I did not have insurance, and was no longer eligible to be on my parent's plan. But I got the care and spent the next 70 days in the hospital in the ICU and the Rehab wing, and when all was said and done, I had racked up upwards of a Million dollars worth of medical bills. Fortunately because I suffered a permanent injury, I was eligible for Medicare and Medicaid after 6 months from my accident. Hospitals are legally required to provide emergency care to the best of their ability, this law went into effect in the 1980's during the Reagan administration. Hospitals will also generally provide discounted rates and payment plans to those that don't have insurance, but even with that a large percentage of these people will default on their payments. In addition to this the US also has charity and state teaching hospitals that will offer care at reduced rates or free, though these tend to be in mid size to larger cities. Many smaller towns and cities will have free clinics, we have one in the town of 10,000 people where I live, it is open a few hours per week and is currently located at one of the local churches, it had previously been located in a downtown building.

In fact, it's federal law that any company with more than 50 employees MUST provide health insurance. Whether people choose to find a plan through one of these many options and use it is up to them, but the idea that Europeans believe Americans are dying in the streets because "no one has health insurance" just because it's not provided by the state is absurd. If you're accepted then, in most cases, that Medicaid plan will pay the entire hospital bill for you so you don't have to pay anything. But of course if you're denied you can either fight the decision sending further info into them or you can pay the bill out of pocket and most hospitals here are very good about coming up with payment arrangements so you don't have to pay it all at once.

However, any hospital that receives any type of federal funding (Medicare or Medicaid) is required BY LAW to treat life threatening emergencies. They may transfer the pt to a county hospital after they are stabilized, but they must treat and stabilize first. Failure to do so may result in loss of federal funds and most hospitals aren't willing to risk that.

It goes both ways. Native Texan, and NOT a Cowboy I have had the great joy to have been to the UK and enjoyed it so much I seriously thought about doing my whole vacation there. Thankfully I didn't and I saw most of Europe, including Germany, Switzerland, and Italy. Most Americans have no idea how many different regions there are in GB or how many different accents they have. I work in a hospital. You can go in the front door and there is a required legal sign there saying that the hospital CANNOT turn you away just because you can't pay. We have so many misconceptions about the different parts of the world, it is a shame there isn't someway people can travel to other places and see for themselves how truely alike we are. Different yes, but the same. I think it should be a requirement for us to exchange from time to time.

Since the 1980s, when Ronald Reagan was president, all hospitals (Emergency Rooms) in the U.S. must treat anyone who comes through the doors regardless of ability to pay. It causes a nightmare situation for those actually needing ER services. Patients are triaged based on severity of injury. I spent six hours waiting to see a doctor after my appendix burst. Anytime I inquired as to how long my wait would be, the receptionist asked, “Are you in any pain?” I was sitting with people who were too poor to pay for an internist to treat their cold or infection. The idea that 330 million people living across a huge country are all the same is ludicrous on its face. One can travel 500 miles and be in a different culture without leaving the country. In some large cities you only have to walk a few blocks.
@johnmarschalk19775 күн бұрын
Knew where Jersey was and always wondered why it wasn't part of France. (Is that a bad take?) On insurance, you will get treated to stabilize you in whatever hospital you're taken to. Then transported to hospital that deals with people with no insurance. Most emergency rooms a crowded with people with no insurance, because they don't have a primary physician. Typical they won't see a bill, unless they're pretty well off and just chose not to have insurance. Most states do have some type of public care/insurance for people that can't afford it
@deezynar3 күн бұрын
No insurance, you get hurt, you go to hospital, you go home, you get a huge bill in the mail. You go to their office and ask them how much money they are willing to take if you write them a check right then. The number they give you at that point is about half the number they had put on the original bill. In the U.S., the law allows people to make payments for medical care they received, and the minimum in those payments is ridiculously low. Hospitals assume that you won't pay them the full amount in one go, so they give you a hugely inflated bill so they have a chance of getting enough out of you to get back what they spent on your care.
@DashRiprock51310 күн бұрын
I have workec the emergency room... We are legally and morally bound to take care of everyone that comes in. For people that cannot afford insurance they have Medicare and Medicaid. Some people that came in that didn't have insurance so we would get it for them.... The hospital can send a bill to someone but that's no guarantee they're ever gonna see a cent... so they prefer to get you covered... In the rare cases where someone has no insurance and gets a bill, they are charged according to their means.... The bill is based on a percentage of their income... If someone is a victim of a crime and has no income... The crime victims fund pays for it.

Cowboys are generally associated with the west, not the south. Alabama, Georgia, Mississippi, and the Carolinas do not have cowboys, which are a western thing.

Actually, there _are_ cowboys in my state, Alabama. 🙂 There used to be a TV show that featured them. I have no idea how many are here, but they exist.
@themourningstar3389 күн бұрын
There are cowboys all over N. America and parts of S. America. But yeah, most of the cowboy history and culture is located in the western half of the U.S., west Canada, and originating from the vaqueros of north Mexico (which is also located on the western side of the continent). Hence the names of things like The Wild West, Western movie/literature/art genres, western clothing etc., all of which are clues Europeans tend to ignore LOL. The south definitely does have a few cowboys, but they have much more of a redneck culture than the west does. And while there definitely are rednecks to be found in the west, the western states (including west Texas, and The Great Plains states) have much more of a pioneer/cowboy culture than the south. Not talking smack on rednecks either. It's just that southern and redneck cultures are not the same thing as western and pioneer/cowboy cultures. The south and the west are made up of very different geographic and cultural regions, and have very different histories. But they end up getting incorrectly lumped together sometimes, probably because of Texas lol 😅Texas just be doing their own thing and are a mish-mosh of all of the above.

Here's a clue. Southern people, don't really consider Texas 'the south'. When Americans say 'the south', they really mean the South East. We consider Texas South West. 2:39 me and an online friend from Texas once played an online video game with some british guys. We got in the chat and the UK guys tried to tell us something but they were talking too fast for us to understand😂. My Texan buddy was like I don't think they speak english💀💀💀💀 (imagine a southerner accusing them of not speaking their own language😂). One of the UK guys said, seriously? I then came into the convo with my thick Latino south side Chicago voice, and told him we are Americans so he has to speak slower for us to understand him in his accent. The UK chap was like "you said you are both Americans?" I asked him if he was wondering why our accents sound so radically different. He said yeah, and I explained to him how I grew up on the south side of Chicago and northerners speak very different than people down south. He was mildly surprised to find out that we don't all have that southern drawl he hears in the movies, or that generic accent you hear on the news. I felt like a newly discovered species💀🇺🇲❤️🇬🇧

They cannot refuse you at an emergency center. Many Americans receive health insurance from their employer. There are insurance companies which allow a monthly payment to cover your health issues for those who do not receive health insurance from their employer and are not at least 65 years of age. They only have to treat if it is an actual emergency or life saving. If you show up with an aching back the doctor may give you a few Tylenol and then send you on your way. Also even if it is an emergency you are still going to get a bill for it whether you have insurance or not. If you don't pay it could ruin your credit.

Legally every hospital has to treat you, but if you have no insurance, they will stabilize you and then send you to a county hospital. As a traveler, the insurance you need to have is expatriation - coverage to cover the cost of getting you back to your country using medical transportation, if needed. Our hospital had to arrange medical transportation from Tucson to Mumbai after an Indian gentleman fell in his shower and became a quadriplegic. That cost was over $150,000 in addition to his hospital stay of 4 weeks…. 2 in the ICU. He had no travel insurance and his health insurance did not cover medical transportation. The hospital finally decided to pay the transport, otherwise we’d have him permanently. His insurance did not cover long term care and he hit the limit on the hospital pay out, so my hospital ate that part too. His family also was very low on funds. Always be aware of what your insurance will cover while traveling, especially out of country and have coverage for the worst case scenario.

You are spot on with this list of 5 . Many " Cow Boys" are really just wannabe Cow Boys. They don't own a horse and never roped a cow. My Father-in-Law was a real Cow Boy and refers to them as "Dime Store Cow Boys." Suffice it to say they are "Western" fans. In America there are literally thousands of variations of the Hamburger. Most towns and cities have a neighborhood, or neighborhoods that the wealthy will have their mansions, and yes, even our "middle class" tends to have larger homes than the world standard. There are also many neighborhoods with typically older smaller homes across the country. Like any people from anywhere, some are interested in geography and some more than others. Born and raised in Alaska, geography is BIG here. In my 63 years I have 6 or 7 States yet to visit. I've been to Mexico a few times, Canada 6 or 7 times, and Belize once. Im a huge geography guy and my Wife is a Flight Attendant. We'd love to see all of Great Britain including Jersey and the Hebrides. You will likely go home with a lifetime of debt, and may go home with a lifetime of debt even if you DO have insurance. Of course I am not talking about a sprain or simple bone break, but major trauma, heart attack, anything big, watch out. An ER is only required to stabilize you so that the immediate threat of death or dismemberment is past. Starting the next day, whether treatment will be ongoing or not is subject to discussion. BTW- my cancer bill has been $700,000. of which I have had to pay $132,000. out of pocket.
