Jason Williams Because the Erat trade got George Mcphee fired. And their current gm, Brian Mclellan is one of the reasons why they were even able to win the cup. I think you misspoke about the Hawks trade. Hawks won in 2015 against the Lightning, so it wasn't 3 years removed... Also regarding the Danault trade, at the time I think he didn't fit into Joel Quenneville's coaching scheme. Q had that tendency with several young players where they wouldn't get a lot of quality playing time and the limited time they had weren't the most productive. Yes Danault turned into a very solid player, but at the time of the trade and with Anisimov and Toews on the roster there wasn't going to be a way for him to crack the top of the lineup. Little did we know the changes the Hawks would make in trading Anisimov as well as other moves..

As a Leafs fan, and more importantly a huge Nazem Kadri fan, owning a signed London Knights jersey, a signed Leafs jersey and a signed rookie card, the Toronto Maple Leafs traded Nazem Kadri for Tyson Barrie and Alex Kerfoot; more accurately, Tyson Barrie, Alexander Kerfoot and a 2020 sixth-round draft pick from the Colorado Avalanche in exchange for centre Nazem Kadri, defenceman Calle Rosen and Toronto’s 2020 third-round pick. This has not boded well for the Leafs, but has for Kadri fans, as he has a chance at a Stanley Cup ring for the next 1/2 decade or so.

Pens fans rake us Caps fans over the coals for the Filip Forsberg trade, but I call their bluff, cause the Pens also made a similar blunder years before we did. Did you know Markus Naslund actually began his career in Pittsburgh, and he used to play on the same line as Super Mario himself? Apparently, Naslund wasn't too happy in Pittsburgh, and that may be why his career started off pretty sluggish, so he was shipped to Vancouver in exchange for Alek Stojanov, who flamed out pretty quickly. I'm guessing this is why a certain bunch of Yinzers are so adamant about the Canucks giving them Elias Pettersson (a fellow Swede like Naslund) as "compensation" for fleecing them. I mean, when a player named Pettersson was traded to them, Yinzers on Twitter were celebrating their "heist of the century", thinking it was Elias when it was actually Marcus Petterson, a defenseman (and no, Elias and Marcus are not related), coming their way.

Carter was traded the day before the 2011 Draft so the bluejackets knowingly trade #8 overall. Then Couturier fell in the draft to #8 for the Flyers.

The Maple Leafs trading a first round pick in 1991 for Tom Kurvers. Then watching the NJ Devils use that pick to draft Scott Niedermeyer.

Trades are more complicated than you make it out to be. Take Panarin for Saad. Everyone said that Chicago lost that trade, Panarin is elite players and Saad is just great. 2 years later Panarin left Bluejackets (which he would have done in Chicago as well since both teams didn't have enough space in salary cap). So sometimes you need to make bad deals.

The sad thing is you could make an entire vid full of let’s trades that backfired horribly

Islanders, if you exclude pretty much every move Mike Milbury made, I would have to say trading 1st and 2nd round picks and Matt Moulson for Thomas Vanek only to dump Vanek later that same year for nothing.

As a maple leafs fan Raycroft for rask was probably the biggest trade that backfired :/
