I don't hate Arch Enemy, I like quite a few of their songs. I do, however, take issue with the fact that they hired one of the most talented guitarist/songwriters in metal with his very unique style that many people love, then fail to use him to the potential that could've elevated the band to a much better place. Jeff Loomis wants to create... Jeff Loomis NEEDS to create. He should not be a place holder that gives "cred" to a band just because his name is attached to it. Let him do the dark 7 string stuff that made him who he is.

Make your decision people. I don't mind if metal/hard rock bands change their sound (ex: Metallica, Queen) and but I also don't mind if some bands have the same signature style over and over again (ex: AC/DC, Motörhead)
@Gregbaltzer7 жыл бұрын
But you can keep the core sound and still do something new every album, and grow as a band artistically. I don't think you need to change your sound much to bring in some new flavors, or try something you've never done on an album before. Just to keep it fresh. I loved Arch Enemy up until the Chaos album when they just stopped feeling fresh, and just to feel like they were just milking a formula. I love Motorhead too, but at a point I stopped being excited for a new Motorhead release because I knew exactly what it was going to sound like, but I still bought them all. I get excited for new Voivod, Enslaved, Corrosion of Conformity, and Satyricon albums because I don't know what I'm going to get. I kind of feel like Testament of locked onto a tiring formula too. The new Testament album did nothing for me.
@Gregbaltzer7 жыл бұрын
I do think there was more variation in earlier Motorhead albums then there was in the last 5-6 albums, which did all seem to be the same. They had several band member changes earlier on in their career and that effected their sound quite a bit, but then they got a steady line up of Lemmy, Phil, and Micky Dee and things didn't change much sound wise after that.

The common remark I've heard about them, is the main reason the band is getting noticed, is because Alissa brings sex appeal to the group. Whether that's true or not, she definately gets quite a bit of notoriety, which is interesting coming from a music genre that honestly gets overlooked in the public eye. Yet, she's been turning heads in the mainstream music world. You'll see her on covers and article clips fairly often as of late...Very intresting.

I discovered them as they were opening for Nightwish. I didn't know anything about the band, my first impression was that empty stage with a glorious backdrop and that looked pretty badass. Then they came and this blue-hair fury was growling like hell, and I thought "wow, I think I should educate myself about this band". Which I did. This said, it's true that AE has its own flavour since the beginning, with composition automatisms some would call "gimmicks". You could say the same thing about Slayer. Anyway, they spare no effort to promote their last album and they tour like crazy. They are one of the few modern bands to "carry the cross" of heavy metal when the metallica-era bands will retire, so they deserve our respect and our support.

I think you missed quite a big one: the accusation that their studio recordings are overproduced. I've heard/read this many times and honestly think it's nonsense. Nobody really accuses Iron Maiden of being overproduced and this is probably a more apt comparison than the ones certain metal fans are making, since Maiden are obviously a huge influence on the Arch Enemy sound. The idea that because it's somewhere within the genre of death metal it therefore must be 'raw' or even downright badly produced, otherwise it isn't 'authentic' is just another example of the way fans tend to insist on putting everything into restrictive boxes.

#1 reason: Arch Enemy is wasting Jeff Loomis's talent.
@julianfelton30687 жыл бұрын
Arch Enemy has it's flaws like most bands do but by this point if you don't like them despite the changes and things they perfected then don't listen. Theirs nothing worst than a bunch of whining elitist masquerading as metalheads trying to make opinions law or truth like it has any weight to it. Johan was okay not that great of vocalist but I do see what makes Burning Bridges a great album. Angela is a fucking beast for her vocal style and the dismissive towards then and now is pathetic. To me it seems like a lot of men scared or emasculated by the fact a woman can be equally as talented as them. My guess is a lot of people were pissed because she sounded better than some of their favorite shitty vocalists were. And the final and most biggest Issues being with Alissa and the lyrics. First of the lyrics aren't that bad sure some are better than others. But it's obvious whatever their speaking on they like to get to the point instead of a bunch of intellectual fat that seems pointless while getting to the meat(message) of the song. Besides in most cases Amott's lyrics are the ones that are bad but some of them I didn't mind it was that big of deal honestly. And the ones written by the vocalist showed more thought and complexity if it wanted too. Lastly all the hate placed on Alissa is completely sexist and not too mention overall wrong on all levels. This woman if most of you heard The Agonist knows this girl is fucking insane with her vocal style and clearly indicates why that band so damn unique and on the rise to better things. But because Alissa is pretty and has joined AE somehow it's all about looks as if she wasn't out with this band for the last three and half years keeping this band alive with hard work and dedication. Alissa being pretty has nothing to do with the vocals in Arch Enemy that's just the little boys being immature as usual. Angela handpicked her because she knew what she did the Agonist took fucking skill and talent not looks. So every time you diss Alissa you're really dissing Angela because their friends and she chose her a reason. Don't like it leave then and listen to something else AE I'm pretty sure will do fine without you! Great video CKN!!!

Im 50 (old metalhead) and have a love for Arch Enemy. Album Burning Bridges a fave album in my metal listening life. Johan's vocals with the music was a marriage made in heaven for one fave Melo-Death albums I've ever listened to. Truly I was sad when Johan's gone. Then came along Wages of Sin with the song Burning Angel. Loved the album so much, I went and got an Arch Enemy Tattoo on my chest which was the first tattoo shown on the AE website years ago and picture of Angela getting me in a headlock at Milwaukee Metalfest. AE's "sound" has progressed to an alteration outside of the realm of sound I enjoy listening to. To me AE is kinda boring now. I enjoy Alyssa Gluz vocals, but my ear does not deeply enjoy the combination of AG's vox and latest AE sound. I think Arch Enemy has got rather pedestrian....dull....plain. Its nothing to do with the singers (Angela & Alyssa) themselves, just the whole package is dull. To me the package of Liiva and album Burning Bridges, I would have love to see another album come from that. On my ears, Burning Bridges was AE's peak and long slow downhill from there since then. As I say "package" because although I love Liiva's vocals but the efforts in Carnage/Hearse/Non-exist and all them albums, I only find the song The Devil Incarnate from NonExist Deus Decepter a "total" package deal; rocks right out, thoroughly pleasing to my ears which one who listened to early AE will find is the closest to the old AE sound. For me not "hate" but rather "pining" or "love lorn" for something in the past I miss dearly. I miss Liiva Arch Enemy with the darkness of Liiva's voice and AE sound, breaking out into melodic-rocking-the-fuck-out guitar solos. Liiva's vocals "forced" the guitarwork to break out of the agony and darkness into energetic rocking guitar solos. Liiva's vocal forced lots of guitar play. There just aint that kind of sound anymore. AE sounds like 20 other bands nowadays. Can you blame me wrong for my opinion of the wonderful works of Liiva's vocals tied to this particular early AE sound is "beauty in darkness"? kzbin.info/www/bejne/npzYfWuEoZ14Z8U kzbin.info/www/bejne/bafXm5mpltN-paM if you can believe this song below is 21 years old, the timeless... kzbin.info/www/bejne/iGezhGWtpKlsnM0 The breakup of Liiva and AE has robbed the heavy metal nation (including me) of future greatest Melo-Death albums possible of all time.

Mr Coverkiller, 4 very good points sir, and 1 rather confusing one: 'don't like the sound'. The guitars? The vocals? Sharlee's bass? Daniel's drumming? This music is called metal. If ppl don't like metal why are they listening in the first place? I am a massive promoter/advocator of ffbm, ffdm, ffhm female metal, and i agree with you that this blatent sexism is vomitable - and stems from envy, jealousy small dicks, whatever, and belongs only in the neolithic age. The problem (with all problems in the multiverse) is wording: like elitist, purist etc etc. ppl (usually guys), like to be part of a clique and feel they are cool if they are in a club. Female black, death gothic ans extreme metal in general, is often fantastic... AND SUPERIOR to their male equivalents: Onielar (my wife) can hold her own against any bm guy you care to name, and DNS is probably the greatest band in this multuverse. Alissa, Angela, Sandra from Nekrodelirium, Vanja Obscure and Cadaveria are equally competent, as is Nina from Eastern Front. I am a purist and an elitist, but not for male metal but for Metal full stop, period or whatever. As you say we pride ourselves for being open to allcomers so please lets cut the crap and open ourselves to female metal ffs! Btw it is not elitist or purists that dislike ffm or female metal, nor male metal musicians, they are happy to see our sisters carrying the flag, it is bigotted wife-beating talentless wannabe fans wherein the problem lies! Hail Metal and hail female metal, even in our much maligned cousin, metalcore. Judge on ability, creativity and moshability...not gender plese...give she's a chance 😫 lml

My Arch Enemy experience was this: I discovered them on a Metal compilation DVD. There were two videos that stood out to me one was Therion's To Mega Therion, and Arch Ememy's We Will Rise. Both I thought were really good songs. I played the shit out of We Will Rise and quickly became a fan of the band. I went and bought Anthems, then Wages, and loved them, then Doomsday, and Rise of the Tyrants came out and I loved those too. I never felt Arch Enemy brought anything new to metal, but what they did was really good. When they did the Chaos album I just started to feel liked they locked onto a formula, and were just milking it to death. The band started to look like a Nascar pit crew, and their songs just seemed to centered on teen rebellion, which is okay giving the key demographic, but I couldn't relate anymore. I don't hate them, just got bored of them. They are talented musicians, who are talented song writers, but just keep milking the same formula. And I don't like Alissa nearly as much as Angela. Metal doesn't have to be original, lets face it that just gets harder and harder with each generation, as long as it's done really well. And there was a point around Anthems, Wages, and Doomsday, that Arch Enemy were doing metal really well.

5 reasons people hate arch enemy. they've got 5 band members right???, well there ja go. disneylanddeathmetal, it's more of a show then music that gets you pumped like the bigger thrashers or death bands.

You can say that problem is that Melodic death metal is "old" genre, so its almost "impossible" to be innovative..but in contrast to Arch Enemy, take a look at Dark Tranquillit, these guys are undeniably melodic death metal band, but they are still evolving their sound and every album seems fresh...while Amott is stuck in the same melodic and rhythm patterns for 20 years.

Why do people on here say the change between female vocals is why old fans hate it? They literally had male vocals in the past. I grew up on silver wing, not Angela. I don't give a shit about switching female vocals, I hate that when they switched from male to female vocals the guitars and theme changed too.

I think people are a little too concerned about originality these days. I'm a little bit less picky and I am just sort of a melodic death metal junkie. Her voice sounds just as awesome as plenty of other male voices in death metal. And the fact that her voice isn't as guttural as most of the males makes her sound slightly more thrash metal, which I am actually more into. Arch Enemy seems pretty awesome and I would totally want to see them, if they came to my area.

Well, I don’t like harsh vocals done by females. However this has nothing to do with sexism. I just don’t like the way it sounds. Men have naturally deeper voices and therefore things like death growls suit much better for them. You can sometimes find a woman who can pull it off, but such occasions are rare.

I like old arch enemy with Angela! They're very first two albums is fucking disgusting. My personal favourite arch enemy album is Wages of Sin, Doomsday Machine, Anthems of Rebellion.

The problem is Alissa... to be honest, I loved her in Kamelot's albums and in agonist (Not too bright on the second band which is basically her original band) but she's imo, got a major role in Arch enemy becoming shit

Anthems of rebellion is still my favourite album from arch enemy. I've never been a huge fan of arch enemy, but I do own every album and am proud to say so. They're a good band, but I do feel that after 2007 they've turned into "generic" metal. I mean their music keeps getting lighter and lighter by the album, and the basic -intro, riff, generic guitar melody chorus, riff- formula is just not for me. I still like them, but they've definitely done the same thing as Nightwish; gone too mainstream to make anything "original" anymore. Still like em though

Just the fact that Alissa White-Gluz can go that low AND growl just shows that women can do anything that men can do. Am I right or am I right

Alissa is a bad example, and she can't really go that low. Check out Simone Pluijmers for a better female growler.

arch songs are just plain less aggressive then they use to be, its the only thing that really bothers me. all bands do that with age ofc even the ones i like 😭 i just sound like a broken record here....but 9/10 of these melodic deathmetal bands popping up are just riding the name instead of admiting they're metalcore or screamo which is some slightly less desirable shit in my opinion

Fuck all that shit, I've been listening to metal for almost all my life, and only recently came across arch enemy. The first song I heard was war eternal I thought It was the coolest thing that she has as much power as she does. Is it as powerful as a male? No. But she can still get the vocals down! I'm a fan.

I personally dont have a issue with women in metal i mean i love mythic an underrated with old school death metal band and i love girlschool but with arch enemy i dont know why to me it just feels more like a gimmick where with girlschool and mythic it felt more ernest is that the word and another reason im not a fan of arch enemy is because i hate melodic death metal and i feel they are overproduced and their music is boring

I'm a fan as well and yes, it would be easy but maybe it could lead to some different reasons why rather than the typical points of interest. I've never heard CKN say people don't like a band "because their is too much going on" in any of his 5 reasons why vids (haven't seen all his vids so maybe he has). I get that every now and again when share Rings with people, metal and non-metalheads.

Brunetto46 Whats REALLY disappointing about their new album is that Jeff did NOT get one single writing credit in their music! I was really looking forward to hearing their new album with Jeff in the band to see how Arch Enemy's music would "progress". What's even more disappointing is that Michael's brother, Chris, co-wrote a song. And he's not in the freaking band!! Major disappointment!!

IMO the last really badass Arch Enemy album was Wages of Sin. Everything before that was great stuff, but everything since has felt more commercialized while each album hasn't really had it's own identity since Anthems of Rebellion in 2003. The songs all feel very similar and interchangeable from album to album....too predictable. Whereas back on the Black Earth album all the way through Wages of Sin, there was much more innovation there, as well as just a harder edge to the playing and a more natural vibe.
