I recently went down the projector rabbit hole to get set up in my medium sized apartment living room with a 110” screen. I ended up returning everything and deciding to just upgrade my 65” OLED to a new 77“. I think projectors are great if you can get your room dialed in but I made the mistake of thinking I could just buy a screen, buy a projector and call it a day. The main problem I ran into is eyestrain. The screen was probably too big for my viewing angle for starters, but the main issue was brightness; in order to get the image bright enough where I was happy with it, I had to have the projector way too bright for a pitch dark room, thus creating an uncomfortable contrast level. HDR relies on high contrast to pop, so it’s a difficult situation unless you have a very well calibrated home theater set up (dark walls, dark ceiling, correct gain screen, proper viewing distance, correct amount of ambient light, etc.) and probably a much better projector than I wanted to buy (I maxed out an an Epson 5050ub for $3k). There’s a lot you have to get right to make a set up really good. I just want to remind people of that who are maybe now where I was a month ago. A projector set up can be a very expensive way to get a worse quality image than an OLED will give you. If you really care about video quality, a good projector set up is going to take some time and money. That being said, if you get it all right, projectors are amazing! When I buy a house I’ll definitely try again with projectors. But for now, large OLED was a lot less headache for a size (and quality) upgrade in my apartment. Good luck!

Projectgors are low-rez to start with. HD or WUXGA, very few of them true UHDs, as most of them are "Faux-K" Fake-4Ks (except for JVCs, but the cost a mint). HDR is crap. With a display, TV, or PJ. Not worth bothering with. If you need to go over 100-inch screen size, you are much better off with a video wall, threre are those that are 150-inches diagonally just by attaching 2 pieces mounted onto the wall.

There is one other significant reason NOT to buy a projector not mentioned above: sensitivity to rainbow effect artifact (RBE). Most projectors intended for home use currently on the market are single-DLP. Single-DLP projectors necessarily have to use sequential color, and sequential color always produces color breakup artifact, more popularly known as RBE. Though most people are not sensitive to it, or learn how to tune out its headache-inducing effects, there will always be individuals who have very short retina persistence times they see the individual primary colors as they flash in succession, instead of having them ideally meld into a composite full-color image. RBE is determined by such factors like type of video sources being viewed, viewing conditions, and individual sensitivity. Since it is unpredictable, professional venues (like cinemas) will never ever use any single-chip projector; they exclusively use 3-chip projectors. To guarantee absolute absence of RBE, the only way is with 3-chip projectors, and the only manufacturers who exclusively make and sell 3-chip for home use are epson (3-LCD) and sony and jvc (3-LCoS). If 3-chip projectors are too expensive for you, just stick with a big TV instead of subjecting yourself to potential RBE punishment. TVs don't produce RBE.

RBE is because of Color wheel . There are 3RGB-LED projectors with 3 leds (red, green and blue ) instead of 1 led and they don't have RBE problems with 1 Dlp projectors. I had one projector like that and I can confirm there is no RBE problems . But I will never buy a laser projector or led projector again because the light source is unchangeable .

Honorable mentions: - Fan noise - Different projectors can have different quirks that you won’t find on any TV such as re-syncing every time the input signal changes in any way. (Up to 5secs. And sometimes doesn’t sync the first time.) - DLP projectors can be a space heater. - Will possibly need an expensive fiber optic hdmi cable for high-quality at long runs. - Remote control is typically horrible. - when listening to music if you want to make any adjustments to the sound via on screen display of an AV receiver you have to turn your projector on which adds fan noise and uses lamp life And you cannot turn projectors on and off quickly.

@@ChrisMajestic I don't doubt it. But right now my panel is on an arm that swings out and can pivot about 80 degrees. It makes it easier to see via the couch which is off to the side from the wall. I am sure the viewing angle of the short throw would work, but it wouldn't be optimal for regular viewing. It would be like being on the "extreme" side of a movie theater near the first few rows. Maybe OK for one flick if you really want to see it. But for regular viewing, maybe not so much.

Why does image quality deteriorate after changing the lamp a few times? I know that the brightness of a lamp will be reduced as the lamp ages. Is it because of dust settling on the elemets, such as the colour wheel and DMD? Or because the LCD gets bleached by the light source/lamp?

If you want to build a projector setup for under 150 bucks. Go buy: A cheap projector around $100 because it doesn't matter whether you spend a hundred or $500 it's the same crap. They're probably both going to break or stop working within a year. 1"dia dowel 48" is probably the smallest you can find. A 12"x12 piece of oak. You can probably find it in the scrap section at your local hardware store. Some m45 and M35 bolts Go get a couple samples of any ultra white paint from home Depot Lowe's whatever it's usually like $2. Plaster of Paris Measure the screw holes for the mounts. Drill those out on your piece of wood. Cut down rod to specific size drill hole on mounting end to platform on the bottom of the dow. Drill a hole on the 12x12 piece of wood where you want to mount the Dow. Drill a hole through the Dow near the top. Marry the Dow to the Peace of wood using a bolt a little larger than the hole you originally drilled. This boat should probably be at least a few inches long considering you're hanging your projector from it. You should've already drilled the holes for where the mounts on your projector are going to go. These holes should be a little bit larger than your mounting bolts. M Bolts If you don't have to get a projector screen than don't buy one. When doing this make sure you mix the plaster of Paris and water together before mixing with the paint and make sure it's ice cold or at least room temp. Just mix that 16 oz of paint with 2/3 cup of plaster of paris and a 2/3cup of water and then slap that on your wall. It'll be the flattest paint ever. Also you should be able to get this done in one coat. If you really want to step it up a notch further you can go by the polycrylic ultra flat and put that on the wall as well and that'll give you your "HD" depth. Assuming you have the tools that whole setup is $20. If you need to rent a drill I'm sure it's 25 bucks for the day. I've had several cheap projectors over the last few years, this year I bought a 710 LG and a 810 LG. As far as I can tell there is no difference between $100 projector and a $500 projector as far as viewing quality. Operating controls are usually sloppy and not intuitive; and this is seems to be across the board with all of these cheap projectors. Both LG projectors have way better operating systems than any of the cheap projector I bought prior. Magic remote is great ( it's also backlit which is super crucial for projectors because the rooms probably going to be dark), the systems are way more intuitive, and the amount of adjustment is far superior. I got my 710 open box for $1,200. That's in my bedroom and it's 120 inch screen at least and it's clear ,vibrant, and bright. And you can easily watch it during the day with the curtains open and even the lights on. Also you can adjust the picture with the remote in your hand with the 710. I got the 810 because I was putting it outside. I probably wouldn't buy this again because the 710 is just as the 810, when it comes to pic quality. it doesn't have the screen adjustment from the remote and for some reason they decided to not color the guis. 🤷. A couple other notes too. I have a couple of rare eye conditions. LEDs and projector bulbs strain on them. I noticed this when watching my cheap projector in my room with my blinds down. It fatigued my eyes more. Neither of these LG projectors do this. They're very easy on my eyes. I also had catastrophic failure with my 810, I guess I didn't tie the cover down hard enough on my pergola. And during a torrential downpour, water was just spilling on to the projector. But somehow someway it's still working. It'll probably stop after I post this.

To be honest, on the first point (brightness) - I have an LG OLED in my living room as the main TV and it's just as un-useable during the day in any scene that isn't super-bright with the curtains open as my projector is, although because of reflection rather than brightness. So while it's a factor, I don't think projectors suffer all that much more now than high end TVs do.

You can’t beat the cinema immersion of a projector. I have the Hisense 100 inch tv for the day. Then drop down my 160 inch screen at night. With the Awol 3500 pro. You can’t beat the mini led brightness of the tv during the day. And 3500 lumens at night with the projector, a great experience. But have only one, tv, or projector, isn’t never going to be good. The arguments are over, when you have both. Unless they bring in 150 inch tvs that are affordable

Sorry, I'm just a bit tired to answer the "why do you have X and not Y?" question with reasoning like "it's cheaper/thinner/brighter/bigger/smaller/and-simply-better". Understand what you need and act accordingly. Thanks for the video!

Hi please give me a response, I am planning to buy this but however already have a good experience with Epson LCD projector .and worried to buy This BenQ projector because of picture quality and rainbow effect caused by DLP projectors like BenQ,. and in other side Epson projectors known as Pro UHD which only has 4 million pixels even with a 4K resolution still lacks of pixels compare to this BenQ model who have 8 million pixels, is it mean this BenQ model is real 4k and superior ? and Epson tw 6150 is not ? Which one I should choose ? Thanks

1. Image Quality: Projectors may not provide the same level of image quality and clarity as high-end LED or OLED TVs. The picture can appear less vibrant, especially in brightly lit rooms, and the resolution might not match the latest 4K or 8K TVs, affecting details and sharpness. 2. Space and Environment: Projectors require a dedicated space with controlled lighting conditions. Ambient light can wash out the projected image, making it necessary to have a dark room, which may not be practical for everyone. 3. Noise and Maintenance: Projectors often have cooling fans that can be noisy during operation. Additionally, they require periodic maintenance, such as changing bulbs or cleaning filters, which can be an added expense and inconvenience. 4. Room Size: Projectors are more suitable for larger rooms due to their need for a certain distance between the projector and the screen or wall. In smaller living spaces, it can be challenging to achieve the desired screen size and viewing distance. 5. Portability: If you need a display that you can easily move around, projectors may not be the best choice. They typically require ceiling or wall mounting and can be bulkier and less portable compared to a flat-screen TV, which can be mounted on a wall or placed on a stand with ease. Considering these factors can help you decide whether a projector is the right choice for your specific needs and living space.

The problem is that a good projector that is bright enough and has great contrast will cost you 26,000 dollars JVC or Sony. A projector at least needs to be 3000 plus lumens. And a laser projector at that. Tv prices have went down so much. TCL has a 100-inch mini led tv for 10,000 dollars.

I've had my Epson projector for 6 years and haven't had to change my bulb 💡 yet. But I'm also not on it for 10 hours a day, which is ridiculous if someone spends that much time staring at a tv.😂

anything but xenon is trash to my eyes lol. It just looks like a giant LCD tv. I still love my 2000 JVC D-ILAs they were like $15,000 back then only 1000 hour lamps luckily the lamps arent $800 anymore but if you truly want the look of a theater you want xenon. LED has too much blue light in it. If you watch say a DVD of a film that was shot on 35mm film instead of digital the color latitude is incredible. It looks like a real theater which still use xenon today. its basically like a 420 watt space heater but yeah I miss running mine. Movies in technicolor? unbelievable.

I’m struggling to find a ultra short throw to meet my needs. It’s difficult to balance cost to performance. I’m looking for a 50-50 use of movies and gaming. I thought the Epson ls300 would work but then I see comments that the input lag is too high. I’m not a competitive gamer but do play some shooters that need a decent response. If you have any recommendations please let me know. Thanks for the videos.

Main reason for a projector: things in real life also light not by themselves but because they reflect light from an external source. This image impression is imitated by a projector. That objects light up by themselves as shown on a TV is unnatural. Therefore, I would always prefer a projector to a TV, also because of the unattainable and affordable image size.

Fantastic video, as always. Only issue I have is the average lifespan of a TV. These days TV's last about 10 years. It doesn't matter the backlight lifespan. There's other things that kill TV's and most of the time there's some power module or some other circuit that dies and needs to be replaced which in most cases doesn't make financial sense to fix. If a TV lasted 20 years these days it would be a modern day miracle but the chance is that person would have upgraded by that point. Although I did have a CRT type TV that lasted me 23 years once, so there's that.

I don't know about gaming but for film watching even a budget projector makes a huge difference compared to the most advanced TV. It´s not about the screen area or technical specs, it about the TEXTURE of the image. It´s like listening to analog music vs digital or watching a printed photograph vs a picture on a computer. And you can not experience or define it on YT video, you need to experience it by yourself. I´ve been watching films on low/mid-range projectors for the past 15 years, and I can tell that once you get used to it, there is no way back to watching films on a TV: all look filmed on a high-res Handycam from the 90´s on a TV, while on a projector you can get a real "movie experience" where the image of each film has its own personality as it was more or less intended by the director of photography of the film.

Makes sense. It's kind of like CRT displays VS. LCD. It has qualities than even the most advanced technology can't duplicate. More of a natural analog feel to it.
