I bought a 1996 regular cab 5sp, 4x4 XE off the dealer lot for 12k brand new. Thing still runs like a top and has the original clutch and exhaust system. The odometer/speedometer both work intermittently now but I don't ever plan on selling it so doesn't really matter. The only thing I would've changed would have been to get the extended cab over the regular cab, but other than that this truck has been awesome. They are still pretty affordable if you can find an original owner looking to sell you have a solid truck that will last a long time with little to no maintenance. I think a lot of people look to Toyota's and completely overlook how dependable these trucks are.

My dad had this truck(1990) in white in the late 90s to early 2000s. I loved that truck and called it the white monster because it was a bit rusty. I drove it in high school and took it deer hunting off road. Road tripped to New York from Ohio. Got a kiss from a girl i had a crush on. Lots of memories. Died ar 330k miles. It liked to blow tie rods. The radio wasn't great but worked but you didn't need much when you were listening to Dire Straits on cassette. The jump seats were nice in a pinch, we even had four of us in there which was me and two teenage brothers and our dad, drive two and half hours on a small road trip. The engine sound really takes me back. The tires also sucked but it did okay in the snow when you went out, locked the hubs manually, and switched to 4 low. My dad was also a part time fire and ems guy so when the sirens went off, my dad literally peeled out and id hear him red line until out of ear shot and me being a hugh school kid, was running it hot all the time doing fish tails. We hauled rocks, mulch, rototillers, camping gear, everything. No issue. Had a really high suspension too. The seats WERE verh comfortable. If you're looking at this truck and seeing if it sucks, it doesn't. Its awesome and after my kids are gone, will get this truck. You'll just love this truck.

YES. I have three. ('86 V6 King Cab, '96 4cyl, and one '94 automatic, std cab. At 6' tall, I am comfortable with a bench seat, but when I changed it to bucket seats... I am not comfortable, can't lean back. The automatic has terrible gas mileage, 15 city /21 hwy. YOU should talk of miles per gallon, not cost $ of travel. I have slept in the bed on LONG trips of 1800 miles (air mattress). I never drive 80mph. Just wait until you have to change a starter motor, Oxygen sensor, find the timing marks in your driveway. Door lock won't open at all, rainwater won't drain out, running light sockets rust-up solid. Remove the gas tank for a fuel pump. I've been there, my friend.

I have a '97 5 speed 4x4. Clean with 90,000 miles. Cheap, easy to maintain. Very boring. Great backup vehicle and snow truck. I use fluid film on the frame and underneath every year. And i only get 20-22 mpg because I'm at 3,000 rpm at 60mph. More modern cars/trucks get better than that with a more powerful engine. The best thing about this truck, simple and reliable.

I have a 1997D 21 with 165,000 miles on it four-speed four-cylinder I’ve had it for five years and the only thing I’ve done besides put front brakes on it and change the oil as I put a new radiator in which cost me $46. I found one exactly like it for sale with even less mileage that had a blown engine and I’m planning on putting a new crate engine in it at some point, I am 6 foot one and weigh 300 pounds and it’s so comfortable… But I can tell you it’s not a highway to cruiser at speeds higher than 55 or 60 it’s not like a sports car… I would consider it a run around car in town I get 16 mpg in the city and 24 on the highway so it’s not really great on gas but my insurance full coverage is $37 a month and I have almost no maintenance costs. I have a ladder rack which I used to carry 16 foot pieces of lumber and I just can’t find the words to say how much I love this track❤️

@@curtfox91... just the 4 cylinder 4x4. There is literally zero transfer case gears available. The v6 has everything, and no where near the availability of Toyota. Sad because the ka is so awesome. I've read all the forms and called all the parts places. The spline is different. I just rebuilt my engine on my 4x4 5 speed ka. It's almost mint. Just wish I didn't have to try as hard to get parts for 4x4 when mine break or wear.

@@grantog123 your talking about the 4x4s and V6 models yeah not sure about those. But the ones with Ka24 engines are the ones that has the most support.

Please quit telling people to buy these trucks, I like not having to pay a hype tax. This kind of stuff gets a bunch of kids who think hoonigan is cool and drifting requires crashing snapping up anything useable.
