It's because the media is filming whatever people will watch, and politics is a thing. So they go into the worst urban slums they can find, where decriminalization, gang violence, and looting have destroyed or driven away all of the businesses, find that there are no grocery stores in those neighborhoods, and do elaborate human-interest pieces on American "food deserts", because people with a certain political mindset, actively want to watch stuff like that, and if somebody wants to watch it, the media will film it. And yes, it's true, there are neighborhoods with no grocery stores. They don't have any Apple stores or fashion outlets in those neighborhoods either. Go figure. The people who live there (gasp) have to go shopping in a different part of town from where they live. Which is a totally bonkers thing for an American to have to do, right? Everyone knows how much Americans hate driving.

Who the f says fruits/veggies are hard to get here? Seriously? Was it the Irish gal who gets 95% of everything wrong?
@jonadabtheunsightly2 ай бұрын
@@Mustangmom2k It's American rich white liberals, going on about there not being grocery stores in poor urban residential neighborhoods. Which is true, because literally nobody goes there to shop, for obvious reasons. But they want to make it a racism thing, because disproportionately many African Americans live in those poor urban neighborhoods. Which is also true, but irrelevant. So they find the little corner convenience stores or whatever that do exist in residential neighborhoods, and oh look boo hoo there are no vegetables because it's not a grocery store. And then they go on tirades about how the actual grocery stores aren't within walking distance, which is also true but completely irrelevant, because Americans don't walk to the grocery store, even if it *is* close enough, because you need your car to get all the groceries home, because it's too much to carry in one trip. But, you know, if Meijer and Wal-Mart are in the shopping district instead of the hood, that's racism. Because for liberals, everything has to be racism. I've never heard anyone who *lives* in those neighborhoods complain that they want to be able to walk to the grocery store and carry all the food home in their arms. But what they think isn't important, because poor people don't actually matter, they're just a tool that can be used to score political points.
@jmcg61892 ай бұрын
@jonadabtheunsightly There are "food deserts". Not that there aren't groceries - just that they're not near so that people without cars have difficulty getting there. They are not all in black areas. Strange that anyone would say fresh vegetables are hard to find. Pretty much every grocery store bigger than a mini-mart has a fresh produce section and it's cheap relative to the general price of food these days. Unless you go to Whole Foods and pay $20 for a carrot. 😂 Then there are farmers markets and at certain times of year roadside produce stands, where you can get really fresh local grown stuff. Plus a lot of people have vegetable gardens in rural, suburban and even sometimes in urban areas. There are veggies go leor in America. We're practically giving them away. 😉

I think it must be the effect of watching news or documentaries on "food deserts" in certain areas of large cities, and since most non-Americans have no idea of where those are, or their size/demographics in relation to the rest of the country, they get the impression that it's a common problem across the US. That probably goes for a lot of stereotypes and worries - if you see a lot of news items about guns, or obesity, or crime rates, but have no context, it's going to seem like it's a universal and constant problem everywhere. They just don't hear about normal life that isn't dramatized on the news or in tv shows. The media's like a fun-house mirror, it tends to distort and exaggerate a lot.

The USA is huge and has different growing seasons in different parts of the country. We grow stuff that is grown in other parts of the world too. Even in my local grocery store in the state of NC, we have purple potatoes from Peru. Fresh produce is sold not only in grocery stores and places like Walmart, but in big and small farmers markets as well as roadside stands.

Grocery stores definitely have fresh vegetable departments. The HEB that my brother takes me to in San Antonio has a humongous vegetable department.

Red Solo cups are used for parties and outdoor barbeques, picnics, etc. There are other choices but they are the big brand. We've only used them when we remodeled our kitchen, so could not wash dishes, lol.

Literally the same. We used solo cups and paper plates when we had a new kitchen put in, for the same reason. Otherwise just during parties and cook-outs. edit: I just remembered that we also used them during winter storm Uri when our water and power was out for most of a week.

These gap posts I see all the time crack me up. No one pays a lick of attention to the gaps. Why on earth would anyone say we don’t have produce? They must have shopped at some little place like a bodega in New York. Not only do we have massive fresh produce sections we also have frozen in huge freezer aisles. I won’t even bother trying to describe farmers markets. Thanks for trying to tell the world how we actually are. Side not just love your mom cooking different American dishes.

The reason for the the space at the bottom of the door and the sides is for cleanliness and ease of cleaning. No corners to accumulate dirt and it can be easily mopped. That is also the reason that public toilets are often wall mounted rather than floor mounted.

Because despite literally hundreds of videos here of Brits going grocery shopping here, not even one of those videos takes place at an actual grocery store. They go to Walmart and marvel at the selection, having no idea it's literally the worst selection of any grocery store in the country.

The supermarkets in the south are Publix and Winn Dixie as they are the most common. I believe piggly wiggly was here but not anymore. We also have a few key foods scattered around, a few el presidente supermarkets around, a few different Asian supermarkets, definitely Whole Foods, Trader Joe’s, and sprouts. Kroger only exists as a delivery service and Safeway had a single location which folded in less than six months. We used to have Albertsons but they were bought by Publix.

Red Solo cups appear almost exclusively at private dinner or picnic events, family get togethers, gameday parties, etc. No restaurant or any other public gathering, the fair, ball games, etc. serves beverages in Solo cups and is why you didn't see them in public.

America is a melting pot, so technically, there is more culture than most countries. Btw, I'd take a country fried steak with biscuits and gravy over and thousand year old traditional dish from anywhere.

Grocery chains are somewhat regional but you should visit one. I think you'll find even more fresh produce there. HEB (letters pronounced separately) is very Texas-specific grocery chain. So wherever you go just ask the locals which grocery stores to go to.

I've only lived in the northeast and midwest, and I can't recall ever seeing an "America" section of Walmart or Target, outside of a seasonal Fourth of July thing. Maybe for the olympics, but I don't recall that specifically. Maybe it's a Texas thing, which would make sense. Red solo cups are legitimately common for parties or barbecues but that's about it.

The solo cups are used mostly at home parties not restaurants, restaurants use use plastic cups for their brand or advertising, fun fact the ridges are actually measurements you fill it to a certain ridge in the cup and it's a quarter cup another is half cup.

On your next trip you should definitely go to a grocery store (or maybe several), a Dollar General store and a farmer's market (preferably an outdoor one that sets up once or twice a week).
@pamelabennett90572 ай бұрын
Also, know that the grocery store/supermarket will reflect the local community with the produce and other food it carries. In my small city one store on the north side of town has a huge Kosher section, as there's a fairly large Jewish population in that area. Another store about a mile away from me has a lot of Hispanic foods and produce, as well as Halal foods. There are also a growing number of ethnic grocery stores (Asian, Indian/Nepalese/Bhutanese, etc.) in the area.

Point to James for vocabulary- penultimate is a GREAT word. Red solo cups (we just called them solo cups before the Toby Keith song) are actually a real staple in our homes- I stocked up last week at the grocery because we are having people over soon and we will be grilling outdoors. Restaurants do not use them- but we do in our houses.

The cup thing is so funny. Interesting that the type of plastic cup you see in American movies has become a “thing.” Most Americans don’t think of those cups as any sort of iconic thing that represents us. They are just cups! 😊

So crazy about the red Solo Cups. Most Americans just see them as plastic cups they use at family get togethers, picnics, drinking parties in college, etc. We dont see anything special about them and most dont even know the Solo name. Sometimes they come in blue. They are used in drinking pong games but once again its just seen as a plastic cup. 😂

Do people from other countries really believe that Americans don't eat fresh fruits and vegetables? And that they aren't readily available here? That must be one of the biggest misnomers out there. Our grocery stores are well stocked with fruits/veggies. Plus practically every town and city have farmer's markets open on the weekends in season. And then there are people who just grow their own in their backyards in small garden spots.
