I remember 8 years ago, a few months after getting my first bike (after owning a scooter for 2 years) I went to tesco to fill up on the way into work, I killed the engine via the kill switch. After filling up the bike wouldn't turn back on, 20 mins I was looking around trying to find out what was up with it, just before I called breakdown recovery I noticed the neutral light wasn't turning on when the ignition was turned on. Turns out I killed the bike while it was in 1st gear. So it does happen, and I had to make up for lost time on the 'English Autobahn' 😂 I have also polished my seat on my scooter, and you'd think you wouldn't be stupid enough to do it twice, but I genuinely thought it was just something to do with the shampoo/soap I was using being a car shampoo/soap...... don't polish your seat, leave that for your helmet 😉

A top tip ive found with levers and stuff is to buy them from germany. All vehicle modifications have to apply to the TUV standard, so they are always engineered to work. Admittedly it is a bit more expensive but the 'cheapo' levers you get from over there are still very high quality.

I stick with OEM, they are unpainted, so I get them powder coated. That in itself looks better.

@@forevercomputing yeah OEM levers are fine in my opinion. I only changed mine because my dad knocked the end of the clutch lever off in the garage.

@@hrld6892 Actually, it's a benefit to me to keep OEM levers as I have 4x Hondas, scooters and motorcycles, the levers are practically interchangeable. Different part numbers, but if one breaks - I can get a spare, or less damaged spare and use that. Might get some adjustables if the missus wants to ride and can't use the levers properly.

I am glad you pointed out the danger of trying to clean a moving chain. Not long ago I saw a video of a guy from Indonesia showing exactly this, when I commented that it was a good way to lose fingers, he replied that it was ok because he was an expert (ho ho). There is some dangerous misinformation loose on U-tube. I can only think of about six channels that are completely reliable, and I am glad to say yours is near the top of the list

Yes, the wax on the seat is a no no, also armor all type vinyl/leather preserving products as well. Here is a tip for oil changes..... If your bike has an external spin on type oil filter. MAKE SURE that the oil filter gasket does NOT stick to the engine block. I have seen it happen before. You don't even want to know how I know this. lol

Some 40 years after getting my first 'bike' (a Fizzy, yes I'm that bloody old) I still remember the pain from a hard stop after polishing the seat! Use baby wipes on the seat, they clean without any 'teflon' effect. Nice one Spicy, these need to be made, great presentation and some good advice.

Superb video Spicy , as a newbie myself I find your videos very informative and entertaining . Mind you my old skool honda needed a wee bit of work when I got it so learned quite a bit from tinkering with it and it has zero electronic cut outs on it so you learn quickly what not to do when kick-starting it 😂

Excellent video.... Now this brings me to a question I've been meaning to ask.... The crown jewels and an XJ6... Did my DAS on one, but my instructor warned us that the XJ6 is a nut killer... And boy was he right, the crotch pressure was terrible. I test rode one the other week as in the market for a new bike, I had hope that after 10 years and at the dawn of middle age I hoped maybe the nadjers had shrunk a bit and an XJ6 would be bearable .... Nope....just as bad! Even tried one with an aftermarket seat... still bad! Do you find this at all? Apologies for the personal question on the destruction of your valuable parts. And yeah.... How many dealers, more interested in making a sale, polish up the bloody seat! Drives me nuts (and there they are making an appearance again)!

Cleaning the chain with engine on is the most tempting thing to do but so so so much dangerous, I always knew that rule number one but I tried once to do it with a wooden brush and was seriously focused and carful but it somehow did catch on the sprocket and I was just so happy this was not my finger.. this thing should be learned over and over again on motorcycle schools, so important

When you were saying about the killswitch I thought you were going to say people try to start it with it off... Which I did on one of my first rides... I'd accidentally flicked it backing the bike up out of a parking spot with it off and hadn't noticed. Took me over 30s of trying to start to realise. Felt so dumb.

I have a ZSX-R, Does not start if the side stand is down. Period. Many embarrassing moments when I'm sat on the bike and the starter is going for longer than it should... You should do a video on false neutral, and Gear change blocks until you engage clutch to the biting point etc - for new starters, knowing how to resolve this would be really useful

In my 35 years of buying bikes I only ever (once) DIDN'T test ride a 2nd hand bike prior to handing over the cash, because the guy wouldn't let me test ride. I bought it (it was 3 months old) on spec, got 2 miles down the road before I realised what he was hiding. ALWAYS test ride before handing the cash over, and if they won't let you test ride, walk away.

Buy tank protection sticker if u have a zipper on ur jacket jumper it will scratch ut tank in the wind. Buying brand new bike and paying for dealer services will cost you more to keeping your warranty then just servicing ur 125 your self.

Concerning paddock stands like yours with rubber coated metal supports. Always check the rubber before lifting the bike. I scratched my swingarm just this weekend because mine had split open... 😭

My top tip for new riders always keep your eyes on the road and keep to the speed limit. always be aware the closer you get to the top speed of your bike the harder it is to stop it and the worse it is if you can't stop.. I learnt most of that the hard way and you don't want that.

And while the thinking distance stays the same, the breaking distance goes up in proportion to the square of your speed so excessive speed really does make stopping harder as you say and may not end well.

I used Leather Conditioner on my seat, which it is made for, amongst other things, which I dry wiped off afterwards. Turns out, it still leaves a very, very slippery film on the seat, which I was sliding around on, during a club ride, 170km later. Yeah, not doing that again.

Hi Spicy110, I was wondering if you can help me with a riding question. I've relatively new with 2 years under my belt now and 8000 miles or so. My issue is that sometimes when shifting from 1->2 or 2->1 I would hit N. I am not coming to a complete stop and still moving. Everything I shift again from N to 1 or 2 while moving I get a loud clunk from the transmission. How can I prevent that? Besides being for assertive on my shifting. How do I get save my tranny and shift forks, if/when that occurs?

Depends what is making it happen, a good click up or down should jump neutral. First things to do are check clutch cable adjustment, chain tension and gear shift pedal position. After that it's looking internally at shifter forks, but it is most likely one of the easy ones listed first.

Also don't buy a bike with an exhaust(Black Widow) that does not conform to UK construction and use regulations, they need BSAU markings or E markings.... Otherwise you can quite easily get a nice fine from the police....yes it'll pass an MOT but it won't be road legal without that stamp on there.

For anyone with an older bike that still has brake cables Don't ever buy cheap Chinese ones the nipple on the end of the cable have been known to come off under braking leaving you with zero brakes..(yes it happened to me once) Cheap parts aren't worth the risk.

The chain tension is always set with the rider sat on the bike with the rear suspension compressed as normal. Over tightening the chain will pull the output sprocket shaft bearing out of alignment, causing the selector fork for 4th gear (on 4, 5 & 6 speed gearboxes) to ride hard in its cog groove and burning it out eventually. The first symptom of this is that 4th gear jumps out into a false neutral, when on the power. Eventually the 4th gear just refuses to lock home and, in some cases, the selector fork breaks off into the gears causing a locked rear wheel, sphincter muscle failure and destroyed underwear. I've rebuild countless engines where this has happened, over the last 40 years. All because the owner wrongly set the chain tension with the bike on the stand with no rider on it.

I agree with you about the damage an over tightened chain can cause. However I have never seen chain free play stated as being measured with the rider sat on the bike? Every bike I've owned has had free play measured with the bike on it's stand. In the case of my recently acquired Vfr750, Honda state in the owners manual to adjust the chain with the bike on the centre stand. No mention of rider on board.
