Great video. A few takeaways. 1. Yes some recruiters may be aggressive. If you are interacting with an aggressive recruiter find another one. He’s completely right. 2. Correct. Don’t sign anything unless everything your recruiter promised you is on paper. You won’t need to sign a contract until you pass all enlistment requirements. ASVAB + MEPS 3. Also correct you can’t quit lol. Once you leave that’s it. But as far as duty station there are now options for specific MOS’s where you can pick your first duty station. Again make sure that it is in the contract. Option 19 + Option 20 is what you should be looking for. 4. Remember this is the Army / Military at the end of the day you’re a soldier. Doesn’t mean that you’re going to be living the life of an Infantryman, but there will be rough times. 5. Reclassing is as difficult as he says but it’s not impossible. Ive held 2 MOS’s in the Army and I’m about to start my 3rd at the end of the year. 6. If the job you want isn’t available you more than likely didn’t qualify for it based off your ASVAB score. There are other reasons but that’s the main one. 7. If you want more info or are looking for a recruiter. Hit me up I got you.

Thank you this was very informative as my husband as just began the process of enlisting the biggest thing we’re confused on is the transition into the army with a wife and kids. What if his first duty station doesn’t have housing available at the time he’s set to start?

I didn’t join the Army because the Recruiter lied and told me I could switch my MOS at any time in Basic. When I talked to the Marine Recruiter, he didn’t lie. He said it was gonna be complete trash being in the Marines, but you’ll meet life long friends. Then he told me Boot Camp won’t be the hardest part of the Marines. That got my interest, so I asked me older brother to validate if he lied. Nope, 3 years later into my contract. I do for sure hate it just like I was told. I don’t regret it one bit. 😃

One thing many people don't understand and the only reason I did is I had former recruiters in my family (dad was a Marine recruiter in '76, brother-in-law was a recruiter in the late '90s), is that recruiters do NOT write up contracts. When the video author says get stuff in writing, be careful with that because if its the recruiters doing it, it means jack squat. When veterans say to get stuff in writing, this is at MEPS when you have gotten your physical, taken the ASVAB, and now sitting with a civilian at a desk and going over how long you wish to enlist for, which branch, and all that. This is where you want EVERYTHING in writing before you sign anything and BEFORE you raise your hand for the Oath of Enlistment. When we say everything we mean EVERYTHING. Get that bonus locked in, starting rank, MOS, and even duty station if available. This is where it gets scary because as a young guy or girl you have to haggle.. probably for the first time in your life. That counselor is trying to fill in the most needed jobs for the branch they work for. Your desires, your wants, your needs are not on his radar. His first priority is to get you to sign a piece of paper and also to sign up to fill in the most needed jobs and places. The jobs no one wants are the jobs he needs to fill, keep that in mind. This guy will lie and scheme as well. He will tell you what you want to hear. He will try to get you to sign that paper and sign your life away. But you have the power. At the end of the day, if you walk. He's in trouble. Your recruiter will be down his ass if you decide to walk away (since the recruiter loses credit). If you're hardballing, your recruiter will actually become one of your best allies. Let me explain how my situation went in 2006. Before I even walked into my recruiters office, I knew what MOS I wanted. For me that was 25S, Satellite Communications. The MOS with the longest and most advanced school in the Army Signal Corps. Before then I had looked over several MOS's. 25B, 25N, 25P, and 25S. I didn't really have any idea what more to do there so I spoke with my sister who had joined in '89 (she's a tad older). She had experience as a 31U as her first MOS which is now 25U. She didn't know which one was satcom off the top of her head but she knew it had the longest school, so she told me to pick the one with the longest school. It also had the most requirements on ASVAB and at the time civilian education. My Dad told me to make sure to work out getting the bonus and rank with my recruiter. So I went into my recruiter's office and told him, I want 25S, I want a sign on bonus, and I want two promotions (start off as an E3 instead of E1). So my recruiter put my packet together, did the background checks, got my college transcript (I had half of a 2 year degree by that point), and started scheduling me for the MEPS part (ASVAB and Physical). He warned me that it was going to be tough getting my MOS because of the requirements. He did a pretest for the ASVAB and I scored a 87 there. Which he said I would likely do better on the real one. I did, got a 96 ASVAB score, but more importantly I got a 130 GT and a 147 EL score (25S required a 120 EL, or electronics). Then when it came to speaking to the counselor, things started hitting the fan. While 25S was a needed MOS, there was a few other signal MOSes that needed more and so he tried to sabotage my packet (remember what I said about scheming). He said that I didn't have the civilian education requirement, at the time it was an Algebra course. Well I was in college and had gotten maximum marks in my math courses and placement, so I didn't need algebra which is why it wasn't on the transcript. I tried to explain that the math courses I took had maths as prerequisites higher than algebra, but he wasn't hearing it. So I called my recruiter, right there and told him I need my HS transcript. Understand this was 8pm at night. The HS I went to was in a different county, and I was 200 miles away in the state capital. Somehow.. someway, my recruiter pulled through and got the transcript faxed to the MEPS office. So I got my rank signed in, got my bonus I wanted, got the job I wanted.. but now the counselor wanted to ship me off in a few days. I pulled a fast one and told him I wanted Delayed Entry. Mainly because my parents had a vacation trip planned and I wanted my graduation date to be after they got back from that. He was PISSED. But I had him by the balls. He had done all that work already and didn't want me to walk after all that. So that day I was entered into the IRR as a delayed entrant at the rank of Private E2, and two months later when I took the Oath of Enlistment, I was promoted to PFC E3 and went to basic training. It sounds mean to do, and I agree. But remember, this is your life. Take it seriously. Its yours, and no one else's. If a counselor doesn't fill a needed MOS, he may get an ass chewing. Don't worry about them. Don't let them intimidate you. Worry about you and you alone in this process, this is your life. Do your research and take your time. Ask questions. It also seems in my story that my recruiter was with me 100% This is kinda true. My recruiter was a former Marine Infantryman. He was a civilian recruiter during the mass recruit surge in 2006. He wasn't like most active duty recruiters. He point blank told me he had no idea what my MOS was. Not all recruiters will be like that. And he was only backing me because I made it very clear at the get go what I wanted and that I wasn't someone to be sweet talked. He was there to do my paperwork, and that is it. I made sure he knew that (in a polite and matter of fact way of course). All he had to do was get my packet in order, so his job was easy.

I was a recruiter for the National guard in Texas, yes my job was to recruit but I always looked for the best option for my recruit, depending on what their needs were at the moment in near future. Is always good to ask a relative who has militar experience. I changed my MOS 4 times, 19K, 11B, 19D and 88M. You need a GT score of at least 100 or 110. Some MOSs require higher GT score. Enlisting in the US Army was the best decision of my life. If I go back in time I will do it again. If you don’t wanna be deployed then should stay a civilian. The military is to deploy at any ANY time. Is an experience only a few have the courage to do. All others decide to stay in the civilian world.

In the Marine Corps for MOS changes, it basically works like this. It’s called a Lateral Move, this is because you can’t just change into any MOS. For Active contracts you must wait until it’s time to re-enlist, however for Reserve contracts you can activate for a AR contract after finishing MOS school and being assigned your primary station (but it’s basically like signing a re-enlistment contract).

Joining the Marine Corps was possibly the biggest mistake of my life. I went in half cocked in hopes of becoming a better version of me. I trusted my recruiter to the end. Halfway through training, I suffered a life threatening incident. I was dropped from my company. A month later, I called my recruiter and told him exactly what happened. What he said was generic and not helpful in the slightest. *RED FLAG.* I haven’t heard from him since. It took months to finally get separated from the military, and all that time I was treated like a recruit, even though I couldn’t go back to training. My word of advice? There’s NOTHING in that depot worth dying for. Stop = think. Side note: Conversely, had I joined any of the other branches, I would’ve never reached the same sense of accomplishment and satisfaction as the Marines.

There's a ton of stuff that you can do with the Army. However, like this guy said in the video. Make sure to read your enlistment contract before signing. If you were promised a bonus, job, duty location, or school. It will be in that contract. If it is not in the contract, then you aren't getting it. I'm almost done with recruiting and get HRAPs thanking us all the time. They share horror stories of how other recruits were lied into a job or the Army in general. Also if your ASVAB score is garbage. Your options will be extremely limited. So don't score a 35 and think you're gonna be a cyber operations specialist.

First time see my recruiter they tried to hide the fact that I can go to college for ROTC or even 4 years OTC for it, especially I got real high GPA, SAT, ACT enough to qualify for commission school scholarship. Made it to 6-5 in NAVY bootcamp and I called home, my grandfather told me that I can actually get out (4:24) and he'll help me do the ROTC thingy, what he didn't expect is that after I got out they gave me an RE-4...which I can't join military again forever -_-

With "being able to quit during basic/ ait" is pretty much impossible unless you lied about whatever when getting through MEPS. Was week 14/22 of Fort Benning 19D and was chaptered out after family submitted info that I had ADHD Meds when I was 10 :), there's always a way out if you don't want to be their but remember its faster to get out by finishing your basic + ait then to quit

That "finishing basic and ait is faster than quitting" is a lie I went fucked my leg up was gonna be sent to a rehab but I refused and was sent back to my company and had a long talk and I was out in 3 weeks on a general discharge. There's alot more to why I did it but yea no it's not faster to finish

@@deleted8978 depends, idk when you went in but now they changed regulation and won’t allow anyone to be discharged medically until you’re “fully fixed” by the army (legal purposes) and then after you heal they generally force you to keep training. Battle buddy was in a previous company and fell off confidence tower shattering his back and had 7 months of rehab (begged and cried to go home but they refused), once healed he was put with us in echo and had to redo ALL of basic but couldn’t finish the ruck since it was destroying his back and after his family started legal case against the army they discharged him (this was as soon as I was about to be separated), long story they’re forced to fully heal you if you get “injured” and won’t let you discharge if you didn’t lie about anything in osut at least

I scored a high ASVAB and I received notice from the Navy recruiter about the Navy Nuclear Program. After two of three conversations and keeping my distance for about a year, I finally went to have a conversation about it. He started honing in on my concerns about going the college route (due to money) and (later when I backed) when I brought up ROTC, he tried to scare me into thinking I wouldn't get in: complete bs. But anyway, he started to talk me into immediately going along with the process of registration and MEPS. He started talking about me going to MEPS two weeks later, which threw me off. Overall, seemed like a recruiter that could get me where I wanted to go, but was still a slimeball that tried to get me in before I could seemingly say no.
