We own a 91 D21 4x4, standard cab with the KA. 183K and it's a phenomenal little truck. Everything we want that todays trucks no longer offer. It's a very basic and simple, reliable work truck. Has no factory AC or radio, crank windows, 4x4 with manual hubs, 5 speed and doesn't have a ton of tech gadgetry we don't want or need (like a tailgate that transforms into a desk😊). It's the best truck I've ever owned. I absolutely love it and if they still made them I would buy a new one without hesitation. Timing guides are a common problem but ours keeps a rattling on.

Speedo failed early almost all the time. Shocks are garbage, and doing the thermostat is no fun. The alternator through the wheel well isn't a struggle if you know how to twist it just right. My 1995 has 240.000km on it and I've been daily driving it for the last year. The most common issue on these trucks, at least from my experience and my buddies with these trucks, is a Timing Chain rattle! easy and quick to fix, since a few companies offer aftermarket tensioners that work way better. I have also had some starter motor issues and replaced it in December, but the new starter is already dying on me. I have rust issues with my truck, although not so much on the frame. My rear drum brake housings rusted out completely, and I've got a few small holes in my floor. Fender wells are a common rust area on these. As long as you are at least a little mechanically inclined, I would absolutely recommend these trucks! I haul dirt bikes and motorcycles almost daily with my truck and its always gotten me back home!

I own a 1994 sev6 and I love it. To my knowledge it has every option it could possibly have had other than the bar in the bed. Power windows and AC still work great. Came from the factory with a limited slip diff and doesnt really stuggle to put out a nice fat burn out. 4x4 is a champion and I've even been hit in the side once and it left a dent in the bed that came right out. Couldnt ask for a better pickup. I want a little more power but a vg engine is tough and there is work that can make them better. Ive jumped this truck in the air mulitiple times and crashed into a number of trees but you wouldnt be able to tell. Only problem is its an interference engine and I did have a timing belt break prematurely and it munched its own valves so I bought a 60,000 mile engine from Japan and its back to being my daily driver.

I have had a 97 2x4 regular cab manual XE for five years it now has 165,000 miles on it. I use it around town mostly going to the hardware store and picking up 16 foot long lumber which I put on top in the ladder rack. I absolutely adore this truck. I am a very big older man and it’s very comfortable. I had to put a new radiator in it and it cost me $46 which we easily did in my front yard. Surprisingly, the little dude is snappy as I regularly blow off F1 50s and Chevrolets are from the line and I know very much they are impressed… Other than putting front brakes on there has been almost no maintenance other than oil changes. A Neighbor had one exactly like it and blew out his engine, so I bought it and will put in a crate motor and customize the paint… Really trick it out with the roll bar look. I also thought about putting an electric motor in it. If you don’t own one of these… to be fair it is not a highway vehicle in my opinion after about 50 mph it feels like you’re going 180 mph… But for a fun little run around vehicle you cannot beat it. The only other bad side is the gas mileage which is about 16 in town and 24 on the highway.

Still own both a 1988 regular cab v6 4x4 and a 1990 4 cylinder king cab 4x4. Bought the first for $500 and it needed a transmission so I switched it to a manual that I already had from a Pathfinder. 1990 was given to me for free as they thought the head gasket was blown. The pulled and tore the engine apart to rebuild it and bought most of the parts needed. It wasn't the head gasket, it was the front timing cover. The timing chain guides failed and they drove it till the chain wore though the front cover at the coolant passage hence the coolant in the oil. I've had it running for the last 1 1/2 years and am very happy with both trucks. Both trucks don't have allot of rust on them either where I'm at in Oregon.

I owned two a 88 2x4 4 cy 5 speed i paid a little over 7000 I drove it five years and 300000 miles I gave it to my brother and it needed a clutch. He changed the clutch only major maintenance we ever did to it he drove it ten years not sure of miles speedometer cable failed at around 350000. It’s was getting badly rusted so we attached the rear axle to a irrigation pump and used it to irrigate the farm for five more years. It tended to overheat running the pump so we took out the thermostat and recirculated by some of the pond water pumped thru the engine. That solved the overheating. We finally sold it when the transmission started growling to a fella down the road for a parts donor he needed the cab for his wreaked truck. One of the best farm trucks we ever owned. I got a 4x4 four cylinder five speed in 93 paid about 13000 and it was very good too, I burnt the transmission by jacking it up and putting huge tires on it. Trans was rebuilt at around 180000 and I traded it at about 260000. The trans problem totally my fault was the only issue I had with the 93 I didn’t get another Nissan hardbody because they had swapped to that ford ranger clone at the time I wanted to replace it. Loved them D21s wish I could buy a new one today.

1995 Nissan PU XE-V6 4x4, purchased in 2003 with 47k, now has 144k - used on weekends and vacations for camping, 4-wheeling. Has never broken down and has started every single time I turned the key. Regular maintenance has occurred on time or mileage (whichever first), using good fluids and OEM parts (until recently, as parts have started to run out at Nissan warehouses). Almost all work done to the truck has been preemptive maintenance or upgrades. Most recent project was changing the clutch due to oil intrusion from the transmission:engine backing plate -- due to the way oil pours onto the starter and onto the ledge of the oil pan, after 25 years of oil changes, oil finally got into the bell housing and onto the clutch. Without going into the exhaustive list of details of what I've done to the truck to keep it running like new, one of the key flaws in this vehicle design is the front suspension -- the single pivot, tension-rod lower control arm is an atrocity and one of the reasons this truck doesn't have much of a cult following. The next primary issue with this vehicle is the total lack of aftermarket support and parts availability. Nissan abandoned it and the aftermarket did not pick it up -- parts are very hard to find, quality is low, and any remaining better parts are often expensive. Nissan no longer sells things like exhaust gaskets, suspension bushings, clutches (Centerforce is a reasonable alternative), suspension ball joints, and a variety of other parts for this vehicle. If you're crafty and persistent, these things can be overcome with a lot of sifting and parts inspection. All that said, 25 years and the thing still starts every... single... time. Applause to Nissan for that, but they should call me if they'd like to know why their trucks don't have a following -- I've had theirs apart head-to-toe and can tell them why their designs aren't competing with Toyota, et al. Great video and thanks for the review of this truck's history and design!

I had my 1989 SE 4X4 King Cab manual transmission for 14 years. That truck and I went a lot of places. It was very reliable. I had to replace the leaf springs in the rear since both snapped and I fought the good fight against the rust. It was undercoated yearly but still liked to rust. The fender flares were terrible for keeping moisture and dirt against the truck surface. It had the 31" tires but went to a slightly smaller tire since the truck's power was really zapped by such a big tire. The truck was a light blue color which i didn't really like a first but the grew into it in time. I had only seen one other like it in NH. I loved the sunroof the rear tip out windows and the rear slider. It let a lot of air into the truck. The truck that replaced it is a 2007 Frontier King Cab in dark blue. I can't believe it's 14 years old too but I'm not ready to let it go yet. As far as I know the Hardbody is still running about in NH. Thanks for the info on the truck! I own a 1992 Nissan hardbody d21 kingcab. My speed gauge worked every so often. I toke my gauge out and drive around for a few miles. Do you know if I can put a tool on my motor so I can know the exact miles on the truck so the cluster matches? Thank you.

Mine is a 2000 year model, 4 cil, base truck, single cab. It runs better than new vehicles. It gave me 3 problems during this years: First, the wooden beams that connect the frame to the box (flat bed) went bad and I ended up making a steel frame extension that gave it more rigidity and shaved weight. Second, the timing chain and chain tensors are worn out, so I need to replace them asap to get rid of the chain noise that comes when it is started. Third, the steering is worn out, I was short on money, so I bought a remanufactured steering bottle, but there is nothing like getting a brand new one from nissan (they are expensive as hell). Other than that it is perfectly fine, I rather pour 5-7K to get it perfect again (timing chain, new flat bed, wheels, tires, suspension, lift, paint and some other custom work) than spending around 20k for a new one that will need a custom flat bed, frame extensions, lift and other custom things anyway.

Timing chain guide failure in the KA is a common flaw, upgrade to the metal backed guide with an aftermarket tensioner recommended!
@bfrankz33323 жыл бұрын
Later years had metal backed...My 97 (the almighty year!) has 180k on it and no noise. I added a spacer on the tensioner to stop the classic chain rattle at start up but thats it!
@hehunches3 жыл бұрын
@@bfrankz3332 yeah I personally prefer (call me a snob) the pre 1993 facelift look as far as asthetics... but you can't beat the metal backed guide for upgrades. It should have been a RECALL. Hello?Nissan? Nope. Nobody is home.

Had an issue with my speedometer not working on my 1997 check engine light came on saying that the speed sensor was to blame, it wasn’t. It was the screws that hold the speedometer gage on the back of the instrument pane where loose Easy fix found a video on KZbin guy fixing a maxima that uses the same cluster as the hardbodies. Free fix if the speedometer works and then stops sometimes. Tap the dashboard while driving to see if the speedometer starts or stops.

I use to have one, a very short time sadly. Still the one I regret the most selling, of course not helped by the reason to sell it was me listening to other people complain about how stupid it was as I had to borrow a car with more seating when I had it. How many time have I in the 10 years since needed more seating? no times, none at all... So yeah I was stupid for listening, the Nissan was not stupid.

Nissan should bring it back, just as it was at the end of its run. I think it would sell like crazy with current trucks being so big and expensive. I bought a used 1987 KC 2WD in 1995 with 204000 miles as a cheap all purpose rig, planning to upgrade in time. Instead, I still have it with 426000 on the clock. Engine was refreshed close to 300000, rest of running gear is orig with exception of synthetic lubes. The whole line of Nissan and Datsun trucks since the 220 has been so innovative and durable, yet somehow people now consider Toyota as far superior. Globally. the Nissan Navara appears to be legendary. They are ripping around Africa with twin-turbo diesels.

Got a 1991 manual 2wd KA single cab as my first vehicle, still have it and still love it. Used to have a 1995 manual 4wd VG king cab on Guam, it was a truly different vehicle all together and just an absolutely wonderful truck to own. As far as I know, it's still driving around that little island today, I was so hurt to have to let it go but it went to a good home. I would like to get another one day and restore it right. I haven't run into any reoccuring problems besides the tie rods wearing quickly due to the torsion bars being tightened to clear 31 inch 10.5 wide mud tires on the 95 and using cheap rods. The 91 is on the original engine with it's fourth or fifth timing set and third transmission rebuilt. Unknown if the rear end has been rebuilt. Currently around 280K miles on it.
