Proud 50 years old French female here, not much in metal (i play harp ) but i thought this was EEEEEEPIIIIc !! Metal music and Assassin Creed, an opera singer and the french revolution all wrapped in one single package....fucking proud !! We allow all kinds of religious freedom but will never let religious integrists who don't even know that most catholic symbolysm come from the early ages of paganism dictate what we can do and what we can think ! We paid already a huge price in blood for that cultural freedom but we keep pushing. (you could call us cocky....well we have a rooster as symbol of France, the only animal to sing while knee deep in shit ^^). I lost 3 friends in the Paris attacks during the concert of Eagles of Death Metal and right now my chest is bursting with pride because we dared throw Metal music in the face of all kinds of morons. In my heart, this is a huge tribute to all the victims who died in Paris just because they were sitting in a bar or attending a heavy metal concert. This is our way of doing things when hurt : we reply with unity and culture instead And i give you that : we like to disagree with everything and are not afraid to express our opinions and demonstrate in the streets (we could create a whole new olympic field with this). I would love to see Metallica at big american event...maybe for the nex president oath ceremony ?? ^^

Exactly - the short performance was the most metal thing I've seen in a while. Singing about that brutal revolution era, surronded by beheaded nobility, with the "bloodstreaks" on side of a castle where Marie-Antoinette was imprisoned before execution... I don't understand how anyone does not see this as a milestone for metal music. And I am not a Gojira fan.

I love Gojira, but to be fair, there's not that many known or even popular French metal bands. Also, Gojira are lefty and into all kinds of activism, and just super popular by their own merit right now, so it was an easy choice. I remember seeing them open up for behemoth at a small venue like in 2007 to headline the Mexico metal fest last year and now opening the freaking Olympics wow! 👏 🤘

There is no telling if for events like the Super Bowl, a heavy metal band could be invited to play at the Halftime show. Europe is more liberal and free than the USA. Metal has problems finding advertising partners there too, but the big media reports on the big metal festivals. The biggest metal festival in France is called Hellfest and has 60,000 visitors and is partially broadcast by a public broadcaster. The name alone would make conservatives in the USA freak out. The Olympics are well on their way to disappearing altogether, so eventually it will be a moot point. Every municipality that hosts it loses at least a billion dollars of taxpayer money, as the only return on investment with this event is prestige. Often historic communities or ethnic enclaves are displaced and bulldozed for the Olympic site development. This creates both immediate and lasting divisions in the local populations. After the big show, these enormous modern facilities are abandoned for lack of local population and revenue to use and maintain them. They begin to decay and create public safety issues, thus entailing the further uncompensated expense of demolition. They are increasingly targets of protest, vandalism and terrorism. Pollution is always an issue in the watersports now, and global warming is making many global locations dangerously hot for outdoor events. They cant even find snow anymore for the Winter Olympics anymore. Hey, but at least metal landed one good on on them with GOJIRA.

All of these points are true and I unfortunately do not see an end to the Olympics in sight. When has negative consequences ever stopped the powers that be from coming somewhere, extracting a shitload of wealth, and then leaving the locals with the damage after they leave? I covered their tour with Dethklok for Metal Digest and I've never seen an audience go off like that at a metal concert. It was like a mosh pit mixed with a rave mixed with a pop concert and convention. It was crazy! I'd love to see them at the SB 😆🤘🤘

I'm sorry buy you're wrong to think that Gojira would be a pride for France. Actually, I'm sure that they are more known in USA than in France (and Joe and Mario are half american by their mother). Metallica is known by every US kids. That's not the case for Gojira. It happens that one of the artistic manager of the ceremony, Dafne Burki, is a huge Gojira fan and the artistic team wanted to take artistic risk on this ceremony. Gojira was perfect to illustrate one of our more bloody part of History, the french revolution,. Actually, rock is not a big part fo french pop culture. Metal is a niche music, despite the Hellfest, one of the biggest metal festival worldwide.
