i dont hate them.I just don't like anything about them. It's not appealing to me, the music doesn't give me any of the feelings that all sorts of different genres give me. It doesn't make me think, or tap my feet,or bang my head, or feel cool or badass. The songs,riffs,vocals all sound the same to me, the videos all look the same to me (video style is unique for sure but after the first time the charm wears off since all the videos are in that style) I don't feel like they feel they're making music. I feel like they think they're being super deep and artistic and making commentary about society but the shit sounds the same and it isn't deep and none of it means anything. My only negative feelings is a little resentment because so many people play them so much and act like it's amazing, and even that isn't usually genuine

Having said that, it is preposterous of you to claim that everyone who likes them are being fake, or just want to be cool..... TBH I personally think that Tool is one of the greatest bands of our time, but at the same time I can't really easily recommend them to everyone. I mean, they really have a sound and style that's so unique that most of the time you'll find 3 types of people regarding them: people who love them, people who hate them, and people who don't know/never heard them. Its not Maynards fault the band has to give him the tracks so he can write the lyrics to the music. He said he would like the process to move faster as well but he said the band needs to do things the way they do it and he just has to wait until they are done. He does Puscifer and APC just because he wants to make music and not sit around waiting for the band to produce songs.

There's an ongoing misconception that Maynard is somehow soley responsible for the progress or release of a new album. As I am referring to your comment about him putting out a new A Perfect Circle album. It's really the same process with all of the projects he's involved with. And has mentioned in several interviews that he "waits for the boys to be finished (with the music)" before he does anything. Because as he is only the vocalist... he is admittingly just a piece of the puzzle. Not the sole creator. In his words... "The music always comes first"..

I think there is a video on the ToolArchive channel that makes such a funny video comparison of quotes from interviews of each band member over the years and it's hilarious. Ranging from 2006 to now, all the interviews with the other band members say there is music coming and they're working on it, whereas Maynard is always the one to bust their balls saying things like "They haven't recorded anything" and my favourite "Stop blaming me!" (all of this is amidst the other quotes that say something along the lines of "We're expecting an album next year" - Danny 2013, "We want to start working on an album immediately" - Adam 2008, "There are a good 13 songs ready" Justin 2014).

They make the music. He processes vocals based on the music that come from experiences and emotions he has in life. 10,000 days was about his mother. Sure he went into a dark space and an emotional space to find the words for the music the guys wrote. It must be an interesting process as is for everyone who makes music. Sometimes you have ideas that take years to surface. That's Tool. They do things on their terms, not a record label that demands 3 albums in 5 years. And it's always worth the wait when Tool puts out an album.

Music is a relationship, and there are two main reasons why relationships end: over saturation, and transition. Sometimes there can be too much of a good thing. Sometimes people's tastes or personality evolve past their current artistic proclivities. If you choose to stop listening to something you enjoy for a shallow reason, that is an internal problem that should be rooted out before it comes to destroy other things you care about in your life.

Some people who don't like TOOL just don't get the weird timing in their music. It's pretty complicated, and often takes a few listens to really get it. Then, it clicks, and is amazing (to some). I've been a fan since the mid 90's and when I first heard them, I said "meh" and gave the CD back to my friend. He threw a FIT and made me take it back and give it another chance. I did, and fell in love with it. Still, when I first heard Rosetta Stoned I didn't get it....just sounded like noise. After a few listens, it really grew on me and became one of my favorite TOOL songs.

Started learning to play their music on the piano (lateralus, the grudge, no quarter, pushit, H., schism, wings for marie, etc etc) and even now i am addicted to their music. The reason Tool is so divisive is because they are sort of the hard rock equivalent of jazz. In that, I mean that they are an acquired taste. With acquired tastes you don't just instantly fall in love with them but once you do fall in love with them you can never imagine your life without them. Jazz is the same way in that it doesn't necessarily "appeal" to everyone because it can come across as quite eclectic at first but once it sorta "clicks" with you it just makes you feel that everything else is secondary at best to it.

Back in college (circa 1996) I discovered quite by accident a way to get rid of my party guests without saying a word. Simply changing whatever crowd-pandering 4/4 music I had on to just about any Tool song (all 12 of them out back then ). Flood was my personal room-clearing favorite. I'd let a friend in on the joke and wed watch the show unfold: First off Any Hippies grabbed their poor dogs fled. Then came the drunken confusion of people trying to tap their feet to the odd beat. That morphed into an undercurrent of discomfort no one could seem to identify. Some looked distraught. Usually before Flood ended I only had a few stragglers left, and there was always one who wanted to know what music was on. Ultimately, I met some great people via Tool.

I hate Tool. I can't stand Maynard's voice or delivery style, the songs are bland, melancholy, and unrelatable with lyrics that are faux-philosophical and remind me of a Jordan Petersen fanboy's online ranting. I don't really see anymore pretentiousness in Tool's fanbase than I see in other metal band's fanbases. I think most of the cries of "PRETENTIOUS!!!!!!!!!" come from the fact that Tool is a prog band.
@rudywilliams65388 жыл бұрын
***** They're pretty goddamn prog if you don't listen to songs only on undertow or their really popular songs. The drums are really complex, same with the bass, and the guitar riffs are amazing. Vocals don't matter in prog as far as how proggy(?) a band is, but the vocals are great. Plenty of the time signatures aren't basic 4/4 and the like. Tool isn't even really considered prog. It;'s just that they fit best into prog when compared to other genres.
@rudywilliams65388 жыл бұрын
***** What I'm saying is that they have more prog songs than they have any other subgenre of metal. They're no pink floyd as far as progressiveness goes, but they're not limited to prog and can do whatever they want.

Fear Inoculum has quite a bit different style (every song is very long) but is still 100% tool 10,000 Days is probably the hardest album to listen to all the way through. Tool are unique. They don't belong to a genre. They have one of the greatest vocalists of all time and one of the greatest drummers of all time. Tool have songs that mesmerize the listener. His music has helped me a lot through my most recent and strongest rebirth and spiritual truth or awakening. His music reminds me thru each grid or stage (we are in ascension currently) to stay strong as a lightworker and to remind me that in the end, it will all be okay and to trust in myself, let go of my selfishness, self doubt, insecurities, heal myself the best i can so that i may continue to do a better job as a medicine worker, healer and lightworker and help heal others more along w the earth. i hope everyone may find what music, passion or what their own spiritual truth is so we can all work towards a better world. thank you, Tool!

As much as I love this band, we have to keep in mind that opinions are totally subjective. I had a guy tell me a while back that Nirvana and Cobain are the most overated pieces of musical trash. I didn't respond or snap back because I know he likes different types of music. He was just an idiot. Not because he dissed my musical childhood, but because he beleived that his taste in music was better than mine. He had the mindset of "My band is better than yours and i'm going to tell you that yours is trash because I don't like it." Ignorance, Total idiocy, the kind of negativity that Tool preach about in their music, and as of late, blatantly! "The only enemy is ignorance." Maynard HIMSELF said those words, and it seems like a lot of his fans (and everyday people) aren't understanding this very simple instruction. Friends, don't be so quick to tear down the things that you dislike, but just be accepting towards those who have differing opinions than you. Sorry for the preachy paragraph lmao

Much of the pretentious attitude of their fanbase comes from the music itself, the overuse of polyrhythms, the preachy new age overtones, obsession with ayahuasca. This gives the listener the impression that they're somehow elevated to a higher consciousness, which may be true, but nobody really gives a shit....act like a human and others will treat you with respect. I get the impression these people are confused af so they settle for anything that deviates from convention no matter how sterile or mediocre. They have some good numbers like Reflection but I personally find them a bit monotonous, you can't cling on to something like that without turning into a complete idiot who is out of touch with reality.

I like tool,they're good. But NEUROSIS are a far superior band, with way more albums, much deeper and mysterious lyrical content and they're a whole metric fuck ton heavier than tool. Tool have got 4 albums and I feel there's quite often a bit of filler on them. They have quite a lot of random pointless tracks on their albums and I feel that some of their tracks just aren't really that good. Where as neurosis have 12 albums and most of the songs on these albums are excellent,with minimal filler tracks that are basically just a collection of noises. Also,despite the odd time signatures, that neurosis don't really have, tool are actually very commercial. Where as neurosis are still fairly underground, despite being considered one of the most influential bands of the last 30 years. Like i said,I like tool. I own 3 of their 4 albums (I think undertow is shit)But Neurosis will always be the superior proggy metal band for me, purely based on the consistency of their material and the volume of their back catalogue. Not to mention all the side projects and solo works they do.

I'm a Tool fan, but I could see where they might not be some peoples cup of tea. Music fans in general want to know every little thing about the band they're currently listening to. Tool shy away from being a 'look at me' type of band. In fact they loathe it. So some people tend to think of this as arrogance. I get that. I think there whole goal is all about the music, and a higher sense of consciousness.. Note the see through black curtain on the current tour. And why Maynard isn't out front during a concert. Their deepness and originality can be too much for some. And that's ok. There motto is 'Think For Yourself Question Authority'. Some like it . Some don't. And life rolls on...….

I've been a Tool Fan since the beginning. In response to whether it's metal, industrial or progressive Rock who gives a rats ass. Why do we have to label everything. I hear so many people complaining about the time it takes them to make an album. 1. They each have their personal lives & their own side projects. 2. Tool is not the sort of band who feels the need to pump out albums just for the sake of doing so. 3. These guys are what I call REAL musicians. They have their process for making an album. 4. Tool has been involved in a court battle that has prevented them from recording for at least a couple years. I would bet my left nut that all of those people that complain how long it takes for an album release will be the first ones buying the album & desperately trying to get tickets for their shows after it releases. Lastly it's Mother Fucking Tool! They can and will do whatever they want and we still worship them because they are the last of a dieing breed of musicians! Yes it has been a few years since 10,000 days, and yes MJK has done work with his other projects, to include running a winery in AZ. But seriously, they will release the album when they are good and damn ready! I don't know about everyone else, but I enjoy Tool, and I would happily wait for a solid album to follow up 10,000 days, instead of getting some half ass thrown together to apease the masses pile of garbage that would not even come close to being a Tool album. Did you ever think that maybe the elusiveness is part of the plan? Tool has always been a different band, and never a run of the mill put out a new album every 2-3 years act.

I'm unashamed to admit that I just don't like how TOOL sounds. From a purely instrumental stance, I find most of their songs to be largely interchangeable with one another or just sound downright awful. Many of their songs, as far as I'm concerned, are either all over the place with some tracks barely resembling ITSELF by the end or otherwise sound like they hit the record button while tuning their instruments. Now before I get lynched, here's the strange part. For whatever reason I believe they struck gold with their album AEnima, particularly Forty Six & 2. Make of that what you will. The impression I've gotten about the stereotypical TOOL fan is that they have a deep, borderline sickening, respect for the technical side of music production. I've heard anecdotes claiming that the Fibonacci Sequence was implemented into one of their songs... Okay but if the song sounds like crap then it's hardly impressive. No idea which song it is, and I don't care enough to look it up. So for an uneducated pleb such as myself, these kinds of arguments for why TOOL is great will just flat out not work on me. I just can't stand their style. Maybe they're better live? I'm perfectly willing to admit that it's possible I just need to here them play live. I've changed my mind in the past with other artists for this very reason.

The song is Lateralus, it's actually one of my favorites lol I didn't even find out about the golden ratio thing until today actually since I don't really put too much care into the super nitty-gritty details of music production when I'm listening for enjoyment. It's a pretty cool song but you might not like it if you're not a fan of the stuff he does for Tool, which is okay, everyone has different tastes (have to clarify I'm not an elitist lmao). It's a pretty cool song imo it captures this strange ethereal melody with a drum beat that makes me feel like something is brewing behind the scenes, and words that are humming with slight mystery to something I feel like I know but I've forgotton, it makes me feel nostalgic about dreaming? Idfk is so hard and weird to describe and I'm a weirdo on top of it😂😂😂 The first time I heard it I froze in place and melted into the song and I fell in love with Tool then and there. I originally discovered his band A Perfect Circle (which is probably one of my favorite bands of all time, especially The Thirteenth Step album). Idk if you've listen to the stuff Maynard does with A Perfect Circle or Puscifer, but in case you haven't I thought I'd let you know that those bands exist cause I'm bored and rambling about shit on the internet lol A Perfect Circle does music that's pretty different from Tool, notably in the singing styles in a large portion of the songs (couple of examples being Gravity and 3 Libras [one of my fav fucking songs, it's really pretty and it resonates with some stuff that I've dealt with in the past]) Okay, I think I'm done spewing my bs about this lmao Obviously, I don't expect you to bother looking any of this stuff up, but I'm bored and I felt like babbling on about something I know a little bit about to anyone who will listen 😅😂 But hey, if you ever do decide to check it out, I reccomend listening with headphones or some speaker that has good quality bass (preferably a sub) cause it adds this atmospheric presence to the music somehow, especially with headphones (good ones that is lol)

the only reason, and I mean the ONLY reason to dislike Tool, is because of the wait between the last album and now. But you have to remember they were going through an 8-year lawsuit that was preventing them from writing new material. So Maynard toured with Tool, and worked with his side projects. Tool is in the studio February 2017 recording a new album as we speak...

Ya know what I just got on Twitter today from A Perfect Circle ? News that they all just signed a new record deal with BMG, and announced a new album to be released this year. So it's things like this that frustrate me about Maynard.
@andrewlockett51257 жыл бұрын
Deftones Mike I haven't got quite as many as that. But still sufficient to do a constant full rotation of new ( or newish ) music while waiting for the heavyweight bands to finally release their records. Yes, Tool are a weighty, meaty band, and I don't mean in terms of their sound. They are nowhere near as heavy as most metal groups, they tend to be more restrained, which is probably why their heavier sections carry far more impact than the majority of those others. The juxtaposition in many Tool tracks gives it the impact I find. But too much Tool can be akin to an excess of Texas T-bone steak or similar top shelf stuff. Still gotta have it though! Take care))

who cares if they're not heavy metal or metal! that's what I hate about metal heads sometimes, they go by "if it's not metal I won't listen to it" that's what ive came across most of the time. just because there isn't screaming doesn't mean it's not metal, they're a progressive metal band and they are my favorite band in my opinion
