Admittedly this is a very specific subject but coming from a 125cc single cylinder motorcycle to a 600cc Inline-four engine has some differences you may not realise. even compered to a 650cc v-twin. These are the most obvious ones that will help you get the most out the engine.

Great video Spicy, some important points made. 5th gear doing 30mph on my ZZR 600 would die, no efi, just a big hefty bike and a fluffy carb box. But, get in those higher rpms and she'll still keep up with the best of em! Love inline 4s for their smoothness though.

A lot of useful information here that I should have watched months ago. I am still finding that I am psyching myself out arriving at corners faster than my ability advises is wise and I freeze and go rigid and my ability to corner all but vanishes completely. Nearly hit a big ford pickup head on a couple of days ago in what would have been a game over moment. It’s just the same as I was 40 years ago! Must practice more and you really can’t let your concentration slip even for a moment especially on unknown roads. Must do better!

well said. I moved up to a 600 from a 125 last year. What an experience it is the first time you open up a "big" bike. The most important thing to do though is respect the bike, when you move on to the bigger bikes it will be capable of doing things you just will not be able to. As you said build up to it, slowly and gradually and you will be fine. Be sensible and show respect and most importantly enjoy the ride

I find everyone says the same thing "riding a bigger bike is so much easier than a 125" I find this not to be the case, or rather found this not to be the case, I'm very glad I had the instructor I did as she was the type of person where you will be riding that bike and you will pass your test (which is great coz I always throw the towel in early mid shit fit) but even still I never got used to riding that fzs600, just couldn't get on with it, i find these inline 4s (and triples) overly responsive and I don't like revving a bike I found 5-7,000 revs on that was like cruising and I'm used to changing up then, and I found changing gears by the time I get up a gear the revs have died so much its as if I have to find the biting point again, I miss gears, managed to stall it the lot, sod knows how I passed me a2 on that thing, riding a 400 single however, absolutely fine, no trouble at all, changing gears was smooth, the throttle isn't in a hurry to pull ur arms off, but if poked with a shitty stick it'll pick up with gusto, I love singles, so easy to ride, I find everything too dainty and responsive on 3s and 4s (twins are okay but I'd still choose a single)

just watched this again 2 years later.... i got a fzs 600 fazer last week. i been riding 125cc for 17 years. i cant emphasise enough how much you have to be aware in corners on a bigger bike. the fazer has close to 100bhp and a gentle twist can easy see you 20mph in a corner faster than you expected... i nearly washed out today on way home due to like 1mm too much throttle meaning i was like 15-20mph too quick for corner. i hit the noob reaction of braking mid corner. Thankfully i had the mindset to let go of brakes and just lean more with slight throttle to push me round... it was a close call but it just goes to show even people with experience can be easy pushed over the riders ability and caught off guard. thankfully i had the knowledge to get out of that situation and not target fixate and came away unhurt but another lesson learned!

It happens to us all, it's just learning from the last and moving on. Every now and then I might do something a bit silly recover it and be like well that was silly now wasn't it haha. The odd thing is you can't think that fast so your reactions are built it and it kinda all happens like wait what was that haha

@@spicy110 yea. soon as i came round corner i was shaking my head like well that was daft of me XD but yea it all happend so quick one min i was going round and bang i knew it was do or die time. was literally a split second of looking at speedo thinking fk thats bit fast then looked up an i moved from lane position 3 to position 1 i had a second to turn or eat tree. crazy how the brain does it all so quick. i diddnt have time to think what i was doing in that situation. it just happened.

I like what you said about learning how to ride fast before upgrading. I've been riding near 5 years now, 1 year on a 2 stroke 50, 2 years on a 125, and I've been riding my current bike, a VFR400 for about 15 monthes now, and I see it way too often when I go for ride out where people have just done their DAS and bought like a CBR600RR and I will go so much faster than them through the twisties and dispite that they will get to the next stop and say "I need something faster like a RC8" (genuine qoute by the way) even though they just got beat by a guy with half the HP as them. Rider skill is 10 times more important and I say this as someone who believes I'm not really that fast at all.

I think amending the title to how to ride a big/bigger bike. I just went from a 125cc to a 650 parallel twin. . Almost as much power probably about the same torque as yours, probably a bit lighter, so roughly the same performance. I just ride the same for the most part, less full throttle/red line moments though. Just take it easy and within minutes, as long as you're sensible, you get used to it.

Yep, they also red line at around the same RPM, 4 cylinder slightly higher by about 1k on these, super sports red line higher. Both are still very quick bikes for any new rider but easy to ride in normal road conditions.

I've just gone from a 500 parallel twin to a Hornet 600 and it's brought the excitement back to biking for me. It makes 100bhp with the exhaust I've got on it and more torque than the newest R6. For a 20 year old naked 600 i4 it's full of surprises

IsntThisAStupidName I wish. I have one. A healthy one makes 80-85 to the wheel. With an exhaust and proper jetting you get about 90.

No one said anything about WHP though. A delk adds 4whp and the bike makes 97 at the crank so it's safe to say that goes up to 100 with the exhaust

I flipping love riding my Diversion. I've had a couple of 'oh shit' moments when approaching corners but I've always managed to slow to a manageable speed for me to get round them 😂 Another thing that might be good to point out is a lot of people go from naked 125s to faired big bikes and some get a bit wary of the fact the nose cone always stays pointing forwards, even if the bars ain't 😂

6:03 EngineeringExplained did a video with a pretty decent explanation (called "When To Shift Gears For The Fastest Acceleration" if anyone want's to search for it). TL;DR In the vast majority of cases gearings are designed such that running to redline is what you want to do for max acceleration.

I can't remember if it was a yam or Kwak with a red line of about 16000 and a fella who bought one couldn't make out why ur wasn't taking off and was saying on a forum that even at 5000 revs it would barely pick up and would sometimes stall and as a long term owner said "5000 revs is barely off tick over" so that's a problem for a lot of people who go from a single to inline 4 or I suppose going single to twin.

Told you other month I went to look at a 600 cbr, don't even need front brake, just shut off throttle and a little of back brake its lick I've got a ships anchor on the back, but I agree they are fun and a lot easier to ride than 125 cc bikes

I'm able to get my 50cc geared bike to pull off on the clutch alone, even with it's low idle and low sprocket ratio. I believe it's a carburetted single cylinder. I need to give a step or two on flat but otherwise will get about 5 MPH without any problems. For some reason, as well, occasionally, when doing that, applying a tiny twist of throttle will make it slow down. The gears thing is definitely true, as well, because I have to shift up to fourth to get 30 MPH without the bike vibing to Hell and back. But then the fourth gear will get me up to 50MPH, whereas the other gears will get me barely anything. However, I must admit, that bike scares the fucking shit out of me, especially since I had a lowside because of the bike itself. The power is so inconsistent and the throttle will jump randomly at any speed or gear, which, when mid lean on a roundabout, wasn't good for the relationship between the ground and my knee. The handling is also fucking horrible because I will try to lean and sometimes it will, sometimes it will decide to countersteer in the direction I don't want it to. I can't wait until the end of the month, I will move up to an MT 125.

My 125 (has derbi gpr 125 4T engine) has peak power at 8250RPM (from spec sheet) and I usually have to stay around 8000-1000 rpm whilst accelerating. Very little power below 5k, so I wouldnt say what you say is true for every 125. But I know what you mean.

I think part of the point of the video was that while you don't *need* any more than a 125 for riding around the city, (assuming you stick to speed limits) it is actually a bit easier to ride a bigger bike somewhere in the 600-700 range, and it gives you all the options you need for when you are not going around the city but on your travels elsewhere. Even then, a 125 will get you wherever you wish to go, a bigger bike just does everything that bit better.
