I just watched a video that said to do a white background for a normal size room and do a black background for large lecture halls.

In recent years, we've seen a trend of academics, including some tenured professors, choosing to leave their positions. This shift raises questions about the long-term value of postdoctoral roles in today's changing academic landscape
@geoffreyrothwell27073 ай бұрын
I was basically a 25-year “post-doc” at Stanford. I started as a post-doc at Caltech while delaying my start of an Assistant Prof position in Canada. Then I followed a bunch of professors from Caltech to Stanford as an “Acting Asst Prof.” (in the role of a post-doc). After 6 years, the deans decided I had been acting too long, so they made me a lecturer (teaching and research) . 5 years later after a tenure-like review, I was promoted to Senior Lecturer (still doing the same work as when I started at Stanford, i.e., managing projects for full professors.) Eventually I left Stanford for the OECD in Paris. I am still living in France. At Stanford I was treated like a post-doc (no committee responsibilities), but outside of Stanford, I was treated as a researcher from Stanford. I wish I had gotten tenure at a top 10 university, but my career as a 25-year post-doc at Stanford appears to have been successful. The problem with this strategy in general is ending up in the adjunct bin and spending all of your time teaching. You would be better off working for a government agency where they encourage research.

Same with the music. I used to be able to have something tuneful in the background, but these days I find that distracting. Definitely agree with the alpha ways - I find it calms my mind and helps me to focus much better when reading or writing. 📚

Thank you, these are great tips and very clear and thought out advice. I'm definitely going to save this video to rewatch when I start my PhD in September.

A career postdoc is a thing in the UK (in Scotland, at least... my colleague at U. Edinburgh is one). His position may be called something else, though. It took me two postdocs, five years, and multiple relocations between countries to land a temporary faculty position (which also expired eventually). I'm a full professor now. Looking back, it has been a troubling career.

When I was a graduate student once you were told you had enough data for your thesis, they told us to step back from the bench to identify a potential postdoc lab. While it seemed a bit scary it turned out to be blessing. As I was transitioning from the bench to writing I had not only arraigned a postdoc, my NIH postdoctoral fellowship. As a result, I was able to focus all my energy into writing my thesis.

Thank you for telling your story about transitioning to Zotero from Endnote. Will you please share how you did it? I use Endnote, and I want to transition to Zotero, but I have over 500 articles. How do I do it? I tried using the import button from Zotero, but it returned an error that it didn't recognize the format. Please advise.

After watching some of her videos, I set my mind. No postdoc. I don't wanna be a professor though I managed to achieve a slightly flashy resume by 1yr before finishing my PhD. Plus, I got a 2yr kid. Can't afford such a low-paying high-intense and uncetain job.

Had a phd scholarship lined up. Decided not to do it because the future was so bleak, I knew I would have to move country all the time so wouldn't be able to have a family. Two kids later, I dont regret a thing.
