Didn’t go thru Army bootcamp, went thru Navy bootcamp. Best tip I can give anyone is do not think about how much time you have in or have left.. don’t look forward to next day or week, just look forward to your chow, when you get up and march to the galley for breakfast, just think about gettin to lunch after that. It’ll make things feel much quicker, if you sit there and count the hours and days you will feel like a day is an eternity.

I hate barracks bullies. We had a barracks bully. The assistant DI knew and told us that if there was a fight, he would let it happen. But at the end we had to shake hands or he would call the MP's. The bully finally crossed me. I was tall and on the fluffier side, compared to the rest of the platoon, my nice guy attitude and appearance made me appear soft. The DI heard the commotion and came to investigate. He made the platoon move the bunks and had us square off right there. No hits to the face. We grappled for a minute before I was on top and jabbing my thumb into his ribs while he was pinned, left him bruises to remember. He tapped out. In the end he refused to shake hands until the DI reminded him of the MP's. He never bullied anyone again. We were both punished and had to clean the laundry room.

The five worst, or, FIVE THOUSAND worst things about Basic Training never change: APPREHENSION. Know this: United States Army Drill Sergeants, by and large, ABSOLUTELY WANT YOU TO SUCCEED. Quick story... During BRM (basic rifle marksmanship) at Ft. Benning (1989), I was killing it. THEN, the 25 meter target came up. I didn't see it. My Company Commander, CPT Scott E. Hampton (I'll never forget him), actually threw a rock at the 25 meter target. It was the difference between marksman and sharpshooter. That night, Staff Sergeant Leach called me to the front of the Barracks. "Private? You owe the Captain 100 push ups!! Now beat your face!!"

The absolute WORST #1 thing at basic was the copious amounts of waiting. Waiting for chow, waiting for range time, waiting to get your gear, waiting to get on the bus, waiting to get to go to bed in "hydration formation" waiting to get ready and go on your morning ruck marches, PT, waiting on NCOs and the commander for inspections. The absolute worst thing for me personally.

@@osbaldohernandez7943 no we can only leave for morning temp checks and if we gotta wash clothes. Now keep in mind that im still in reception/processing (idk different people call it different things, which if i remember correctly we will be in for 30 days after arriving to fort benning). Just because my online classes are shittier versions of my offline classes? That doesn't make any sense. Also, why are you so keen on trying to instill the idea that "i'll never get a job" and "my classes are a waste of time" to make me feel bad? I love my classes and the subject i'm pursuing, and a snarky remark from some nobody in the internet won't dissuade me. You sound like someone who should try and get a passion. My 5 worst things were ( I was in 96)- - First day was confused chaos. Wasn't mysteriously enjoyable. It was just a bunch of headless chickens bumping into eachother wondering wtf we got ourselves into. - Ocassionally, the drill sgts. would dq someone in a pt test for no reason. Just more mind games. The key is to not take them personal though. - being so starved for sleep. - dealing with idiots in your platoon ( every platoon has them) -missing home and wondering what great thing you're missing out on ( 99% of the time you aren't missing much, so might as well make the best of it while you start with your own adult life)

Not enough time to eat, not enough time to sleep, getting punished for something you didn't do - I'll stick to my personal top three (Navy version) - worst things about basic training. Things may have changed in the last 30+ years but never got eight hours of sleep in my day (not close..). Seems they made it a point to keep you perpetually exhausted due to lack of sleep (walking fire/guard watches in the middle of the night was especially annoying..). Not being able to take a crap for a week (partly/mostly because their are no such thing as walls around crappers at basic) a close 4th.. Getting sick is another pitfall that almost killed a squad mate and had to be rushed to med. squad in the middle of the night. I got ill as well but at the end of basic but not nearly as bad as others. One thing I got from basic was memories to last a lifetime..

A racecar it was too easy dude... I’m a mechanic. Went thru fort Jackson for basic and Lee for AIT... in fort Hood now. It’s a lot easier than I expected... Covid hit while I was halfway thru basic. That was the hardest part... I got in worse physical shape being in training... lost a lot of muscle and got skinny. Do sit ups and push ups on ur own before going and when you have free time in basic. TRADOC (training) is all a mental endurance game... just remember it all ends.. and that the actual army is NOTHING like training. I’m lovin the active army life right now. 7CallmeKing7 good luck. don't forget to not only lose weight but also to make sure you fit the tape test requirements to fall back on. Obviously you need to have your waist down as much as possible, but also try to make sure your neck is as big as you can get it.

One of the things that took me a while to get deprogrammed, similar to the battle buddy. It took me weeks to stop cupping my hands when I walked. It looked like I was always at the position of a tent on for almost a month. I still catch myself every once in a while.

I wish you were around (and we had KZbin) when I turned 18 fifty years ago. I might have put off college and got a badly-needed dose of maturity. Your presentations probably prevent a lot of unpleasant surprises - both for the Army (and armed forces as a whole for that matter) and for the person who is looking at enlisting. I eventually ended up in a position where I made hiring decisions. I understand Civil Service gives ten points extra for military service. I've hired vets and non-vets, and I can tell you that the edge isn't worth ten points. It's worth more like twenty - AT LEAST. Thank you for your decision to serve - and to present the information you do. You're doing a whole lot of folks a whole lot of good.

Went through infantry osut from April 2021 to September 2021. If you are wanting to go in the infantry this applies to you best advice I can give is this. Count by the sundays. Think as if every week we’re just one long day. Usually sundays you will get 30 minutes phone time and then later on in the cycle you get passes on sand hill. Where you can go to the px and Rex center and just chill. Write your family and friends often use your personal time ( 1 hour at the time) to write family and get your stuff in your wall locker and rack squared away. Also try to make a morning routine wake up before everyone else and clean yourself up shave and brush your teeth. You will get time to shower at the end of the night during that one hour personal time and after pt in the mornings. Also remember use track time later in the cycle. Later in the cycle they usually give you time on free time on saturdays around the company. Use that time to hit the track because you have to pass a 5 mile run in 45 minutes at the end of your cycle. It’s pretty easy unless you don’t apply yourself. If your overweight use your personal time to workout or you will be recycled.

Top 3 things that sucked when I went through USAF basic. 1) The sitting around in various offices week after week waiting to get some form or another stamped or signed. (half of basic was marching around base, doing in processing) 2) The miniscule amount of time to stuff whatever food you could in your mush before the TI announced it was time to leave the dfac. (I actually lost 10lbs in 8 weeks) and 3) the flight being constantly held up from doing something or going somewhere because the TI was busy berating the same couple of habitual screwups that couldn't seem to understand the simplest of instructions.....Every BMT class has one or two. Otherwise things were a breeze. No battle buddy stuff, paid another recruit to iron all my laundry and fold my t-shirts and underwear leaving me to just have to place-n-space as they say. Hell, got assigned guard duty the day of our final 1.5 mile timed qualifying run. Sgt. Called me into his office later that afternoon to tell me what I ran it in, which he put down as 11 minutes flat. I remember saying " it felt like I ran it a bit faster than that". I actually got a small chuckle from him. I think he barely knew my name because he only directly spoke to me once in the 2months to warn me to keep my flip flops on after leaving the shower until I put on my boots or went to bed for the evening, which by the way, 8 hrs allotted for sleep and 8 of sleep are two very different things...especially that first week. Regular bowel movements is no longer a thing that first week. Lol.

The worst part of Basic for me was simply waking up in the morning. Lights on was at 0430, but a lot of people started moving around at 0400 and some even earlier. When you are all cozy under a warm blanket in an air conditioned barracks you just don't want to get up. :( Oh, and when hand to hand combat training fell on a rainy day, that sucked too.

In Navy boot camp we did not get 8 hours of sleep a night one time, closer to 5 or 6 hours and a couple nights we did not get to sleep at all, but we got to sit in chairs more often and our food was apparently marginally less rotten. Gotta take the good with the bad.

david maxwell Drill sergeants only care about the end result. They are pretty much breaking you down and rebuilding to what they want you to be. They will NOT fail you if you can’t do push-ups or sit-ups. They’ll push you to your very limit. And whether you’re out of shape or in shape, you go on your ship date My advice: “NEVER QUIT”

not sure about Army Basic, but talking to a ton of people that went through MCRD San Diego and the worst thing about it, especially if you go during the peak summer season is waiting in the hot sun at the rifle range during 2nd phase. Unless they expanded the rifle range to handle more then one large platoon at a time, if there were more then about 80 people per platoon in a company, only one platoon could use the rifle range at once, which meant if you were one of those unlucky platoons to be 3rd or 4th in line to go on the rifle range, you could be sitting in the hot sun for up to 8 hours from early morning after breakfast to mid afternoon to get your turn on the rifle range, and there is no talking, you just gotta sit there and wait, taking breaks to refill your canteen and use the head, and you will have to do this for a full week. A ton of people I have talked with said that was worse then 1st phase, worse then the gas chamber, worse then even The Crucible.
