I think I have made all of those mistakes at least once. One time I scanned a patient under a wrong name, and let her go, but caught that it wasn't her name on the screen before I send the images. So I had to call her back, and she was kind enough to return back same day for an additional scan. OMG, I felt horrible, and ever since I always look at the screen and make them to repeat their name and birthday.

Thank you for letting me know I'm not alone in these scenarios!! And I'm glad that you were able to fix it!! A mistake you made but now you'll never make again. It's all a learning process. So proud of you for getting through that and learning! (We all have been there, so don't feel horrible!)

Don't have this fear. Just be confident with what you see and what you can describe. Otherwise, there's always another scan and maybe another person can hopefully help!

I am a new grad and at my first job, and I have done the right patient on the wrong name mistake, too! Just happened to me last month! 😢 I was super embarrassed because I called my manager thinking my images didn't go through. 😫 I am very thankful I wasn't the only one making that kind of mistake. I felt like such an idiot . Thank you for your channel, it really helps!! 😊 ❤

Don't feel like an idiot. We all make mistakes. Now that you've made it, hopefully it's taught you to take more time to make sure you have the correct patient and correct exam selected. I am proud of you for being a sonographer and helping others. I appreciate you following and watching! You are awesome!!

I didn’t scan the wrong patient BUT… it was a busy night by myself. I got to the person before registration got to her. I got her name and birthday and it matched my machine. I did the exam. Ended it and got the next patient in the ER. After a couple scans I get to write up the worksheets. My first patient isn’t there. I go back to the machine- it’s there. Then I realize she changed her last name when she talked to registration. I was panicking calling my manager at 10pm and had to bother CT to port I’m images from the old name to new name 😂

Oh my gosh, yeah that's so interesting how changing names can make such a big difference/ be a hassle/ worry us... I've seen that happen before too lol. I'm glad you were able to fix it! Thank you for sharing! Lol!!

I thought ultrasound techs don’t have to diagnose or find anything, i thought they just preform the scan & send it to the radiologist to look at
@lolgeselle

We technically don't diagnose, but we help the doctors diagnose. So if we don't catch it, find it, describe it etc, the doctors won't see it either from our exam. But we learn with time that we cannot see everything.

There is a saying in sonography " We don't diagnose, we describe." Which is why a knowledge of normal heathy anatomy and physiology is so important. Generally, they perform the protocols to find the important landmarks in a scan but will do additional scans if they know that something doesn't look like its supposed to.

Thank you so much! Well, in general... I just take in the criticism or whatever they're saying as a learning lesson. I took it really hard at first, but as you keep going you learn you did the best you can under the circumstances you're in. I am the one dealing with the difficult patients etc and I can't let a doctor who is mad or stressed keep me from doing my job/ bring me down. It's stressful but we learn with each interaction/ thing that happens to us in our career.

What do people do for income when they're in their clinical stage? I'm in my early 40's and have really been interested in this field. But I'm concerned once getting into the clinical stage as its full time and according to the college info sheet they mention to not work? I really don't have this option. I have kids, mortgage and so on. My oldest will be graduating this year and will be heading ro college next fall. Any tips and suggestions? Currently, I'm enrolled in a cc for A.s. degree but I'm just doing prerequisites for a different degree but I've been wanting to change it. 🥴

Hey there. Many people work side hustles or jobs that allow them to have more flexibility. This may be a sacrifice you have to go through but know that at the end of the program and when you get that first job you will (hopefully) be compensated with a higher waged career. If you have family or friends / support group to help you, that will be your best bet! Good luck 🥹 if you need people to talk to, join our discord!
