I remember those days...decent guitars were super pricy!
@m1nnefr3d3 жыл бұрын
Yup, I agree. Guitars on a ridiculously low budget are all around. My recently bought Harley Benton TE-20 MN no exception. But not everything is now more affordable: Got me a brand new Squier Strat which was made in Mexico (!) back in the late eighties for just below 400 Deutsche Mark. Fender is now asking € 649 for an entry-level MiM Stratocaster over here (with a usable floating 2-point trem and state-of-the-art branding, I admit), the equivalent of 1,270 DM. Nice presentation, Jason 👍🤘💪 Great music store, too. With the downside of being way out of reach 😉

It’s pretty amazing what’s available now at a very affordable price. Some my disagree, but Jackson makes some fantastic guitars that won’t break the bank (JS series) and still gives you all the bells and whistles of the pricier models. A buddy of mine swapped out the pickups for some Seymour Duncans on the same model and it sounds incredible. Total cost for the guitar and pickup swap was actually under $500 🤘. Thanks for doing these videos! These are really informative.

The Ibanez Gio series always was a great recommendation for low budget guitars. Nowadays there are certainly more options. The time where you cut your hands on the frets of cheap guitars are over. As a leftie I appreciate that Ibanez offers left handed guitars in that price range. Mine got new pickups (Seymour Duncan JB and Jazz) and I did block the floating tremolo with a piece of wood - gives more contact to body and therefore more sustain. It makes it hold its tuning much better - particularly when quickly tuning to drop-D and back to E standard. Tuning stability is one point where cheaper models differ from higher priced ones.

That's definitely a valid point! I just played a thing I came up with called Birds. My goal is to play differently than everyone else I played 7 minutes and 24 seconds with out picking one single note. I played Birds with only my fingers using both hands. It was thousands of notes and I missed several sometimes one note cancels out another when your hitting them that fast. Lots of bends without picking a single note. Someone may get Shreduritis if they see this and I did not PICK. You look like YOUR HAVING FUN and so am I roaring. My biggest set back to guitar is not playing what I want to but I have a LTD ESP FM 300 and there is NO ONE IN MY AREA THAT DOES SET UPS and It has a Floyd rose and I need lots done to it. Not being able to get a professional guitar set up is my biggest hinderance to playing. Usually it’s trying to play the thing for most but for me it’s not being able to get a set up for 2 years it’s needed it. I don’t know what to do.

Yeah finding someone who’s great at setups can be a challenge. My area is fortunate (Replay Guitar Exchange, the shop I’m at in this video, does a phenomenal job!). There’s probably someone in your area though, like an individual so keep searching!! OR even better...you could learn how to master that skill and YOU could be the one everyone is paying to setup their guitar!

Jason Stallworth cheap 50 dollar guitars have played well for me and if they were expensive I had bad luck 2 50 dollars guitars with passive pickups raddled windows when the FM 300 will not ring my ears.

I'm so glad you started with the Ibanez Gio and then the Schecter diamond series guitars. They're pretty good options right out of the box! For anyone looking into a more entry-level instrument which can maybe stand the test of time, consider this: Both are platforms which people will get with the intention to keep, and to upgrade over time. Similar can be said for the basic Ibanez RG series (RG7421, RG421, RG8, etc.). The real difference between these and the much more expensive ones with still a bolt-on neck is the hardware (a little) but more importantly the pickups, which people want to upgrade any way. I know a professional metal musician who plays a 7-string Gio with after market pickups (which still costs less over-all than a "players series" Ibanez) on stage and in recordings, because they're just that good for the price.
@jasonstallworth2 жыл бұрын
Yeah, those are both great guitars to start with and are quality for the price! And great advice here…thank you!

@@jasonstallworth I had no comment about the Jackson (though I do want to add a pointy guitar or two to the collection eventually lol) because I've never played one. But I have heard so much similar about their budget lines as well.

I just got an Omen Elite-6 new for $500 as my first electric. Has some upgraded pickups and nut compared to the normal Omen-6 and also a 5-way switch. I have to say part of the reason was the look, though. I got the blue one which looks really cool, IMO. There's also a slightly different model in matte black one with bat inlays that I was tempted by.

By comparison, I snagged a used 2004 Jackson DKMG (MiJ) with a back-bowed neck for under $400. Found a Dinky FF reverse-headstock 24-fret neck and swapped my piranha neck and the EMG-HZ set straight up. Opened up the bolt holes in the body and installed neck with counter sunk steel inserts and brass bolts, file 13'd the LP bridge and put on an OFR including the posts and locking nut, added heavy black Grover tuners, and wired in the EMG 81/85 HB set with the original Turbo Boost. All told, I added $400 worth of harware. With a touch of neck relief, and .75 shims, the action is ALMOST as low as my neck-thru Charvel and SL3, and the sustain is well within ballpark of them also.
