I HAD TO LAUGH! I spent 5 years on Recruiting Duty, and even jumped over to the dark side and became an 8412 Career Recruiter. Everything you mentioned was spot on. My recruiters and I never sold a job, we sold the Marine Corps. I made sure my recruiters never talked about the other branches, why?, because we didn't know anything about that life. Stressful, and we walked that very fine grey line. My office was very successful because we told the truth about the Corps. Those recruiters that came out to recruiting duty looking for the promotion always struggled. I used to say tell these kids the truth and they will respect you for it. Had some great times on recruiting duty. I didn't finish my time as an 8412, it just wasn't fulfilling enough. I did an additional 4 combat tours after I left recruiting and I never looked back. Retired as a SgtMaj out of the Reserves. I trained and served with some damn fine Marines. I like hearing the stories, keep them coming. S/f!
@JamesonsTravels4 жыл бұрын
SgtMaj, Outstanding stuff. It's a grey line in most of the military if you are doing it right. The young recruits need the right coaching and to understand why the question is being asked. Think about their answer before opening the hole in their face. If they are going to lie to the recruiter stick with the lie. Lol. Recruiting is one of the tougher jobs in the Corps. 24/7 and results matter. Share the channel with some other good ole Jarheads. Semper Fi.

Hey I have a question being a former recruiter and all ok I talked to my army recruiter set a meps date and on the way he asked me if I had any scars I told him yes showed him and he literally stopped the car turned around and said you'll definitely need a waiver for that so I didnt get to go it was on my chest from when I was a baby i couldn't breath so they put a tube in my chest for a couple days to help me then they took it out (haven't had any other medical issues since) and this was 18 years ago I'm currently 19 my question is though having that documented b4 I go to meps do u think they will still accept me bc I really want to join but if I cant instead of waiting for meps to respond however long that will take I might as well start looking at colleges or something ohhhhhhh and mr james love your videos keep em coming u dont sugar coat a thing and I respect that

On Point 1: I had a hernia before my recruiter signed me up for the Marine Corps, and I knew I had a hernia. It never showed up on any medical exams until boot camp, though, when the rigors of recruit training made it more pronounced. Because it first appeared officially during boot camp, the Navy fixed my hernia for me as if it was a boot camp injury. I didn't have to pay any bill but the $4 for the overnight stay in the hospital. I went on to serve an 8-year career in the USMC Reserve.

Went through medical side of meps here in Idaho about 3 weeks ago. Question 1 " When was the last time you went to the hospital" The goal with this question is to catch you either in a lie, or admit you've been in the hospital. Notice how an easier question would be "Have you ever been to the hospital?" So by them asking a very baited question, you can find yourself back stepping. My answer "Never went for an injury, but last time was when my daughter was born." Question 2 " What sports did you play in high school" Again, the goal with this question is to list any and all sports you may have played. If you played football, they may start asking questions about head injuries or any type of injuries that you may not have listed with your recruiter. My answer: " Varsity Tennis" Question 3 " How often did you smoke pot in High School vs in your twenties?" Again, either way you answer that you are admitting to smoking pot, which is NOT a immediate denial of service but can lead to more in depth questions. I cannot recall all 10 questions but they were very very bait style questions.

Then the military needs to change their standards. Mild asthma is common in childhood, but sometimes people outrgrow it or their health status changes.
@paulsmith56112 жыл бұрын
True, usually. I have the same story. I can run far beyond what basic requires and knew that I would have no problems in basic or general PT during service. But I still sometimes wheeze in the morning or when I run. I told the guy I had asthma as a child and, unlike what most here are staying, he wouldn't let me lie or tell me to lie to get me in. His exact words, which I still remember 20+ years later was, "asthma will show up in bootcamp". He tried to get me a waiver but failed and I never went in. My guess now is what he meant is young guys who want to quit basic after a few weeks will use the asthma that they lied about as a health excuse to quit basic and get out. At the time I never understood what he meant about it "shows up in basic". Asthma doesn't, unless the recruit is looking for a way to quit. I would not have been that guy, but oh well, at the time we weren't at war and I don't think they were as desperate for recruits as they are now. And of course this was before the internet so I didn't know everything I know now.

In my experience in the Army, they want the following attributes. So say: 1. I will obey orders. 2. I will like and smile at the person giving the orders. 3. I love cleaning things, especially my rifle. 4. Ask the recruiter is he is coping with his day. 5. Say that you would like any job in the Army, especially Infantry (most recruiters are infantry). What you really want, but will never disclose: 1. Money, and the more the better. 2. Be driven round in a Rolls Royce, as a commanding general. 3. Be a babe magnet, glistening with medals. 4. Give the orders, which must be obeyed (like a pumped up Napoleon). 5. Do whatever I like.

Just remember, "Don't ask don't tell". If they don't ask about something specific, don't volunteer any information. For example, I have ADHD. The recruiter never asked if I had anything like that, so, I didn't mention it. It's irrelevant and not the recruiter's business. I know a lot of people who were in the Army. They helped me out. When I was in I met a lot of people who had ADHD, Asperger's, Asthma, allergies to milk and other foods. Did any of those things affect the person's performance in the Army? Not significantly! People never told me you can't join the Army if you have ADHD. I heard that from a few people when I got out of the Army. Some people had very obvious signs of ADHD, Asperger's, Autism or other medical conditions. But, they were almost all good soldiers.

@davidarndt46993 жыл бұрын
@@kw4841 Don't flat out mention it to them. There's a 50/50 chance that they will notice it. For example: I have flat feet. They looked at my feet and said, "Flat feet. Do you have any problems running?" I said, "No." They just moved on and didn't worry about it. If you flat out tell them about your condition, there's a 100% chance they'll notice it. Then they will ask questions about it. Don't volunteer any information to them. If they don't ask, don't tell. I am also allergic to Milk. I definitely didn't tell them that! I knew some other people in the Army with milk allergies to. They said the same thing: They didn't tell the recruiter. My Dad is a Vietnam vet. He served over 20 years, mostly in the National Guard. He always said, I'd never be able to join, because I'm allergic to Milk. My recruiter advised me not to tell them anything if they don't specifically ask about it. They never asked if I was allergic to milk, if I'm autistic o. if I have ADHD. I have all the above. But, even if they would have asked, I wouldn't have told them. More advice from my recruiter. I didn't know I was autistic until I got out of the Army. Then, a VA Psychiatrist diagnosed me with that. I knew I had ADHD, diagnosed in 5th grade. I always knew about my milk allergy. Put it this way: My recruiter said this to me: I cannot tell you to lie. But, READ BETWEEN THE LINES! How bad do you want to get in the Army? I said, "Very badly!" I told him that my Dad, a retired Warrant Officer, Vietnam vet, with over 20 years in the military, always said I'd never be able to join because I'm allergic to Milk." He said, "Let me ask you One thing. Are you allergic to Milk? I said, "Yes." He said, "You don't hear what I'm saying. Let me ask you again, are you allergic to Milk?" I said, "Yes." He said again, "You don't understand what I'm saying, are you allergic to Milk?" I said, "YES!" He said, "How bad do you want to get in the Army?" I said, "Really badly!" He said, "Then let me ask again, are you allergic to Milk?" I said, "Nope!" He said, "Good." Being autistic makes it hard for me to "read between the lines in a situation like this and understand what someone is saying without actually saying the words they want to say, but, they can't come out and say it. But, again I say, "I can't tell you to lie, but, READ BETWEEN THE LINES! I told this exact same thing to my nephew. He is also autistic. We both have Asperger's. He hasn't joined the Army yet. He is 20 years old. I don't know if he's actually going to join. But, he has talked about it. He has other medical issues to. Including problems with his Intestines and minor Jaundice (Yellow skin). That is usually caused by: Alcoholism, Hepatitis or fat deposits in the Liver. He's not an alcoholic and he doesn't have Hepatitis. It's probably fat deposits in his Liver. He can't hide Jaundice from the military Doctors. So, that might cause a problem for him. (BTW, I was Motor Transport Operator 88M. I was also a Combat Lifesaver. I studied Medical Assisting in college when I got out. The Army College Fund and GI Bill paid for all but $3,000 of my college classes.)

I disagree with the advice telling the recruiter, "I only want a specific job." When I went into the military, I knew I wanted to be a computer programmer. I also wanted to go into the Navy (I grew up as a Navy brat). However, the Navy wouldn't write a contract guaranteeing that I would be a programmer. They could only guarantee I'd work with computers in some fashion. So, I joined the Army where they would write a contract that guaranteed I'd be a programmer. It was the smartest thing I ever did by far. Get your guarantee. You will need to score high on the ASVAB though, so study before taking it. That was 30 years ago, and I did the exact same job at lieutenants, captains, and GS13s, and after 4 years I got a job doing the same that paid really well, and I've been doing it ever since. Yet, working as a programmer in the Army was the best job I ever had.

I can remember when I was about to graduate from college with a Biology degree. My thinking was “I just completed one of the hardest majors to earn a degree in with a respectable GPA. If nothing else I’ve demonstrated I have ability.”. So my thinking was that the armed services (this was in the mid 80’s) would be interested in someone with some ability. So my Uncle, who was a physician and a Vietnam era Marine advised me along the same lines you did. Answer their question honesty and concisely. Don’t volunteer any information they don’t ask for and think before you speak. Also, let them tell you what jobs they have for you. Don’t tell them what you want to do. So to my consternation at each interview with a recruiter (and I spoke to the Army, Navy, Air Force and Marine Corp) the same thing happened. When questions got to my education and I told them I had a Bachelors degree in Biology the interview pretty much came to a stop and I was told “I’m sorry but at this time the, insert branch of service here, would not be interested in your services, thank you for your interest in serving your nation.”. When I asked why I was basically two things. #1. Outside of Nursing we don’t have many roles for life science majors unless you have a PhD or Doctorate. #2. Folks with your educational background usually don’t fit in well in military service. The first point I understood but the second one completely baffled me. Long story short I went to grad school instead.
@dansmith55053 жыл бұрын
The second point is because when people are young, they are used to following orders. If you have already been through college, you already have experience living on your own and living your life a certain way, and people who are college educated usually don't take well to being told what to do. The other aspect is that training someone is quite expensive. If you already have a degree, you likely are only going to stay for the minimum amount of time because you already have pursued other options. Uncle Sam isn't going to get maximum return on you if you leave. When you have had a doctorate, you have essentially exhausted the end of your academic career, and the fact you are joining in spite of that likely means you intend to make the military your long term career. You aren't likely to leave to go into education for a non-military job. This is ultimately in your best interest as well. You are already primed for another career path, it is best for you to fully explore that path before jumping into another. It isn't like you can't serve your country even if you aren't military. I know a dentist who frequently went to Afghanistan because he did dental work for marines, which was a big help because it meant people weren't cycled back home over a toothache that could have been prevented.

Sometimes I can get up a little earlier, but only for something fun, and only rarely. I do not like being wet! Rain is fine, but I don't like getting in the water and being submerged. No shouting! I am to be addressed in a calm, reasonable tone or I'll respond very rudely. Let's keep it civil, shall we? No scratchy clothes! I just don't like them. I always have a bottle of diet root beer with me at all times. I'll need to be able to always either have it it my hand or secured safely in an accessible place. Obviously I can't be doing anything to rambunctious or it'll get jostled and spill and I might get sticky. I'll also need a little rolling cooler for backups. I need to be really high up in rank right off the bat. I don't want to work hard for a bunch of weeks and not be promoted! That's it, as he says, I should be honest.

This seems good advice for a lot of job interview / enrolment situations. I once told an interview panel of nurses that ‘ I would do anything..’ in order to get out of the ‘chickenshit outfit’ I was working for at the time . I then spent three years working on a horrible ward where no one else wanted to work.

I had asthma from the time I was about 5 till 17..I day till 17 due to a fun fact..the tear gas chamber sorted it..never had an issue with it since. No did not tell the recruiter nor ever admitted it to the Army, if they would have found out about it out I got a medical discharge and probably a general discharge it's not like they would throw you in jail for it. I will offer this advise, the one thing I noticed with tear gas in people with asthma vs. People without asthma the people without asthma can sometimes breathe through it more often than not if you have asthma or history of it your lungs will just not work so you better be prepared for that when you go in that gas chamber you will not be able to breathe but you can work though it if you want it bad enough.

This video is now slightly outdated. They now use a new system called genesis that can pull medical records without consent. Neither me nor my recruiter disclosed my childhood asthma but they still found it. It didn't disqualify me but it's an important heads-up to people that think they'll still be able to get away with not disclosing their information anymore. Sadly that is no longer the case.

JT, with all due respect, I was the guy who mentioned my Asthma in the Recruiting Office. I mentioned I had Asthma, what has turned out to be a life-long Acute Asthma. That ended the interview there and then. I was crushed. It was 1984 and what I couldn't be told back then was that earlier that year, two lads with Asthmatic back-grounds died on PT Runs; one guy had had Asthma but had 'grown-out' of the Asthma and didn't need an inhaler, the other guy still had an Acute form and didn't let on but tried to hide the inhalers. Wearing nothing but a t-shirt/vest, shorts and light running shoes, there was no hiding an inhaler for the second guy and the first guy had indeed had more recent Asthma attacks than he realised or let on. They died of Hypoxia before they could be stabilised. (In more recent times, a Cadet died in her sleep, Hypoxia being the cause of death, after a PT run or some heavy activity earlier that day. Turned out she was Asthmatic also.) I didn't find this out until my own sister, who had 'Child-Hood Bronchial Asthma', was going for her Sergeants Stripe in the T.A. here in the UK, but before she could get the stripe and rank, she was tested on every physio-metric monitoring machine the Army had. Although she completed all the tests asked of her, hooked up to air-fed masks and extraction devices, she was failed. That meant she had to leave the T.A., not bitter but crushed all the same. She told me that with my Asthma, I wouldn't have made it off the first PT Run either. Six months later, after my sister left the T.A., Yugoslavia broke up and the Bosnian/Croatian War started up. Of the UK forces sent to the former Soviet State, many were taken from the Ranks of the T.A. I suppose we both 'dodged a bullet', as it were. No Asthmatic grows out of Asthma fully. Modern Steroidal treatments have helped but they are not a cure. Like said, told with all due respect. Thank you.

The Asthma thing i disagree with... I never knew i had it, i just knew that when i got breathing heavily it would start to weeze a bit. Being a civillian of course if i got to that point, id just stop running and take a break so it never really got to the point that i knew i had it... the military doesn't give you that option, i quickly found out that after weezing a bit comes full-on restricted air ways. It wasn't that i was out of shape... far from it... I mean, i could run 2 miles before i even started having heavy breathing. The problem was that soon as i started breathing hard, it went downhill fast. If you wanna find out what if feels like.... just hold your breath as you run a mile. Once your in the Military, they will NEVER sign off on Asthma. To this day once a doctor finds out that i was in the service, they clam up and refuse to admit my condition, and i've been out of the military for 30 years now.

When I wanted to join the Army I wanted was Airborne Infantry when I was in high school. So I did want that specific job and got it by being stubborn about it. My recruiter an E-6 brought me to the main station to talk to the station commander who was an E-7. I told the E-7 that I want to be in Infantry and go to Airborne School otherwise I wouldn't be happy if I did join with any other MOS. That E-7 said to give him 30 minutes and see what he can do. He went into another office and got on the phone and talked to someone on the other line. After talking for about 10 minutes to who ever he started yelling and said "I want this guy for infantry and Airborne School right now! If you fuck this up I can't afford to lose another No Go! You better find a slot now!". About 10 minutes later he came back to me and said "Hold on Son, I will get what you want.". The phone rang and the E-7 talked to him and I saw a smile on his face. He came back out and told me they found a spot for me a date for Basic Training, Infantry School, and a Airborne School class after. I was fucking happy and was about to print my contract to me. The E-7 didn't lie to me. He said that I was guaranteed that I pass Basic Training and Infantry School with above average performance and graduate that I can be on the next class for Airborne. The recruiters wrote and printed my contract that day and I was very happy. I got a delayed entry contract which gave me 7 months to prepare but I have been preparing since I started high school. I got all the pamphlets to all the requirements for the required standards for Airborne. I ran 10 miles after school, did 100 push ups a day along with a hundred sit ups, 5, 10, 15, and 20 pull ups if I was lucky to reach that many. I did this everyday for 5-6 days a week. Hiked uphill with 50 pounds with a surplus ALICE rucksack for 10 miles once a week. When I got to Ft. Benning I did well and became a squad leader for both Basic and AIT. Did my job because I couldn't and will not fail because I wanted Airborne. Basic and Infantry AIT was a breeze but not easy but I had to preform better or equal to the other Airborne and Ranger Contracts that I did. There were 15 Airborne and Ranger Contracts in my training company, only 7 made it. The others went to be assigned to regular infantry units worldwide. At Airborne School only me and 3 guys in my Company made it to jump week and did our 5 qualifying jumps to earn our Jump Wings. The rest were eliminated or quit during the first 2 weeks. What was amazing to me that Airborne School was very demanding but also fun. I had to keep my mind focused and my body well tuned and listen and learn because everyday you are tested as you progress. The Black Hats are always watching and keep notes on everyone. I had to pass PT everyday with exercises and runs at a decent 7 mile pace for 4 miles and 5 miles on Fridays. Black Hats are always looking for failures every minute. You were graded everyday on everything, uniforms, shinny boots, equipment, attention to detail, training etc. to include attitude. Any fuck up you were gone to be recycled or you quit or kicked out. Airborne only wants the best, the Black Hat Instructors will help you but it's up to you to learn. Jumping out of airplanes will surely in my opinion 80% is successful that you land no matter how messed up in landing with no injuries, 10% with serious injuries, and 10% that you will get killed. Paratroopers on jump status will take those chances. Once in an Airborne unit, no one will care if you quit but they can take your wings away if you terminate jump status negatively because it's a skills badge. Unless you get injured or move to PCS to another unit which don't require you to jump in Leg Land. Then you can keep your jump wings. Otherwise Airborne has no problem of recruiting or getting volunteers who are already parachute qualified or get Leg volunteers to become Paratroopers. Airborne only demands the best soldiers.

People's stories like you and many others are what give me motivation in wanting to join the military. I graduated from college 2 weeks ago at the age of 22. I talked to the National Guard recruiter and I told him I want to be an officer and he told me a lot of info that was very helpful and managed to get me a phone call with a Major to talk about it. I sent in all my medical documents, transcripts and everything else. The only thing I need to do is do the ASVAB and get my contract that I want. Airborne units give out Ranger School like Christmas presents every year in all the Airborne Infantry Battalions. Ranger School is a leadership school. The 82nd Airborne has a Pre-Ranger Course taught by guys who have been to Ranger School or they came from Ranger Batt. If you go through as a direct enlistment in a Ranger Contract, they have a very high failure rate because guys coming out of Basic and Infantry School don't have enough knowledge and experience. I'm in the process of enrollment for the CAF and my recruiter has been great, he's straight to the point supportive and overall I feel like I've got a good chance. I had a telephone interview with him last week and it was all simply yes sir no sir questions, only bit of extra I went on was how I've been preparing physically doing tons of running and pushups so I'm better off for BMQ. So far its been good I'm almost at the point of enrollment for Army Communications Equipment Specialist, which is what I really wanted to try for, but there are so many options and I was prepared for the possibility I might've had to switch it up. But the fact that people will tell their recruiter to **** off is mind boggling.
