I had the same year hardbody with a manual transmission and the 4 cylinder, 8 spark plugs engine. No A/C, no power locks or windows but was a solid mini truck. I had to sell it back in 2005 when I moved out of state but I sold to my friend's dad who still has to this day and it's still running strong 😁

Back in the day certain brands that aren't very reliable today had a reputation for being some of the strongest at the time. I do like Nissan quite a lot and I want to turn one of their cubes electric.....give it a whole new lease on life because those transmissions you know are just junk.... I want to give it a better drive train and prove that nissan and others can be revived and saved by going electric. Plus i just want a cheep cute and reliable car that wont leave me stranded because of the dumb cvt

How many miles on it? My family has a 8 sparkplug 2.3 Ford Ranger with about 600k miles. Its a 1993 so its pretty basic. The engines been good but the transmissions had the clutch replaced and some minor work

I don't know the current mileage but the last time I spoke to my friend, his dad just uses the truck if he needs to haul stuff. His dad is in his mid 70's and driving a truck with a manual transmission and no power steering gets challenging for him so he only drives it when he needs to.

I had an 82 toyo longbox 4 speed, am/fm radio, vinyl seats, bulletproof 22R 4 cylinder. Wish I still had it, stone simple, reliable and not hard to fix. Unfortunately Minnesota winters were unkind to body and frame. It dissolved.

My mother had one of those in the 80s. Got into a head on collision when the guy in the other lane pulled over and hit her at speed. She lived through the wreck, needing a new knee and hip replacement, but she survived, due to the construction of the truck! I will ever be thankful for Nissan making it as tough as it was!

I have a 2000 Nissan frontier. I bought it for $500 and replaced the timing chain with my father. Love it. It has never let me down in the 4 years I've had it.

The D22 frontier is basically an updated of the basic Datsun truck. Its bigger and wider but it still has the same Datsun DNA, particularly the 4cyl ones. The KA24DE Frontier engine can trace its roots to the L series engines that first appeared in Datsun 521 trucks in 1969!

@@twoeightythreez Yep. I once rebuilt the L20B and L28 in my Datsun 620 and Z car. When it came time to do my 1987 D21 with the Z24i, I found that everything below the 8-plug head was L-series all.the way. Even the cam drive is the same. The hardbody even sounds and drives much like a Datsun with a little more torque. And in turn, all that DNA came from Prince Motors when Nissan bought them out, and Prince actually licensed it from Benz. So my truck actually has Mercedes genes, oddly enough. And now, the new Nissan 9 speed is licensed from Mercedes too.

Yea no doubt, I have the 88 toyota 22re 4x4 and love it its extremely reliable and easy to work on, took it to the beach and flipped it on a washout shore and just flipped over and it drove out fine 🤦‍♂️🤣

Yeah I had an 86 for a while. It was great when it ran right but some previous owner messed around with the engine and sometimes it would sputter and die. I tried so many things to fix it, but I never got it running right so I had to sell it.

I am 82 and have owned many,many vehicles of all brands. The most reliable one was a 94 Ford 4 cylinder with manual transmission, I sold it to a friend with 367,000 miles. Original clutch.

As Colorado native, no Colorado doesn't use salt on roads , use sand instead. and deicer that has no salt agents. It's why this 36 year old vehicle frame is still pristine.

bought a 1985 nissan 720 pickup last year for 1,000. Its a 3 speed with only 80k, I got it from some old man who sold it because and I quote " i got too many cars man". Ditched the old carb because it had problems like scotty described and put a weber on there, its been a fun and reliable truck to me so far.

I miss my family's 1989 Nissan Pick up. It wasn't 4x4 but the truck survived me, three older siblings and dad. Engine overheated but was rebuilt and I continue to drive it until I finally got my '06 Frontier. Still nothing replaces this particular truck line.

I have the 1994 Nissan D-21 of this truck. Everything works great, A/c, heater, everything. Bought it from my neighbor for only $1,100. He's right, It's also the best truck I have every owned. Love also the 5 speed standard. Great gas mileage too, 26 to 28 highway. Even though I have the 4 cylinder, it climbs mountains at 80 mph as if the mountains are not even there. Great for hauling too! It's rated to carry up to 2,000 lbs. I have often hauled 1,500 lbs, in it.

I have an 88' Pathy with the V6 VG30i, 260k miles on it, runs smooth as butter. Amazing 4wd system, that thing will crawl all over the place in 4 low. Been damn good to me. I always wanted one I was in high school from 89-92 so they were new back then. Recently I did trade a van for a 96 extended cab automatic 4 cylinder hardbody. It had a intake leak so I changed that out and then had a mass airflow sensor that needed to be replaced. Got everything situated and the truck was perfect. Drove it a year or two and ended up in a three car pile up. I was rear ended sitting behind a buss taking my daughter to school. The truck was totaled my daughter put her knee through the dash and my head broke the back window out. We luckily were not hurt. Lost the truck

Had a red 91Nissan hardbody for my first vehicle. 5 speed 4x4, my dad bought it used off the lot and had it for 9 years before giving it to me. Sold it still running great at 235.000 miles with very little problems it's entire life. Replaced timing belt once and a couple water pumps. Now 14 years later I have a 02 Nissan frontier sc 4x4. Had it 4 years now and it's been another great truck. Replaced timing belt and water pump just as a precaution when I got it. Love this truck and to me this 2002 nissan is the last of the best Nissan trucks made. I definitely think Nissan went down hill after 02-04ish.

@Russ Sabourin It was a long time ago when I had to change that water pump, about 15 years ago, but I'm fairly certain it was a timing belt. The truck had the vg 3.0 V6 engine. I'm thinking the 4cyl's had timing chains but the V6's had a timing belt around 91-93. I specifically remember having a heck of a time getting it timed when I put it back together. For some reason the crank cog wasnt marked on mine like the top two cogs were, then I didnt expect the cogs to move when I pulled the belt off (and ofcourse they did) I was 18 and doing that belt and water pump job sticks out in my mind. The dang water pump is behind everything on the front of the V6 including the timing belt.

@Russ Sabourin The VG30 always had a belt. You can swap the pulleys with ones off a VG33, they changed the design of the teeth and the belt goes about 20k longer.

That's what I like about my 96' Ford Ranger, also with Historic tags, 3L. V-6- it has old-school throttle body injection, two point inj. on a huge throttle tube. Nothing finicky to gum it up. The truck sat most of 3 years, and instead of dumping the fuel tank like I should have, I just topped it up. No problems. No problems with the truck at all, except squirrels wintering over and chewing up wires.

I just bought a '95 Hardbody here in the PNW that spent most of it's life in central Florida. No rust 😁 There are still a LOT of these trucks in the PNW as while we do have wet winters and some areas do get snow, we don't use salt here. I almost always see one when I'm driving around.

In 1986 you could buy an f150 with a 4.9 (300c.i.) inline 6cyl (120hp, 255tq). That super cab was a better truck for similar money. The Nissan hard body was a great truck, but it didn't get much better fuel economy. These trucks ran forever because they were more simple than today. The only enemy was rust.

OMG! My father had one of these just like this with a standard transmission! The rear seats fold out of the wall. There was nothing that wasn't solid on this truck except that they would rust badly in northern climates. I remember the rear bumper fell off when he went to trade it in. I think it was six years old at that point.

I had a '92 4WD automatic I bought in '96 and drove it for 10 years. It was an amazing truck and never let me down. The only issue I had was a vibration from the drive train at 50+ MPH that couldn't be fixed! New driveshaft, steady bearing, tires, the works.

Scotty is 100% right on that at 1:20. Back in the late 70s/early 80s Dodge/Chrysler/Plymouth had this electronic carburetor that was supposed to improve fuel economy but it was so unreliable that the majority of the time your car wouldn't run right or even run at all. Most of them were replaced by conventional carburetors. Cost Chrysler millions in warranty repairs. It was their equivalent of Cadillac's disastrous 8-6-4 engine.

The only truck I ever owned was a 1987 Nissan Hardbody with a manual trans, Snugtop with carpet kit, mag wheels and no AC. I bought it slightly used in 88'. Best vehicle I ever owned. Had over 200K miles before I blew the engine. It had a recurring oil leak from years of neglect and I underestimated how much oil was in there. Rebuilt the engine and all was good. Got a new car (93' Jeep Grand Cherokee, first year). I stored my Nissan at a friend's house. He was driving it without my permission and totaled it in 97'.

They're not as simple but it could be argued that newer Japanese vehicles beat older Japanese vehicles. Either way, it doesn't really matter, Japanese cars are a cut above the rest when it comes to reliability, longevity and economy. I've had VW's, Mercedes, GM's and even a Ford. I'm on my third Mazda now and I'm a Japanese car convert.

I had a brand new 85 D720 I traded for a 2WD 4cyl 86.5 Hardbody when they came out. Drove it for 5 years and only had to change the oil and filter. 2 years ago I was feeling nostalgic and bought a 97 4x4 4 cyl 5 speed. Truck is perfect and reliable. Only has 65,000 miles, so it will outlast me.

Scotty I work on new cars for a living I install aftermarket accessories on new vehicles It’s amazing how cheap these new cars have gotten I worked on a new bronco yesterday not the sport the full-size big Ben bronco it has a plastic transmission pan with nothing to protect it under the vehicle stupid if you ask me the interior of the vehicle is very cheap it’s amazing how cheap these cars are being made today and all the plastic in use in the engine bay And I’m still driving around in my 2003 Toyota Avalon with 230,000 miles with metal in my engine bay

Scotty, a pleasant surprise from Mr. Toyota! Nissan did so well for so long. .why did they merge with Renault? I have a 2wd z24 version with 423k. I've been in the engine, but the rest is untouched except for Amsoil. The old R12 system has quit. Rated at 106 hp but will haul anything that i load in it and will keep up on the freeway. Lower end is basically the L engine from the 1960s with the 8-plug head. I replaced the beat up seats with Integra and the melted steering wheel with a Pulsar for $5. I had the fast idle issue for years. Ignored it until it caused smog failure. Had to replace the little wax solenoid that controls the cold idle, then adjust the cam. Surprised you said not supposed to mess with it. It doesn't govern mixture. Just idle speed. Now it idles better than 25 years ago. You can feature my antique and even give it the drag strip test! These old nissans...did you see the million-mile Frontier from Chicago on you tube? I don't know how people say that's junk compared to Toyota. I'd call them peers. I also have a cheap 88 Sentra with 360k on orig engine that still purrs. One head gasket only failure. Late 80s and 90s seems like a golden age for Japanese stuff. Wish the plastic parts could take the CA sun better! But I like the simplicity. Fuel injection is the only tech on board, and it was inevitable as the carbs and vacuum lines necessary for smog had become impossibly complex and tough to maintain.

Loved the video. I always have adored this trucks to death because I have one. Have had it for 6 years and always drove her without any real big work done to it and she's never failed me until just a few days the transmission went out on me. But I love the D21's they were so well made and very tough always has gotten me out of bad situations and kept me safe always. 93 D21 Automatic 2.4L never wanna get rid of it.

That's what I like about the older vehicles they are much simpler and easier to work on. My modern day Mercedes sprinter van has so many sensors it'll make your head spin. I have already had the engine replaced and there are 3 sensors showing fault code. One of them prevents the cruise control. The sad thing is the van only has 12k on it and it was made last year.

I had one of those. I bought it new in Nov '86 and drove it for 15 years. I had a 4x4 long bed. Liked everything but the power. I could carry a lot of stuff in that long bed.

We had a 2wd 4 cylinder Nissan p/u from that same era. We put aggressive tires on it and were able to take it anywhere we wanted to go camping. The main drawback with it was that the engine was underpowered. It took forever to get up to highway speeds when it was loaded and towing anything very heavy was out of the question. Otherwise, it was a great truck. If we had gotten the six instead of the four, we might have kept it to the present.

As a Hardbody owner, I can tell you the issue with the throttle body. Once a part breaks on it (wax idle solenoid) you will not be able to find replacement parts. Nissan only supplies parts up to 20 years back, so that throttle body is obsolete. Wrecking yards used to be the place to go, but they are all picked clean now. A used, 30-year-old throttle body injector will sell for $300 to $600 on eBay - if you can find one. Why? Because nobody makes an aftermarket replacement either.

@@shanetyler9391 both had the throttle body, so both have that issue. The newer VG30e has its own problems, especially with ethanol-based fuel, because the small o-rings in the injectors will dissolve if the engine is not driven regularly. I've replaced all 6 injectors on my VG30e injectors 3 times since taking ownership of mine in 2010, and they are expensive to replace.

Fuel injection was more common than carburetors in 1986. I would have thought it had a carburetor also because of that big circular air filter on top of the engine.

I have an 1995 pathfinder with said v6 with almost 300k on it. The trick to get them to last so long is to keep up on the timing belt. Change them every 70k an she's going to run for along time. In my opinion I believe the 95 pathfinder and hardbody trucks were the last of a very reliable vehicle.

Nostalgia always warms the heart. I had (2) 84 Nissan 2.4 L 4cyl. Carb an Automatic that I drove and a 5 speed wreck (parts car). So easy to work on! It had 8 spark plugs intake and exhaust. The fuel pump was in back wheel well which you could change with a screwdriver and pliers. Ran great but in NJ it rusted out. If I got stuck in snow I would leave it in drive and get out and push.

As I'm certain you must know, Scotty, four-wheel drive vehicles, Jeeps (Wranglers), Land Rovers (a.k.a. Defenders), Hummers, the old FJ-40 Toyota Land Cruisers, and the long deceased International Harvester Scout, all can and do get stuck. These machines will all get stuck when owners do what so many of us love to do with them and drive them off-the-road (and totally off trails of any kind) to "places where no man (or woman) has ever been before." I got my first Land Rover, an 88" 2.25 liter petrol station wagon on 16 April 1964. I drove Land Rovers for the next 30 years. Since April 2012, I've been a Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Rubicon driver. I dearly love these true off-road machines. Every vehicle named above I dearly love. All of them certainly do get stuck!! Andy McKane, Maunaloa, Molokai, Hawaii.

Loved my 86.5, except it was the 4 cylinder. Manual trans, manual 4x4 selecter. Only issue I had was 5th gear let go around 150K, rebuilt it and it away I went. Lol. Wish I still had one.

I have a 1987 D21 two-wheel drive with the 2.4Z engine and currently have 463k+ miles on it. I have the same 15" chrome rims from a 4WD model so for years ran a larger diameter tires such that 1 mile only registered .9 on the odometer. Based on simple calculations, I'm sure i have over 500k miles on the truck. As Scotty indicates, it isn't a powerhouse and can't do what my dad's 1992 4.3L S10 can do but it's have been a very durable truck. One thing that Scotty didn't mention. The 2.4Z has a timing chain. The V6 uses a timing belt with intrusive vales (meaning if the timing belt breaks you can bend/break valves because they may hit the top of the cylinder) so even though the 2.4Z is wanting for power, I would prefer it over a V6 model.

Have the same year, engine, and rims on mine. About 423k. I run 215/65/15 tires and overall diameter is very close to the stock 14s. Double timing chain is stout. Not a lot of HP but enough torque to lug a full ton in the bed if you dare. Keeps up on freeway just fine. If you bring tire diameter down to stock it really helps the power on the 4 bangers

Colorado cars typically don't rust. They rarely use salt because the snow in the front rage is usually gone in a day or 2. Example: the temp in Denver right now is 43. I've seen people golf every month of the year.

My buddy still has his 88 and it runs perfectly. I liked it so much I had a 92 for a while until it got wrecked. Still love to ride in my buddys truck though.
