is negative speech about how it makes other people feel (negative or positive) or about what HaShem feels about the speech? And, who are we to judge how HaShem feels about speech when we only have our mortal feelings to know? Example, a person is engaged in racist speech. I point out the person is being racist, that person feels I'm being negative; but HaShem knows I'm being truthful. Is HaShem more concerned with how I make other people feel than about what I might do to help people realize the truth? What does the Sefer Chofetz say in this regard?

So to the first question.. is the lies this person is spreading giving another person a bad reputation? Like spreading rumors about someone else? If so, one is always allowed to clear up their name. You are allowed to be truthful about the negativity of another person if it is to save someone else from the harm they could potentially inflict on the people that are unaware. For example, if someone is dating a person, but you know something that is bad about the person they’re dating but they keep it a secret. You are allowed to warn them. Or a cheater in business you are allowed to warn their business partner is you know they are aware. This is ofc if you are 100% assured of the bad of the person. It’s not just an assumption. But if there is something that just bothers you about someone else that is negative, you can’t just tell people. Only if it is to save them from potential harm this person could cause them.

When watching your video, I questioned the obvious because as you're probably aware, throughout history, people have been wrong about a large number of things, ideas, issues. I'm aware of how people react to being told they are wrong--the social consequences are obvious. I was unsure if you were saying people need to be more concerned about how people react to being told they are wrong than on being truthful. You cleared that up, so thank you and I needed that to be sure I should buy the book.

@@DrD2You Good. That should be the standard regardless of one's faith, for human speech: no lying and no guessing/superstition on who is the liar use science and truth functional logic. I am in no way perfect, not even close, but I probably don't have to read Sefer Chofetz because it's only going to tell me what I already know, intuitively. I will get it though and read it because I'm working on my own book, non fiction, which is sure to be controversial and my main tikkun olam labor. I don't want to be a jerk about it.😇
