/ loisdavidsonart Thanks so much to everyone who has subscribed, as we now have over 1,000 subscribers which is amazing!!!
To celebrate, I'm painting a quick stormy sky over the South Downs, a fast and loose impressionistic painting demonstration that I hope captures the drama of an approaching storm.
As always, please feel free to paint along, and ask any questions in the comments below.
Materials:
Saunders Waterford 90lb cold pressed paper 15" x 11"/38cm x 28cm
Large and medium hake brushes
Rigger and card for scraping
Cotman tube watercolours: raw sienna, indigo, sepia, paynes grey

Hi Lois, Proud to be one of your FIRST thousand! One thing I wanted you to know that gives me great value from your videos is how you paint shapes that contribute to your design, not "things." This demo was an excellent example of how you paint as a desiger to create an emotional impression rather than what I call a "documenter" of things. Of course, there are many, many other reasons to watch your videos. Thank you.

Well done Lois, 1000!! Nice painting, I was reminded of just how much lighter pigment dries. Your 'almost neat' Paynes grey looked alarming but toned down to a perfect stormy sky. That's skillful, and much practice I think.

Thanks Barbara, it always dries a lot lighter, but I wouldn’t have minded it staying a bit darker!

Hi Lois, I like your demonstrations of simple yet effective and atmospheric landscapes. Are you able to video in landscape format rather than in square format? Similar to your opening and final shots? I think it would help the demonstrations enormously.

Thanks John, sadly I only have my phone to film with and a simple tripod so I can only film in square format at the moment, sorry about that, I know it isn't ideal but I'm not in a position to upgrade my equipment at present!

Hi Lois! You captured the storm atmosphere really well! I find your commentary very helpful to follow along with your creative process. Love how you use, what looked to me like a credit card, to make the grass. Nice work! Watched in full, liked (71) and subscribed (1.12k plus 1). Perhaps we can connect. Marcus

Lovely Lois..... One question , when I viewed it and went to full screen, it enlarged but stayed narrow. Is that how it was recorded? Thanks Merv

merv wright yes, sadly, I film with my iPhone and edit in iMovie on my phone and it seems to be the only format I can work out how to use... I’m a technophobe, but at least it works to a degree! 😊☕️☕️

Hello Lois. I have never painted with a hake brush but having watched Ron Ranson videos and your own beautiful work, I am tempted to try. I see I can order RR brushes from Ken Bromley as I live in Oslo. What size (s) would you recommend? Thanks for your advice. I'm getting on a bit so had better hurry!!!

Susan R Greet Danielsen I started with the medium hake, I think it is the most versatile to begin with, I highly recommend the RR brushes from Ken Bromley 😊💕
