I believe the Ultimation sander is in a class by itself, especially when using soft woods like Basswood or Balsa. I like that it seems to have a delicate touch and great for working late at night while everyone sleeps. Of course there is a need for a small powered disk sander but the Ultimation seems excellent for small delicate work. Thank you for sharing.

Olha, thanks for the comparative video. As I see it, there is really no advantage to the hand operated sander outside of the low dust factor. The $225 (direct from the manufacturer) variable speed Proxxon will do many more tasks then the $290 hand operated Ultimation (price with repeater accessory). Yes, you might need to do a couple mods to the Proxxon to repeat a fit up and yes the table could be closer but again, you showed a low/no dollar fix. Then, how well can you coordinate turning the no inertial flywheel sanding disc rotation along with trying to accurately feed in delicate stock.
@OlhaBatchvarov2 жыл бұрын
Just the opposite! I have practically stopped using Proxxon. I do all the more delicate work on a manual disc sander - because the proxxon would just destroy it, because of the high speed... I would happily buy a thickness planer instead of electrick disc sander...

@@OlhaBatchvarov Nice sales pitch Olga (and Dramatic effects !), BUT you are WRONG. Personally the hand crank is not worth it. I need to use BOTH hands when i am working on my models. I think a low speed gear driven motor would be better. Also the price you are asking is very high for what you are getting. $290 is an insanely high price when you can get the Byrnes Sander for $35 more. I personally recommend the Byrnes Sander. The Byrnes is the gold standard in construction and precision and at $325 worth every penny.

Just to re-ignite the fire in a friendly way. You are wrong Nick. I have both the Proxxon and the Ultimation. If I had to choose one it would be the Ultimation. If we were discussing lumber for carpentry then the Proxxon would be the choice but for the tiny pieces used in scale modelling any powered sander is far too aggressive in my opinion even on its slowest speed setting. I hear what you are saying about having two hands on the piece and I had the same fear until I actually used the Ultimation. Provided that you have it secured firmly to a tabletop you really do not need a second hand on the workpiece because you are using such a slower disc speed. Remember that this is designed for precision not speed. You can also easily work with plastic parts without the worry of melting them. I was so impressed when I first used my friend’s, I sacrificed a huge amount of suitcase space going on a work trip to the states to bring one back. Try one and you won’t look back!

Disc sanders are great if you only ever want to sand the outside of curves... what about the inside?? This is why I prefer an oscillating belt sander.
@OlhaBatchvarov Жыл бұрын
Radiuses are very small in shipmodeling! That's why I prefer a rotary tool. With 7mm diameter drums, you can make the smallest knees for the ship, which is absolutely not possible with oscillating belt sander. The maximum you can do with it is to sand the frames with big curves (which can also be done with a rotary tool), so in my opinion it's a waste of money, and it takes up a lot of space! P.S. Watch the Rotary Tools video #1 of the "Necessary Tools" playlist. You will find some useful features...

The proxxon tools are nothing special. Made in China, sold by Germans, for German price (over priced). The quality doesn't go beyond the green paint.

These are the best tools out of everything I've tried before. You just take them out of the box and you can work with them immediately! Because even if you buy something cheaper - you still need to spend the same amount of money as their cost to improve the tools before you can use them for modeling...
