With Victric you can use fluting for the saucer pattern

As a woman who loves unique home decor, I love the idea of reimagining the saucer as a large tray. Great ideas, Andy, as always. 🙂

I love the coasters but I think I may try making the candle holders, but maybe going the animal route, not just holidays/seasons

As others have said you could certainly machine a flute that is thin at one end and thick at the other by doing a V-carve technique with a ball-end router bit, coding simple radial cuts. But that's only giving you a copy of the saucer. What's nice about the etsy product is it's a matched cup and saucer. You could in principle replicate the cup in wood, but it would be uneconomic. Suppose you chose a different starting point: You find a dollar-store or better cup or glass that has an attractive and unusual design feature, but it does not come with a paired saucer or tray, or whatever might round it out as a set. Then you design your wood (or Corian or other routable material) object that mirrors the attractive design feature on the cheap thing, making a set out of it, and you have your unique product offerring.

I've seen you make inlayed cutting boards and choochkies. What has the better margins? Do you think selling a lot of small priced products is more lucrative than selling a few expensive projects? And which are easier to market?

The turtle looks cute. I like also the 3D carved animal toys for kids (most of the toys are 2D). Customized Coasters are also a good source of income... if we make them in a profitable way....

These are great ideas. It is an awesome reminder that a project doesn't have to be complex or intricate to have design appeal. I am a perfectionist, so I have a really hard time overlooking "flaws" in my work because who the heck would want to buy that piece of junk? For me, the single hardest challenge isn't figuring out what to make, it remains how to get my products into the hands of buyers. I live in Alaska, and there are no flea market or permanent market places here. There are a lot of craft fairs, but that is a balancing act on it's own (how to make enough of the right product to justify the booth set up fee, and not end up being a "carbon copy" booth). There are a bunch of really good crafters here at the shows and I'm worried about standing out in the crowd. I feel like the booths I've seen have people that make 200 items to bring to a show, probably hundreds of hours in labor and thousands of dollars in materials. It just seems hard to compete.

Could you befriend one of the crafters and learn from them?

@@AndyBirdBuilds I talk with them every time I go to a show, it's not always the easiest conversation when you're in generally the same space. I did see a vendor selling smalls for the first time last weekend though.

My wife & I started small with just some small items. There were shows that we barely made enough to cover the table cost. The key we found was always have some cheap items with the big items. For us it was lasered Christmas ornaments. Just the 2-3" wood slices with a string at $2. There were a few times that's all we sold were those, but they sell all year round. Remember, whatever doesn't sell is product you don't have to make for the next show. We've now been at it for 13 years and we are the stand that others are trying to copy. Don't be afraid to jump in and build over time.

Hi Andy, thanks for another great video! I am just wondering, I am just getting into CNC and I’ve bought a Genmitsu 4040 pro and I need to upgrade the spindle. if I get a 800 W which is about the largest it would take, would I be able to make these projects and some bowls and things like that? Of course I’ll have the really good bits that you sell on your website!! 😃

To make that saucer grooves go wider near the outside do a 3d carve to make the general shape, then use the fluting toolpath. Just make it so the line of the toolpath goes deeper into the saucer as it gets further out. Use a v bit and it will get wider as it cuts deeper

Andy this is a great video with great inspiration. These are some of your best videos. For me the Dinosaur 🦖 wall hook🪝stands out for pretty much the same reasons you said (A.) I could see them in pretty much any kids rooms…. Or even in rooms of adults that have a child’s mindset. (B.) The costs wouldn’t be all that much & (C.) Super easy to make, can make them quickly & in bigger quantities. Plus (D.) it’s kinda unique (to me anyways) & not something you see everywhere. Also I’m looking forward to that 2025 list too…. I know it’s gonna be good! 👍

I'm not sure about v vcarve pro, but the texture on that plate would be easy in Fusion 360. I would not 3d carve it. That would take forever. Ball end mill, single line passes would knock it out quickly.
@AndyBirdBuildsАй бұрын
I went back and forth on this because the 3d would take so long. Thanks for sharing

@AndyBirdBuilds I accomplish many patterns and textures by leveraging tool shapes. I'm usually doing this in aluminum, but it works no matter the material. Let's say I want a 3d diamond pattern on a flat surface. I don't 3d carve it. That takes way too long. I draw a line pattern in the cad side, over my model. I don't bother trying to draw it into the modal as it's usually decorative in my case. I move right into the cam side and tinker with the look of pattern by picking different tools. Let's say between V60/90/120 and adjusting the depth and maybe hopping back to the cad side and changing the angles and spacing between lines. But being a pattern, this is changed in seconds. I see the results in the simulation, so just the lines are necessary. And your tool just fallows them. Saves a ton of time.

So do you rotate inventory on your site according to season or if it has been up for x amount of days?
@duanealdrichjr.538Ай бұрын
In Vectric, I think a fluting path would probably work for the saucer tray.
