I purchased a Tacoma 3rd gen last year and opt’d out of the JBL system because I knew I was going aftermarket. That means I didn’t have any OEM amplifiers I had to integrate into or bypass. Plus buying the third gen means I can replace the head unit and get a nice clean signal from the start. Plus the JBL system was packaged with a $5k upgrade I didn’t have to choose. So there is $5k I can spend on doing things right!

I recently had a car declared a total write-off,, of which my dream stereo system was heavily and stealthily integrated into the car (& included in the value of the car on the Insurance Policy). As such I was not permitted (and unable) to uninstall the system in the holding yard post crash.... I reclaimed the purchasing value of the system but alas not the feeling, emotion and effort that went into creating that amazing sound system...

I've been a car audio guy for over 40 years and won some SQ contests back in the day. But now at my age I just buy the premium system (if it's good) and add my own sub. For example, 2020Lexus RX350 with Mark Levinson system, but used a JLAudio 12W6 in a 1" thick 1 cu ft. (well built) sealed prefab enclosure, driven by an AudioControl 800watt amp. tucked below the rear deck. It saves me the hassle of ripping all the panels off the vehicle, running new wiring, and at my age and hearing it is PLENTY good enough for the car. Do I like better quality sound? Sure! But this is a good compromise for me at 64 years of age. Has anyone out there heard a premium factory system where the subwoofer was actually great? And I don't mean it sounds good at a low-moderate volume, I mean sounds good and you can really still feel the bass like with a pretty decent aftermarket solution. If so please let me know!

I messed my low back and leg up so that is likely all I will do in the future as well. I currently have a van with six speakers, tweeter pods, home made crossovers, several runs of power cable and three amplifiers and dual subwoofers but in the future I will probably just run a amp and sub as you mentioned.

@@scose I didn't avoid that, but it wasn't too bad as I didn't have to remove much to set this up in my Lexus. Way less work than changing out a head unit and trying to make it work with all the steering wheel controls and pulling all the interior panels off to change speakers!

If you look at the price difference between the basic audio system and the upgraded system you will be surprised. You could take that same amount of money and purchase aftermarket products that are much better and, in some cases, have money left over.
@jp10873 ай бұрын
Some factory systems are plenty for every day needs. But the thing to think about with an aftermarket sub & amp, or combo, is that it will take up space that you may not want to sacrifice. And in many cases they can actually overpower the rest of the factory system (because they are designed more efficiently and use better products), leading to difficulty with getting the entire system to work well together at all volumes and having to make constant adjustments. If you want something that integrates into the car and saves space like a JL stealth box, those are just as expensive as getting the upgraded sound system from the dealer, plus you need to pay to install those along with adding an external amp. Having someone custom fabricate an integrated sub & box can be costly as well.
@JonathanDFielding3 ай бұрын

Buy once, cry once. I'm still rocking amplifiers I bought in 2005. However the OEMs tend to change things up with regards to speaker sizes so I wasn't able to keep installing those in my new vehicles. Head units and processors are also somewhat disposable as dashboard designs change and new aftermarket features are introduced. Gone are the days where a single DIN stereo could be installed in any new vehicle.

Toss Hybrid on there two. Both platforms have a common issue - the 12-16V circuit is powered by an inverter. The vehicle batteries are often at 240V, meaning the vehicle inverter places a current maximum on the 12-16V part of the vehicle, giving you a wattage ceiling for your design.

the range in vehicles that sound good by adding just a subwoofer is slowly shrinking. complicated factory audio outputs are starting to make integration much more expensive. BUT people are still slowly allowing themselves to pay the extra money needed for the proper parts and we're still doing our jobs :) i especially love it when i get some "high end" bmw or even a range rover that DOESNT have ANC or injected exhaust noise into the audio, and when you add a sub, it works as intended! thats not true for most GM, Ford, or Dodge though.... I have a base model Golf Alltrack, which doesn’t come with the “premium” Fender audio. I built a sealed box perfectly spec’ed for a an Alpine W series sub. It fits perfectly between the spare tire and the load floor so there is no lost space and it is hidden. It sounds a lot better and hits way harder than the Fender optioned cars. I already had an amplifier, so the whole thing cost me 200 bucks. Building your own box, if you have the ability, is cheaper and better than even one of those loaded sub boxes.

Thoughts: could you effectively ADD some bracing (think thick styrene glued in place with CA glue or a stong yet semi flexible construction adhesive) and also use Dynamat sound deadening material to reduce resonance and flex on the cheap plastic sub boxes? Factory premium is a godsend tho compared to standard, especially on the older vehicles, where that "few hundred watts" is massively larger than the maybe 50-80 watts the non premium uses. Even aftermarket head units only improves the sound on the stock older truck speakers, and those are only running 14-25w/ channel... So factory premium on say 200w is at least double the power over that. That being said, my stock normal system is not bad on my 22 Durango, it just needs more of the deep bass. Midbass isnt bad, but lacks yhe deep punch below 50hz to match the good sounding mids and highs, so yeah, just adding an aftermarket sub would be good for me in this instance, however I feel the factory premium would be enough for me on this vehicle. My project 96 Ram tho is getting a custom stealth pirted box with an Alpine type S 12 and type S coaxial/triaxial panel and door speakers, and will run off a 5 channel 1000w RMS Pioneer amp.

You are assuming that the after market solution will be installed by a competent professional. Factory will be the best the factory can install. Which may or may not be good. But you can test it before buying. It's balanced correctly, it's tuned correctly, it's insulated and dampened correctly. etc. As for after market, who knows? Maybe you just throw it in the back and connect the wires and call it done. Which is not even close to good. I have 2 cars with the best sound system from the manufacturer. Volvo with Harman Kardin and Chevy with bose. The volvo is the best sound system I've heard. I also have been building systems since the 1990s. I have a custom install in my supra. Which is close to the vovlo. But the volvo, package I bought, polestar, only came with that option. So it wasn't really a question of do I want to do it myself. Same with the chevy, high country, only came with that sound system. I bought those packages mainly for the vehicle build not necessarily for the stereo. Even though I've since upgraded the head unit in the chevy. Idk, do you just want it done or are you wanting to be particular in choosing a custom solution.

In 2024. If your not happy with the best factory sound in a new vehicle standard or premium. Easiest thing to do is upgrade door speaker's to a good aftermarket brand hell they Have 8" shallow mount subs that hit like some old school 12s and very small amplifiers that crank out the watts on low voltage. Most you can plug and play on door speaker's and not need a amplifier or if you do small and easily done without any loss of space. And if you want to really throw some bang in it look up skar audio 8s costume boxs for your vehicle. I have 4 8" skar subs in box under back seat of a 2021 f150 xlt 4 door and a skar 2000w rms amplifier with factory premium door speaker's and 4 tweets aftermarket and it shakes the mirrors so hard you cant see out of them and nothing stays in cup holders or loose anywhere in truck. It's crazy how hard they hit box subs amp and tweets all for around 1300$ on factory screen/deck and it's more than most people would ever want or handle. Them sub/amp combination deals are trash. And not all Kenwood or RF or pioneer are equal knock off come a dime a dozen and most brands over rate the spec's of the product hugely as far as max watt or RMS watt goes and if its paper cones small magnets low Xmax and max watts its probably trash just being honest.

I need answers!! Been a fan of you since the early 2014 but i got a really important question about amp and sub. I have an extra 4 channel amplifier and i want to put it to good use since my component and coaxial speakers are all powered by a dsp+amp. How do i make my 4 channel amp become a bridge connection for my 10" subwoofer? Im assuming that would give half of the impedance which can give more power to my sub. Im confused on the terminals and im afraid to just carelessly do it without confirmation. The amp has a symbol of mono connection on channel 1 and channel 2 and another symbol for the connection channel 3 and channel 4. How do i do this? Really appreciate your response in advance, love you man ❤
3 ай бұрын
You can't bridge a four channel amp to one channel. You can bridge channels 1 and 2 and/or channels 3 and 4. So it can be used as a 4, 3 or 2 channel amp. If you want to use all of the amp for one sub, you need a double voice coil one. But if it's single voice coil, you can only use one half of the amp.

That really depends. Some manufacturers allow for a lot of adjustability on their factory systems. Others you can only adjust bass, mid, and high and you really have no idea what frequencies are included in those settings. I had a factory Bose system in my Yukon that sounded horrible until I upgraded the head unit and speakers. However the 9 speaker factory Bose system in my 2011 Altima sounds amazing and provides a lot of clear deep bass. More than enough to rock and rattle the trunk when I want to. I had a Hyundai minivan with an Infinity surround system with DVD. That was one of the most clear sounding factory systems I ever had. I recently rented a brand new Ford F150 with the upgraded B&O sound system, and it was just ok.

@jp10873 ай бұрын
Absolutely. Manufacturers will look for any reason to get out of a warranty. I had a Ford Focus where I was getting a crackling sound from the door speaker on the driver side. So I figured maybe it was blown, and I upgraded all of the speakers with direct replacement coaxials from Memphis. Simple plug & play install. When the sound persisted, I took it to the Ford dealership since it was still under warranty, thinking maybe it was bad wiring or a bad channel on the head unit, and they found that the wires were getting pinched/damaged where they go through the grommet into the door. They refused to fix it despite acknowledging it was a wiring problem having nothing to do with the speakers. But since I had made a change to the audio system, it was no longer warrantable.

The "Premium Audio" that comes with most higher trim levels is usually not that different than your lower level trims. It may just be a name brand that you've heard in the past and liked. Keep in mind what Mark points out when it comes to the costs of the outsourced components. You will definitely be getting a lower tier of whatever that premium brand really is if it is stock on your "Premium Audio System". I have had vehicles with these radios and I'll be honest that I haven't been impressed yet. Don't pay that extra amount of money for the premium audio. Instead, use the money you saved from not getting it to install a system that is specific to your likes (your preference of what frequencies you like, whether high and/or low). Most stock systems will be very flat, so to speak. Make sure that you consult someone that knows car audio well and can help you make a better decision on your investment. Just try not to go to a shop. I would recommend going to a bass meet where you will find most people there know car audio well an won't try to sell you something because of the commission they will make off of your purchase. I feel that they will genuinely help you and point you in the right direction. I say this as I have helped individuals in the past and have seen them soon after living their new audio installs. As far as sourcing the audio gear. Crutchfield is a great company but pricy. I would recommend a wholesale audio warehouse or a audio auction. These are some of the best places to get great deals and keep some money in your pocket. The only downside is that you will have no warranty against manufacturer defects. The pro outweighs the con by a landslide. Most people blow their speakers anyways. That is not manufacturer defect. That is either user and/or installer defect. Manufacturers won't cover blown speakers because you have them too much power. With that being said, if the installer knows what they are doing. I wouldn't worry about it. I hope my input helps some make a better choice when it comes to this subject. Have a great week. Be safe and let's get loud and LOWWW!!!
