Don't use trains in Sicily, especially the route Trapani-Palermo you will lose at least 6 hours of your life. For this route use the busses, it's a lot faster

Pisa. From pisa you can do a day trip to lucca, an amazing citadel city. Only 25 minutes on the train from pisa. Also for bikers, there is the piaggio/moto guzzi musesum near pisa.

I've been to Italy dozens of times, my advice is skip the cities and see the fabulous small towns and villages, concentrate on regional cuisine, rent a car but be mindful of "zona traffico limitato" in towns and totally agree with the wine.

Having been to Pisa, I would say that if you have a lot you want to do then that’s an easy skip. Pretty much all there is in Pisa is the leaning tower and once you’ve seen that for 10 minutes you’re done. I did have a beautiful day in the nearby town of Lucca. What a lovely place to spend a day. That’s where I’d spend my time between the two places.
