These OS's are a good example of how the RPi 4 is significantly more powerful than the previous RPi models. I appreciate how the Raspberry Pi foundation is taking its time to deliver hardware and software that's stable. They know their SBC's quite well, so they can watch the advancement of the tech, and take advantage of it at the right time/price point. Hope I can get my hands on a RPi 4 soon, it seems every time I go to order a 4GB, they're (still) out of stock. Thanks for another great video Chris.

Two additional notes: 1. Ubuntu for the Pi 4 is now available. Both 32 and 64 bit versions are available. Another KZbinr, ETA Prime, has recently released a video covering this. 2. The release of 64 bit Raspbian may seem unexciting but let me theorize why this could be a great thing going forward. Without getting super technical, it is worth mentioning that 32 bit operating systems can only work with about 3 gigabytes of RAM. But the Pi 4 has up to 4GB so to make all of the RAM accessible in 32 bit Raspbian Buster a workaround had to be implemented. That workaround only gets you a max of 4GB. The 64 bit operating system can address much, much more RAM than that so my theory is that with the 4GB memory barrier removed we may see future Pi 4 models (4B+ perhaps) with more than 4 GB of RAM. Much more. Raspberry Pi officials have stated affordable memory chips greater than 4GB could not be sourced and keep the Pi cost where it is currently so they stopped at 4GB. But, I would be happy to pay up to $100 for an 8GB Pi 4.
@ExplainingComputers5 жыл бұрын
Useful notes. Thanks for sharing here.
@markconger80495 жыл бұрын
Oh, one more note about RAM in the Pi 4, I think I read where the Broadcom Sytem on a Chip (SoC) which houses the processor cores, video core, GPIO, PCIe, and such can handle up to 16GB of RAM. The 64-bit operating system can address much more so this is a SoC limitation, but still, 16GB is jaw dropping in the Pi world. Maybe we’ll see it. Who knows.

So today thanks to you, I ordered the RPi 4B, Ice cooler, etc. to add to my collection of SBC's, and I look forward to trying these OS alternatives. But I DID NOT order the blue LED version of the cooler. There should be an international law against blue LED's, which are known to interfere with sleep, and probably tortures pets. Amber should be the gold standard. So I ordered the multi-color RGB fan-version, complete with a colorful case option, but I would have ordered amber if I had found it. With any luck at all, there will be software control of the RGB color choices. In any case, there should always be a way to shut off the LEDs since they provide little if any value for their power consumption. www.ebay.com/itm/52Pi-V2-0-RGB-ICE-Tower-CPU-Cooling-Fan-5-Layer-Acrylic-Case-for-Raspberry-Pi-4B/223680248136?ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT&var=522401408281&_trksid=p2060353.m2749.l2649

I've used both OMV and LibreELEC in the past. I should mention OctoPrint for those who have a 3D Printer. I bought a Monoprice Maker Select Plus back in April, which doesn't have Wi-Fi connectivity, and I keep it in my hobby room where I build plastic models as well as do other things. Hooking it up to a RPi and installing OctoPrint changes that. It allows you to manage and monitor prints over a network through a web UI, and also an app. Although I believe there is a plugin to print from anywhere (I've just not tried it). For those who use AstroPrint--there's a plugin for that, too.
@artbecker56185 жыл бұрын
OctoPrint is interesting, as it not only controls your printer, but you can't even turn the printer on and off using the switch, if you are running it. The slight downside is that it is written in Python 2.

Another great video Christopher. I again learned a lot. I never tried DietPi. And I didn't know it was possible to run Raspbian in arm64. I'll have to try that. Great info. I made a video about installing Mate on Ubuntu 19.10 server on the Raspberry Pi 4. There are some issues, but it does run well. HDMI sound doesn't work right yet, and for me 4GB disables USB. So I've got to limit to 3074MB. Still ok for a Raspberry Pi. The biggest advantage of Ubuntu 19.10 is that it uses mainline kernel 5.3 instead of the Raspberry kernel, and it has the latest software versions. And it's faster for my tasks than Debian Buster. Because of its limitations it doesn't yet fit in this list. But it is great to see this happening for the Raspberry. I hope they'll fix the issues soon. I must say I like the RK3399's so much more than the RPi4 for so many reasons. I also had a lot of problems with my capture device. For terminal I had to use my hdmi splitter. But for desktop use that gave an empty black display. So then I had to run it thru the capture device, but it only worked with 4k resolution. So I had to enlarge everything. So I know what you menth with having to reboot a lot for your capture device :) Have a great evening, greetings.

Hi Chris, thanks for your excellent work. I've played around DietPi for a few days now, It seems to be excellent for tinkering about, which is how a lot of us learn things - particularly as you get over 50 ! Perhaps a video dedicated to DietPi would be well received ? I'm sure most Raspberry Pi's have been purchased as a learning tool/Linux play thing. Thanks again

excellent video as usual, Chris! Just recently moved my Gaming PC over to Linux. It's amazing how many of these distros exist for ARM and how good the support is now. I thought of a *great* video topic for you on the topic of Linux, because many are being introduced to it through SBCs and some of them want to replace their Windows Machines: Linux Gaming, and setting up Vulkan/DXVK for WINE. Really old cards don't support it at all, really new ones just work, but there's a span of time in the middle for both AMD and Nvidia where one has to manually configure it. It'd be a good way to explain chip names, grub2, and how to install services (if you decide to handle fan speeds on your own, which I had to do). I Might even record it later when I redo this install onto new drives, just so someone else with a similar video card doesn't get massively confused and break things. Also, Props to Zorin for having a recovery enviroment....

I guess the youtube playback in raspbian 64 bit is the same as in Manjaro. No hardware support yet. I agree that youtube is ok, watched several hours of youtube content and is ok enough but not good enough if for example you have a stockmarket ticket scrolling in the video. Then you will definitely see the effects of the dropped frames. Also tested libreelec. That all works fine except it support only up to the DTS sound format. I remember reading the specs at the launch of the pi4 that it could support the lossless formats TrueHD and DTS Master HD-MA. I am still hopeful that the hardware support will improve in time so above issues will no longer exist. Maybe i am wrong. If so, please let me know.

@ExplainingComputers5 жыл бұрын
I had it in my hand only yesterday (because it lives on top of so many other things!). I do still intend to do the speed control video before the end of 2019. Thanks for the prompt. :)

@@ExplainingComputersI bet there are a fair few regulars who cannot wait to see that. Hopefully that would be motivation enough to try teaming up an NRF24L01 radio with a Pi for remote control.

The Pi 4 now supports network booting so if you have a desire to learn about that it may save you some time imaging multiple SD cards. You can network boot from a PC or even another Pi.

Dietpi is an awesome OS. I've used it for several things over the past couple years (CLI only). It has so many tutorials on anything you want to build. I've personally used it as an OpenVPN server, TOR access point, rsyslog, and even a honeypot decoy. All things considered I prefer Dietpi over Raspbian and even Armbian. This is the first review I've seen on the desktop though which I haven't tried yet so I'll give it a go. Thanks for the great video as always!!

The 64bit version of Raspbian is actually 64bit kernel with 32bit userland, which is not fully leverage the advantages of 64bit architecture. There is unofficial ubuntu server 64bit image for Rpi4, can you try on that?

At this stage I think you should put up a full length video on playing with and configuring the diet pi os just to show how far you can take it .thanks professor Chris

I found out that Parrot OS now has an experimental version for Raspberry Pi (so does Kali which I think Parrot is competing with). I haven't tired it and I'm not sure if you've tired it yet but I am interested. I'm not sure how well it runs at this time but Parrot is my favorite distro for my desktop and laptop (which I always duel boot with Peppermint OS since Peppermint doesn't require much system resources).

Kali certainly works. I shot a Kali Linux segment for the video, but decided against including it.

Good to see Manjaro on the Pi4, if the Pi4 is really going to have a stab at ‘thin-client’ it will be a good OS to have. Nice overview of what else is available as well, although hardware acceleration seems to be a continuing bane that will put a lot off. Since Pi2 I’ve always been disappointed when it comes to video with Pi. There’s seems something of a conflict with Raspberry Foundation, you have the educational remit which is all genuine and valid as far as I’m concerned, then the fact they shift tons of Zeros to industry (and I guess now also Model A+) and then you have the sort of ‘enthusiast’ model which is currently the Pi4. But its implementation seemed rushed, I don’t think taking people by surprise with a product launch is a very good way of going about things- it seemed chucked out there with little support. It feels like it was a bit knee-jerk in a perceived response to some competition but was faulted because of that. The USB-C thing is the most annoying to me as it introduces another half-baked USB-C implementation to what is already a bit of a mess anyway (USB3.3/3.1.1/3.2.1… is that right?) and is likely to be there for a long while until they redesign. No M.2 is just behind the curve given the prices now, as is no USB boot. And they say it would make a good thin client. Things like micro-HDMI and heat seem much less of an issue as they are easily resolved. Great video as always.

Thanks for this nice video Christopher. I'm new in the world off Single Board Computer. I have some experiences with Arduino. So I have some questions. Do you have experiences with OktoPi, a distribution with OktoPrint included. And then a stupid question, for the GPIOs on the RPI and other SBC is there a Microprocessor like an Arduino behind and are there 8, 16 or 32 bit like SM32 or ESP32. Thanks if anybody answer the question.
@ExplainingComputers5 жыл бұрын
I've not used OctoPi. There is no processor "behind" the GPIO -- just the SBC's main SoC.

I would be curious how well the Pi4 runs a Minecraft Server, esp. if the 64 bit version is faster even with only 4GB Ram. Minecraft runs on Java 32 or 64 bit. I like to run Minecraft with the Lotr-mod (Lord of the Rings). It's super awesome.

Do any of these work with Redshift or f.lux? I'm a night person and the lack of blue light blocking is preventing me from switching to the Pi4 full time. If someone can help me I would really appreciate it!

Oh no, with Raspbian 64 bit coming out my 32 bit Thinkpad-41's usability could be coming to a close. I use Raspbian Desktop 32 bit for it now but I suspect support for 32 bit will be discontinued at some point. I guess I'll have to look into buy a new 64 bit laptop. Thanks EC for the videos showing the trends in computing. I find them useful and have helped extending the life of my Thinkpad.

I doubt that they will scrap 32 bit Raspbian, not least as the Pi Zero (and also all Pi 1 and Pi 2 models) are all 2 bit.
