0:48 You cannot believe how fluid this is in my case! I have so many options for the 2nd part of my project... 1:54 We need to finish within 4 years, but agreed on the task-dividing! Piece by piece 5:04 Indeed, you need to develop self-criticism and self-reliance. So if you have a problem, best to come with x amount of options to circumvent and present these instead of just posing the problem and expecting the PI to solve it. 6:29 An extra cup of (PhD)Coffee(Time)? ;) 9:46 BULLSEYE! Thank you very much ! Actually, I'm not sure why I watched this video... because its something I perhaps needed much earlier. However, your calm, organized and sincere explanation definitely helped me understand some points better 👍 To be honest, I very recently exited PhD after 5 yrs with an MS (Research). And, now I am kind of clueless about what should be my future direction. My social and personal life is also hazy and causes anxiety. Basically, right now I kinda hate this all-or-nothing, uncertain gamble called PhD. I find learning about my research area interesting, but I'm not sure if I'm really into always being on the bleeding edge, and constantly exploring things too. Also, sometimes it feels later on Prof.s actually don't do anything, and their PhD candidates are kinda like indentured slaves and they basically become fund-procurers socializing only, with little or no research... I'm not sure if I wanna be such a hypocritical person taking credit for other's research too. And, not sure if I wanna got back to Software Engineering jobs with boring, stupid client-facing requirements either. I'm a bit lost. But, thanks for sharing your wisdom with fellow PhD new entrants 🙂

Hi Abhishek, thank you for sharing your story here. A PhD is certainly a huge commitment. Exiting on the 5th year is a pity but not a big deal. In fact, if you are not targeting an academic career, it could be an advantage. In many cases, having a line that says PhD on the resume confuses many employers. The job market still doesn't know how to fit a PhD in a company because many people believe that PhDs over qualify for a job. It is common to feel lost, so you are not alone. Here is what I could suggest: (1) explore externally - what are the similar alumni doing after an MS? (2) explore internally - what do you do best? @@PhDCoffeeTime Thanks, Vera, for your thoughtful reply :) Actually, in here (India), there aren't many who exit with an MS by Research (yet), and the stigma associated with it kinda means people who do don't really announce and quietly slip away. That way it becomes harder to trace any alumni who have this degree, as opposed to those who've graduated with a PhD. However, I agree that would be best place to find advice. I'll try Regarding what I'm best at, that's perhaps a tough one. Frankly, I don't really know.. perhaps, because I might've not dabbled enough in areas (with job market) to know where my skills might lie. And, although my interest is towards Visual/Geometric Computing, where I have demonstrated sufficient adeptness might be more menial Web development, in my job before jumping into PhD. Thankfully, now I've better Machine Learning skills which might be a saving grace due to Data science trends now. I've watched your other video and posted a Like. I was really impressed with your never-ending Scholar profile paper list :D Also, I'm your Subscriber now ✌️ I hope you're better able to decide what u want next. Hi Kothai, I have gained a lot from Natalia's workshop and book, the questions she asked are so valuable to me, and as a result I have become a lot more aware of "what brings happiness to my life", "what kind of career would be the most fulfilling to the way I would like to work with others". She recently has developed the ODYSSEY test, and you could also give it a try along with the book. If you have the budget, her workshop was greatly comprehensive and I highly recommend it.

In fact, I have met many helpful network who has helped me a lot in job prep, I actually have landed a job this month. Hi, Kaxar, I know it's too late, but just in case you are still searching...I personally checked the professors' profiles in each university I wanted to study a PhD at. If I found one whose work and projects aligned with my needs, I would write a direct email to them expressing my interest. Many won't even answer the emails, but some of them might show interest in your ideas. Some of them will ask for a more defined project plan while some might just accept your raw ideas to start.
