When I was a pre-teenager to my mid teenage years I fell in love with guinea pigs. We were visiting relatives one day, and they had a guinea pig. Corky was so smart. She could actually work her way out of her cage easily. My Aunt told me that she quickly learned how to open the entryway to her cage, and was constantly escaping confinement. She was incredibly intelligent. It was the first time that I was not afraid of an animal. I was able to hold and cuddle the guinea pig, and she fell asleep my chest. I was so content, and my Mom was sure to buy me a guinea pig, because she saw how much I loved Corky. Over the years I had at least 15 - 20 guinea pigs. They were all healthy and lived long, happy and healthy lives. This was despite the fact that, back than, they were put in metal "cages". All they got to eat were guinea pig pellets and veggies, and I loved it when they made their special noise when I opened the refrigerator door. I would close the door to the entry room they resided in, and allow them all free access to walk the length and breadth of the entire room. They loved it, and I would lie down on the floor and interact with them. Now, decades later, I have developed a fear of them. Why? I have no idea. I only had one that was a "biter". But, part of the happiest memories of my childhood was having those lovable guinea pigs in my life. They seemed to purr like cats when being petted, were super calm and friendly, and deserved every inch of the love that I gave them.

I’ve had piggies since I was 7 years old (I’m now 55), and I’ve found that as owners we really need to do our own research. A lot of pet store workers don’t have a lot of experience with guinea pigs and their job is to sell products for the most part. I’ve found that the veterinarian and experienced owners are the best teachers when it comes to our beloved piggies ❤️❤️😊😊
@m.b.g.22353 жыл бұрын
Shona, hi I am reading this a year later. My granddaughter got a guinea pig and I can tell she cares very deeply for her. However, I agree with your comment about doing more research. I don't think my daughter really knew all the things a guinea pig needs to have a happy long life. I have to be careful what I say, but I am trying to mention things I have read to make them see that there are several things that should be done.

I truly agree that pet store workers don't have experience. I once bought a few hamsters before buying my guinea pig. They gave my parents a small cage with *5* hamsters inside. i could never imagine how horrible it was for them so I researched and separated them. they passed away months later, due to my father mostly believing the pet shop worker. on top of that, they gave my dad guinea pig pellets instead of hamster food. so i had to give my hamsters guinea pig food for 4 days straight because I didn't have any fruits or vegetables. ------------------------- guinea pig I got my guinea pig after thinking about it for a while. I went to the same pet store, and saw two cute guinea pigs. my dad didn't let me get two because he wanted to see how I would do with one guinea pig, and our condominum has very little space for two guinea pigs. I chose a guinea pig, and they carried the guinea pig by grabbing it on top. i knew it wasn't good because the guinea pig looked like it was really stressed. I researched and found out how to actually carry the guinea pig, because the way they taught me how to do it made the guinea pig move so much- on top of that, they *SUGGESTED* for me to use a hamster cage for my guinea pig. i told my dad that it would never work, because wheels are dangerous for guinea pigs, and there are tunnels that are way too small for it. i'm glad i was able to change my mind and really research on these things, otherwise my guinea pig would be so sad.

Our guinea pigs have a big cage, my mum wasn't allowed to bring 2 home from the rescue without having the right size cage - but it soon got upgraded when the third was introduced. Fortunately she had done lots of research into the right size cages. As a child her guinea pigs were in cages that were too small, back then DIY cages were basically unheard of. She did make a bit of a mistake with the pellets, she wanted to switch them to a different brand of food as the one they were having was alfalfa based but the first one she chose was not very healthy at all, and had nowhere near as much vitamin C in it. It took a few months of mixing different pellets to finally get them on to a good quality pellet food.

Lol... Thankfully I'm not the only person who as a beginner made the mistake (although an awesome mistake) of buying 2 little girls who were 6 weeks old. But little did I know that one of these girls was pregnant and about 5 weeks later she delivered 3 healthy and beautiful baby boys which we kept of course. Now the last remaining boy is 6 1/2 years old!!! He needed a friend so this time I adopted (the smart option) 2 little 1 Yr old girls for him and now he seems so happy and young at heart, it's awesome!!!!

Yeah small cages are definitely a number one mistake for me. As a future veterinarian in the works, I’ve learned a lot abour all different kinds of smaller animals. The cages I have for my piggies currently could be bigger. I have seven piggies and each pair is in a living world cage XL (which is almost the same size as the white cage you had). I really want to move them to a more open CnC cage or at least something as cool as yours. For now they have to put up with the cages they have but they get a lot of floor time (especially with quarantine) so I guess it’s what’s made best of the situation. I would get an open top CnC cage but we have a dog and two cats and my door is broken so they can come in my room

We learn all the time and I've even found that a lot of things on the internet haven't necessarily been the case with my piggies, so theres so much customisation even for each individual piggie!!

My biggest mistakes were tiny cage (it is now appropriately sized), feeding the pet store’s “house blend” of pellets which included so many treats and seeds that it caused a small choking incident that left me giving piggie Heimlich with the vet on the phone. I also only had one guinea pig at first and it took me reading up on depression in guinea pigs to know that they needed somebody else. I got two more so if one passes away, the two still have each other (the choking incident really shook me up).

I let my piggies have about an hour of "free time" or "let's hang out" time in my room. (As a side note, I would place them first on thick paper towels, or a cardboard box they can step into without a top. The tend to like to use the restroom where they first went. So it will prevent messes.) So that's when I give them super treats, like lettuce. It was a very slow process to get them comfortable running around. At first we just stayed in small section of the room. Sometimes they stay under my leg, or one of the little hide areas nearby. But, now that they know the area is safe and have slowly inspected every area they really seem to enjoy it. The female piggy will only either stay in a hide, or play follow the leader with the male piggy. I have a jingle bell ball cat toy I leave out that the male piggy likes. (Only for supervised time because they might try to eat it; like everything else :). But he LOVES to roll the ball around the entire room, pushes it along the wall. So cute. And boy, he is Fast when he wants to be.

Lots of the websites said that the pigs require a certain square footage in space but before I bought one none of the sizes I had seen had specified that it needed to be on one floor. Luckily my boys were only in the hutch we got for about a week and they were still babies. Now they're in a 3x5 c&c cage with a little loft and the 2 of them have lots of room to run and play!

Another mistake I made was also small cages the cage I have right now isn’t big enough but they are still baby’s and is enough room for now however when I get enough money I will build them a big cage.

@Sgsf Y Yes, you should not. In the psyche of the pigs, it would look as if you left them to be vulnerable. They are naturally prey animals (being hunted), thus in open spaces, they would feel very vulnerable. They enjoy cozy cages with defined boundaries and some places for them to hide as it makes them feel safe. It does not mean you cannot hold them (hold them close to your body) to make them feel secure, but it takes time for them to build that trust. Treats do help :)

So, to try and make up for that I just leave the cage door open so she can always be in and out of her cage and hang in my room. and I have some hideys al around my room. I’ve picked all of the wires and anything can can harm her up off the floor, I have a gate in my doorway so she can’t get out of my room. I clean(sweep every week and shampoo a few times a month) my room when needed. So, it might not be the best thing to do..:but it’s all I got. Could I get your opinion on the matter?

Yeah we got one of those store bought cages for our two girls too on an advice from a pet shop employee. To be fair thou he gave us the biggest one they had and it is in their interest to sell what's in the store, we should have been more prepared. They spent the first month with us in that cage until we could get material to build them a bigger enclosure. First day in that bigger cage was like they came more to life, running around and popcorning like crazy :D We are still learning, but I'm glad I have more info about them now, went back to that pet store one day and saw a different employee pushing a hamster cage(one of those with levels, tiny floor space) to a customer looking for a guinea pig one, I stepped in and told them if they really need one now to get the biggest one, but to know they will need to upgrade fast. I wish they would educate pet store employees better.

I can't blame you for not expecting your piggies to get sick like that, I mean everyone's experiences are different, depending on the piggy. Some piggies can go their whole lives without a single health issue, some are super prone to this stuff. I am just lucky enough that my handsome little man is tough and resilient. So far, no matter what, a broken nail, broken tooth, that one time he had a fever, flying on an airplane in a temperature controlled pet specific cargo, because I had to move state....he's just brushed everything off like nothing happened, bouncing and popcorning and giving kisses just the next day! He turned 3 this May 1st, and he is as happy and lively as ever! I did try to get a second guinea pig, but it didn't really work out, and he visited our neighbor's guinea pigs sometimes too, but he was just stressed around all of them, I think this stems from when I first saw him at a pet store (please don't be mad at me for that) and the other male piggies kind of both bullied and ignored him. However, he perks up around people, and strangely, dogs. Of course I never let dogs get too close to him, and I always monitor them closely. He actually comes out of a hidey whenever he sees a dog at all, comes right up to the front of his cage. He is also very well taken care of, to compensate for him being a single piggy, he has 2 mirrors in his large midwest cage, and a guinea pig plush in his bedroom to snuggle with! And he even has shows to watch/listen to, he has his own mini video player with all sorts of shows recorded on it, that he will watch very happily, lol...and of course it is always at a lower volume for his ears. I love him like I would my own child.

I made a couple of the same mistakes you did one is pet store cages. second bought 2 guinea pigs babies 5 weeks old that were pregnant but didn’t even anticipate they could be. When one of them was lumpy on sides I thought for sure bloat. out came the Oval drops medicam and CBD on ears and started massaging the area thinking I was helping her🤦♀️ about a week later out came this adorable piggie we called Mini-Meg sort for nutmeg so cute. Imagine my shock. The second piggy also was pregnant but didn’t really show it much like you I thought she grew fast😜 2 weeks after her sister had her baby out came this beautiful white except for her head (brown) piggy. I admit it was so overwhelming initially and scary that they were pregnant and we didn’t know it! But healthy and as normal as can be happy and active! Amazing how efficient they are at cleaning everything after birth!! So... we ended up with 6 guinea pigs in total in a huge 8 by 4 wooden cage divided in the middle with 1 boar and 2 sows. FYI boars are neutered. I love them and would never have sold or given them away. We adjusted our household to suit everyone and all is happy.

I have one guinea pig. I beg my parents for a second one, but they say no! They say that one guinea pig is already enough, and there is no need for two. I always try to explain to them that Guinean pigs need a partner or a friend but they keep on saying no. Plus my guinea pigs cage is to small! I beg to my parents that my guinea pig NEEDS a bigger one, but my parents always reply with “no it does not” or “it’s going to die soon so no need” but my guinea pig is only 3! Please help me, my guinea pig needs a bigger cage and a friend! Little Adventures what do I do?

I don't think she was being very negative (unless I missed a part where she really tore herself down over a mistake) but rather just admitting that she's made mistakes, owning up to it and being proud of change! it's important to admit to mistakes and know we're not perfect owners so we can keep improving (:

I feel like sometimes pet store workers think that they are a zoologist, no judgement but don't confuse your experience with the amount of reasearch and experience that pet owners have either. I've been talked down to by pet store workers before and they've expressed false narratives to me. I've owned pets all of my life and my mother is a vet tech. I have a hamster and when i got him the workers were looking at everything i was buying and expressing their opinions like guys I'm not stupid. I feel like it's best to rescue animals instead to avoid harsh judgment.

I was not prepared to bring my guinea pigs home and I got a pet store cage and I still have both my guinea pigs Theodore and Rocky in that cage because I don’t have any room in my house for a bigger cage (I’m going to move soon and getting a much bigger cage in my number 1 priority) but I can’t imagine giving my guinea pigs away because I have grown to love them so much but I still give them as much love and veggies as I possibly could. There was so many more problems that I had with my piggies the first few days and almost made use give them away but we found a solution and I’m so excited to see them when they get there brand new big cage.

I did many unspeakable things to my guinea pig that I still blame myself for, I know I was still a kid and I knew nothing about them (and my parents didnt care as always). This is why I'll never have a guinea pig again. R. I. P, I've made your life a miserable hell, I'm sorry.
