I have been doing some hiking in Europe and this movie just captures the thru-hiking experience like no other video could. In a weird way, it made me feel homesick for an adventure I have never been on. It made me decide to slowly start working towards doing the PCT, probably in 2019. I just want to say thank you!

Wow thanks! Hope you get out there someday... or go on something else you want.

@Emiel Wittevrongel Wow. May the prevailing wind be at your back. I hope you make it, dude. I suspect you may be Swiss, Austrian or German. I was in Germany years ago and did short day hikes through forests visiting villages (Dörfer), etc., and got a sense of the unique Central European-ness felt on such journeys in such villages. As the video shows, the PCT will have similarities only to some of the weather (at times), environment, character, that one would see in European hiking trails or camping areas, but although the video doesn't make the comparison expressly, its content shows water availability, environmental and topological differences, etc., between PCT and European trails. I'd stand by Zach Rotondo's admonitions regarding water, remoteness, dehydration and so on first and foremost, but if you do your logistics right to make for a great hike, I think you'll be stunned by the beauty and sense of Liberty one might experience, viewing a golden sunset, say, tent posted and sleeping bag unwrapped, enjoying some H20 and a meal, at 9200+ feet on Mt. Baden Powell. There is design and beauty that transcends human ken.

I am a Canadian living in Germany since 2012. I discovered hiking shortly after moving here (I hike in Tirol and Sudtirol area) and now I have this big regret of not exploring north american hikes. I am in my 30s working for a tech company, no children, there is a yearning to go on a big adventure like this. Been watching AT and PCT videos for a few weeks. I think I would pick the PCT for remoteness and complete break with my experience of forest and mountain hiking in the Austrian Alps. Anyway, great video. And Good luck to all the Europeans going on this trail!

Thanks Zach. All these PCT videos with professional cinematography and equipment are nice and all... But what really makes me nostalgic for the trail is seeing a bunch of weirdos having a blast.
@northofyou337 жыл бұрын
A bunch of weirdos is right. This makes me much more hesitant to try this as a solo female hiker.
@akhikes6 жыл бұрын
I hiked the PCT last summer (2017) & met many, many, many solo female hikers and none of them had any issues. 99.9% of people you meet on trail are amazingly, genuine people all with the same goal of hopefully getting to Canada.

About to do a section hike of the Norcal part of the trail, thanks for this much more realistic and down-to-earth version of how trail life goes. Watched the whole thing through, it gives a different perspective than a vast majority of the videos that are constantly waxing poetic about things. Props for all the work you put in, and I never would have guessed Micky D's was a viable trail food.

Hey Zach - Outstanding video! I'm an old fart (67) who has done about 500 miles of both the PCT and AT in sections a few decades ago plus multiple thousands of miles in shorter trips and general hiking. My dream was to finish the PCT in long sections, but I got started too late in life and now have two total knee replacements from the heavy packs in my days of hiking (plus soccer, 40-miles-per week running for years, etc.) so my window for doing the trail is past. But I really enjoy the videos of current thru hikers and yours is the best I've seen for conveying the on-trail experience. Congrats - and when you get to be my age, you'll really be happy you made the decision to go for it when you did. I must say your experience with various McThings both amazed and worried me - I kept expecting the next part of the video to show you recovering from food gone bad - glad it worked out and that you shared it with us. I think... :-)

Zach, I'm not even half way done with this but I have to say it's brilliant. And it's probably due to the fact that you didn't plan on filming your hike. It's raw and true and captures perfectly the spontaneity and unexpected encounters of such an adventure. Judging by the comments and views Other people feel the same way. It's a cult classic. I've watched countless polished and well produced hiker videos and they can't touch this. You've nailed it. Thank you! I'm going to savor this like it's my last mcdouble. Cheers!

They sure do. You hiked during one of the best years in quite a while. No wildfires in Oregon, decent weather, water sources were good :). I hiked a section in August and I LOVED it!
@mpoisot7 жыл бұрын
Thanks for putting this together! It's refreshing to get a big dose of norcal, oregon and washington. All the other PCT vids I've come across have a ton of desert and sierra, but the 2nd half of the trip is just a blip. I guess they're no longer excited or just plain too tired to film after the first 2 sections. Washington looks incredible! Any idea what the daytime and nighttime temps were towards the end (when you were cold all the time)? Would you recommend getting more warm clothing for the last stretch?
@zachrotondo7 жыл бұрын
Marcel Poisot thanks! I was kinda the opposite, filmed more as the hike progressed. The last month or so had to have dipped below freezing on some nights - things froze. I'd swap my light down for a fleece like a melanzana if I could go back in time. Maybe some waterproof socks too - the zip lock trick had its limits. Feet felt like icicles towards the end.

For instance, like you, everyone seems to just show up at Campo, how does someone get from the San Diego Airport to Campo? I have no idea. I appreciate the great info this video and your comments have provided.

Maximus Meridius good luck! I don't have exact contacts but search trail angels in SD. I knew a lot of people that were dropped off that way. Also a bus. Reach out if you ever have a question ✌️

@Max I'm also planning for 2018. It looks like a lot of people get help from Frodo and Scout for the initial launch. They let you stay a night at their place in SD, feed you, and give you a ride to the trail head. Otherwise you could fly then take a bus, a train, another bus, and walk... Clearly the former sounds better! sandiegopct.com/

Max, I am planning on hiking the PCT in 2018 too! Would be great to get in contact. I am from England, so making plans from here. Zach, Can I ask ask... When should I be leaving Campo... I keep reading slightly different pieces of advice.

Hey Daisy, we need to defer to what Zack has to say about when to leave Campo, but I believe when you apply for your thru-hike permit with PCTA, they tell you when to launch from Campo. They have made a significant change this year in that there is no more large group send offs as the trail was just getting too trampled, so now they have staggered send offs. Which is too bad in my opinion, I would have liked the large group photo of fellow hikers at the start. I also believe (personal opinion here), that the more people you know (group send off) you greater respect people would have for the trail. If you launch and you are alone I think there would be a greater tendency to people to not respect the trail (ie: disregard for proper poop etiquette, etc.) -time will tell if I am right or wrong. As for getting in contact, that would be great. I am in Canada and it would be great to share gear and planning preps with someone. How do we connect? Any suggestions?

watching this movie makes me wanna get up and Go!!!! Doing a 300km thru hike this summer in Newfoundland,ECT. Hoping that i will be able to pull that of with success. If all goes well PCT is next on my list. GREAT JOB my friend!! The experience, the people, the views on life, you must come out as a different person. What was the most challenging part for you? was it the trail, the thoughts? Hike on!!

Good luck! I'd say the toughest part was staying positive during a stretch where I wasn't with close friends. Just wasn't as fun. But I hooked back up with them.

Randomly stumbled upon this video, and I've nearly watched it all. Did you have a lot of hiking experience before embarking on this journey? What was the longest hike you'd done previously? And how long did you give yourself to prepare before setting out? Great video dude. And awesome work on the hike itself! Hats off to you.

thanks for watching! I never hiked anything like this before... did quite a bit growing up, but stopped once I got older. Maybe at most a 30 mile loop in NH. I didn't plan much. Got a permit, had an app with maps/gps/spots where I could resupply, and bought gear I didn't have a month or two before hiking. Then hit the trail and figured it out as I went.
