I absolutely love this video. My dad joined in the 80’s in the army. I joined in 2000. The night before I shipped out for basic training, the showed me the first half of the movie full metal jacket and said now Kacie, this is the absolute worst that basic could be like, but as long as you do what your told and don’t be tore up, then you should be just fine. I went to basic with a positive attitude, looking for fun and an adventure. While yeah there are times that basic flat out sucked, there are some things if given the chance, I would t mind doing again because they were fun.

I went to USAF basic in 1983. My AFSC was 811x0, Security Specialist. The squadron I was assigned didn't do much to motivate me to make it a career, although I was willing to at first. Maybe it was just that squadron. But, I didn't want to risk PCSing to somewhere else that might be worse. Like he said, don't commit to a 20 year career until you've gotten a good look at the military.

As a barber for 20 years who was both a navy sailor and a merchant seaman for 12 years total I would always tell high school kids who said they wanted to enlist to enlist initially for as few years as possible just in case they end up hating it. I also taught school for 7 years so I know the mental limitations of teenagers. I would also recommend they get an A school guarantee leading to a trades certification which can be used on the outside, because after all, most people do get out. The way most of them screwed up was by enlisting for too many years and not getting an A school guarantee. Enlisting for too long is encouraged by the delusion that navy technical training is a university substitute and therefore it’s okay to enlist for six then immediately extend for two more to get a big reenlistment bonus. This is insanity on a par with taking out enormous student loans to attend college then not even graduating, which is common. And you don’t need to be in a technical rate. Just enlisting for three years active reserves as a cook is just fine, because when you get out you can be either a chief cook in the merchant marine or even attend culinary school to become a chef.
@jadenspires1891

As a junior, thanks for understanding us teens
@marcmeinzer8859
@marcmeinzer8859 Жыл бұрын
@@jadenspires1891 You’re welcome. Never forget that the navy recruiter will insist that you spend the night prior to being sworn in with other recruits in a hotel, ostensibly to keep you out of trouble by for instance getting too loaded with your buddies from home, but more likely to keep you under their influence so you don’t change your mind. Once you got to boot camp you’ll never see your recruiter again in all likelihood which is why you need to resist sales pitches to enlist for too many years. Never forget that even reservists in non-technical rates starting out with three year enlistments can become regular navy simply by reenlisting. Furthermore, even people like cooks and boatswains mates can eventually become warrant officers or even get an appointment to the naval academy or even the merchant marine academy at King’s Point, Long Island. So don’t limit yourself by trying to do everything up front. Also think about possibly going into the SEABEES or the Construction Battalions [combat engineers] for something else. People leaving the SEABEES can make big money in the Operating Engineers union when they get out running earth moving equipment and so forth or even getting a regular construction trade like electrician or plumber or carpenter.

I retired after 20 and for anyone thinking about it, just know that they got rid of the old "20 years 50 percent retirement" and went to a "blended retirement" which you have to invest in. It's not a "bad" plan, but just know that to retire in 20 years you'll have to put in some of your own money starting right from the get go and in most circumstances, the BRC can't be accessed until ages 50 to 60. Definitely do your research on the program prior to re-elisting. Tricare for life and all that is still the same for the most part. It definitely sucks they got rid of the old retirement, it was pretty much the main incentive for retaining senior NCOs and Officers.

Great video I added a few thoughts of my own. When I first moved into the dorm, I was 18 and lived in the sticks, so I had a huge culture shock and I hated everyone around me. If posable go to an ATC base, they are very visible to the powers that be and are kept modern and state of the art. Get on the good side of the first SGT. The first few years you will screw up and appear brain damaged. The first shirt expects this so just don't lie and if they tell you to do it, do it better than what was requested these people are you God They can make you and they can break you. There are many activities you can join like Color Guard, or base sporting teams. I made the base fastpitch team and when there was a tournament, I got TDY pay on top of regular pay. What a wonderful touch, I was paid to play softball, the coolest thing ever.

I've had my mind on air force for the last 3 years but recently I've been second guessing it, my biggest peice of advice even though I'm not in yet is to not settle, of there's something you want to do and the airforce won't provide that then don't settle. Do what you need to do to be as happy as possible. I myself don't want to sit behind a desk which is a lot of airforce jobs, so I'm realizing I need to keep my options open which I recommend you do as well.

All sage advice...especially with DUIs. Here's some good advice: get familiar with the cab companies. They usually run 24/7 because it's a military town. The companies know guys are gonna go out and get drunk so they go out of their way to provide service. That and it's guaranteed money. Better pay the 20$ and be done with it that get jammed up. As for travel, yes, they can dictate travel. This is due to possible deployments, manpower numbers ( military is a numbers game ) whether or not you are standing a RRF/ QRF exercise, ect. Also, depending on liberty, they can dictate how far you can go....if it's just a weekend, you can only go so far. If it's a 96hr ( 4 day liberty) you can go farther. They do this for 2 reasons: first, they don't want you traveling and driving tired ....guys tend to head back at the last possible minute and drive long hours through the night to get back on time. They don't want you speeding either because tickets are a PITA. They don't want guts getting back late for when they need to be back. It's really for your saftey and I've seen guys have issues because they traveled to far.

Great advice. I was in the Army over 35 years ago. I had a two year enlistment, 5 months training in South Carolina a year and half in Italy. I worked in an Army Post Office. I served in an Army Reserve unit in Arizona for 2 years after that. Went to Community College on the G.I. Bill. I will be retireing after 31 years at the post office this year. The Army changed my life for the better, maybe I was very lucky. If I could give young people that want to enlist advice. The military really values education. If you can stay with Mom and Dad for 2 years and go to Community College and then enlist do it. It will open up more options for you both in the military and after. Good luck future Veterans!

@scottreynolds3565
@scottreynolds3565 4 жыл бұрын
@@tommy11sixorozco9 Hey Tommy sounds like a good plan. This gives you more options. If you love the Army you can stay in, having the extra education makes it easier to get promoted to E-5 and above. If you do get your bachelors degree say by the time you are 26, Officer Candidate School is a possibility. If you decide to get out after one enlistment you can always get your bachelors and have the G.I. bill pay for it. You can have the option of joining the reserves or national guard if you dont retire from active duty and eventually get a retirement. Also if you get out without retireing and get a civilian job with the federal government you can have your years in the military added to your time at your civilian federal job to get a bigger pension. That's what I did the added my Army time to the years I've spent at the Post Office. I wish you best in your future and thank you in advance for wanting to serve our country.

If you have a home of record in a state that has state income tax , that will be taken out of your check even if you have not lived in that state for decades . But, if your from a state with no state income tax you get to keep that money and over a ten or twenty year period that would be a lot of money. If you can establish residency in a no state income tax state you will get to keep that money .

Aye man, long story short youll be a briefer/intelligence expert. 1N0 is basically the jack of all trades intel. typical days revolve around doing research on a bunch of stuff then briefing it to your leadership so they can make proper intelligent decisions. It can be a very rewarding or very boring job but it's all about how much you put into it. (There isnt a lot of information on it anywhere because a lot of the stuff we do it classified, but you'll pick it up really quick in training) Oh and also they call us powerpoint warriors for a reason so hope you like giving presentations! Good Luck!

It’s harder for people to do it long term in the Navy. They get put off because of how tight living conditions can be when you’re out at sea. You get your rack in a 60-80 person berthing area. In the Air Force everyone gets their own 3 bedroom house.

💰 The last part was the most important part imo, I've always followed the rules, have several backup plans if I don't like the air force, and don't drink so the last part made the whole video for me. I've always been thrifty and am good at saving and having patience for future benefits like this. Do you think the air force would match my TSP input if the amount taken out of my pacheck was 30% or more? I'm not going to have kids so I don't need that much money when I'm young and able to work.
@AirmanVision
@AirmanVision 2 жыл бұрын
They only will match up to 5% but you can put in more if you want. I would recommend doing no more than 10% though. Invest the rest into other assets that are more liquid and accessible so you can use that to buy a house or other large purchase. You can’t use money you put into a retirement fund to buy a home or other large asset.

I enlisted in the USMC in 1996. I stayed for that 4 year enlistment and got out for a number of reasons. I’m not trying to scare anyone away from the military here. I wouldn’t change my decision to join for anything. In fact, honestly, I wish that I would’ve stuck it out for the full 20 years if possible. There are pros and cons but overall the pros outweighed the cons for me. When I was 18-21 years old the military felt like a prison. When you sign the dotted line on your enlistment papers you become government property. Just as he said, they own you. You are expected per the Uniform Code of Military Justice (UCMJ) to be behave and treat yourself (not destroying government property) as government property and as a representative of the US Military and Government. You sign away all of your Constitutional Rights (you are now government property). You are afforded privileges (wearing civilian clothing and leaving base even) that are able to be withdrawn at any time. Those are a couple of drawbacks. For the pros, you are (or while I was in anyway) now able to utilize free healthcare for you and your dependents. You are provided food, clothing and dwelling accommodations and tax free purchases in on base exchanges (stores) during time on active duty to name a few. This is a GREAT DEAL! After your time is complete and you and you return to the Civilian World you are now able to utilize healthcare in VA Medical Facilities, disability ratings from injuries received in the military for life(monthly payments and free medical treatment for said conditions) for life, free college via the GI Bill, aid for mental distress that occurred during your time in the military and a myriad of other benefits relating to virtually anything taking place in your life, many are there that aren’t apparent unless you look for them will benefit you and your family for life. Overall, I would call it a definite plus joining the military, especially now 24 years after the end of my enlistment. I would’ve re-enlisted after 9/11 if not for a traumatic brain injury that resulted in seizures shortly after returning home. Because of the training I received in my unit, I believe that I would receive the chance to be assigned to that unit again. I’ve become brothers with all of the people that I served with that are in many ways closer than family to this day. Everyone isn’t the same and you need to use your own judgment on whether to enlist or not but hopefully this gives you an indication of what to expect.

Or possibly the airforce with so much more potential after you've done your time in the military? Younger people like to rush into everything blindfolded, just take a second and do some soul searching cause if you're not 100 percent certain in your choice you might regret it later

The military is all about mindset, a lot of people join knowing of the commitment but then once they’re in they feel trapped. Your not trapped, you decided this because you believed in it. Don’t stop believing just because it’s harder than you realized

@@ChrisTopherBunnellI’m not sure what this has to do with my old comment but let me elaborate. I’m saying that it’s easy to forget what your fighting for whether you think you serving to protect your love ones or for a consistent pay check or even for work experience. When times get hard and you lose faith I’m saying to remember why you joined and keep that in your heart while you serve. Many people have horror stories from the military including me (ex navy) but for the majority it’s just long days and hard work. If you keep your mind right your service with fly. That’s what I mean when I said your not trapped you just feel trapped is because when you’ve been suffering time slows and you don’t realize how soon you’ll be out. I’m not saying people haven’t been assaulted or that if your depressed (or anything else wrong) that you shouldn’t seek help just that most should keep fighting.

@ArtyAnt amen it's a commitment you're da@# right, you signed the contract and took the oath NOW LIVE WITH IT, BE PROUD AND ACCEPT IT. It's an honor to be a veteran. I'm da@# proud of the 15 years I served (4 years Marine Corps and 11 years Army National Guard where I got shot at). I'm also grateful to God for the excellent, permanent compensation check I get from the VA. The losers that start whining or regretting that they joined once their in, get me sick to my stomach. Once again, it's a commitment and you should be proud of it.

REview: 1-Go in with an open mind. You may serve longer than one term, or may just serve one. 2-Your job is not what you may think it is. Find someone who was in the job to talk to. Do not trust the commercials. 3-Follow the protocols. If its repairs, you are liable for someone's life if they loose it as a result of your lack of discipline in your job. 4-When you sign, the military owns you. You give up many rights and privileges. Where you travel, going on vacation etc. The 5th amendment doesn't apply as much. Double Jeopardy: If you get a ticket or get in trouble outside of the military, the military will double down on your punishment. You are representing the service as such, behave.

I've been retired now for 8 years after serving 24 yrs in the AF. This by far is one of the best, well spoken videos I have seen regarding the choices people make and the expectations they have when they join. I had spent many countless hours counseling young airmen on these exact issues he spoke of. One thing I always told my airmen was "you are an airman 24/7. unless you get out before retirement, you are always an airman, and always on duty." I'm very glad we have someone like Airman Vision to educate any future airmen/soldiers/sailors/marines. Thank you for your video and for your service!
