If it is like liberal San Francisco, there are lots of rules/laws nowadays there and so lots of signs posted reminding you don't do this or that. I find freedom, real freedom, the feeling of freedom, is felt in developing world countries. In the developing world, they don't post very many signs and amazingly the people still don't act like animals. Liberal, but other than your sex life, they want to rule your life otherwise. I lived in SF - never again - "felt" more like a prison even while beautiful, clean, cold, raining, just like Amsterdam.

Yeah, language is a big thing. I came to NL in the beginning of September and this far have experienced how lazy Dutch folks are when it comes to speaking English (which is not my first language, so I'm pretty much breaking my brain as well,when speaking foreign language all the time)...It might be, that big, top cities offers different experience, but smaller ones are like another world. Somebody even told me, that Amsterdam is really all for tourists instead of locals..do you see it so as well?
@ebizfacts8 жыл бұрын
+AD That hasn't been my experience at all. I've never known Dutch people to be lazy about speaking English. For non-native speakers they seem willing and able to speak it all the time with me. As for the touristy thing, once you're outside of Centrum there are a lot less about.
@elsjesweeney8 жыл бұрын
Amsterdam has one of the highest percentage of English speakers (first, second, or third language) among all the cities in Europe. It's VERY rare to find a Dutch person that doesn't speak English at an above average level.

Don't know if you can answer this, but do you believe people there are welcoming to Americans? Black Americans? I have heard that it's hard to get a job if you're not young. They say they let the older workers go after their contract is up to hire younger workers. The guy that put this info out was basically saying that Amsterdam is a place for young people.
@SmokeMyBlunt6 жыл бұрын
People are very open to Americans ( Some big celebritys from your country even have houses in Amsterdam and visit regularly ),no exception to black Americans,it counts for all the big citys.They'l even accept you if you're purple.We have lots of people living here from Suriname and the Antillen.When it comes to getting work they usually do rather hire someone younger than someone who's older but that all depends on the job youre looking for and the diploma's you own.

We just visited Amsterdam as part of a three country European Tour which included Nijmegen, Rotterdam, The Delta Works, Kinderdijk and Keukenhof Gardens in The Netherlands as well as several beautiful cities and towns in Belgium and Paris, France. I was impressed by everything I saw and experienced but my favorite place was Amsterdam... for all the reasons you listed and more! I will remember that trip for as long as I live! You are so right! Amsterdam is indeed one of the most uniquely beautiful places I've ever seen and one of the friendliest too. It was like being in the middle of a storybook everywhere I looked! It most certainly ranks as the most liberal place I've had the pleasure of visiting and I wish everywhere was so sensible! I even got separated from my group and was lost for a few hours. Though I was a bit afraid, I managed to find my way back to the hotel and that experience was actually one of the best experiences of my life! There are far worse places on Earth to get lost in than Amsterdam!

You get a like because your are likeable and i was in Amsterdam a week ago and totally fell in love with the place.Having lived in New York and london,Amsterdam has now moved into the the number 1 spot.It is a kind of utopia as far as i`m concerned and i won`t hear anything bad said about the place.I`m a Dubliner so the first thing i thought i noticed is the place has no difficult shadows,i mean the people of course.Simple,direct,pragmatic and chilled.Being in a very beautiful place where every turn of the head is met with an even richer vision,has to have an effect on people.I don`t love Dublin and never have..i make no apologies.The old sow that eats her farrow is still doing her thing and is still full of resentment and small mindedness. Now i have to put plan Amsterdam into action..that is really going to take some ingenuity.

That really is only Amsterdam and basically any capital city. The rudeness is nothing compared to New York or London too. And a lot of tourists in Amsterdam disrespect the place intentionally and unintentionally sadly (like always walking on the bike lanes or getting really drunk or high.) So I get why they would be annoyedby that. But I highly recommend you to look outside of Amsterdam and visit other big cities! Like Arnhem, Nijmegen, Maastricht, Utrecht etc. :)

Is Amsterdam friendly to longboards? Specifically electric longboards as a way to commute?
@Repsforjesus677 жыл бұрын
Alan Gebhardtsbauer Yes, remember bicycles are very popular in Amsterdam (and the entire Netherlands), so they designed every road to come with a little bike lane next to it. You could easily ride on there, or on the sidewalk. Also, The Netherlands is a very flat country with little hills, hence biking is so popular. This is ofcourse convinient for longboards. I have heard that boosted boards are forbidden, not sure if it's true, but I'm sure the police won't give you a ticket right away.

7. Diverse population - That is a city at war with each other. Don't believe me? Read the newspapers of major cities where diversity exists and where it doesn't - completely different stories. There is nothing to fight about where there is no or very little diversity. I used to love diversity, but when you notice the peace within places that have very little of it, well, you begin to raise an eyebrow. Yeah, I know, not a very politically correct thing to say, but you said you didn't know much about politics so you shouldn't mind. They always say, diversity is great so few question it. Take care, I enjoyed your youtube, funny!
@BrendonChase_20158 жыл бұрын
Diversity in and of itself has never been a problem in Amsterdam. However, there are quite a few neighbourhoods in Amsterdam where devotees of "the religion of peace" have made sure that their own views on "diversity" and tolerance are properly enforced. In some areas, it's now no longer safe for a woman to go about in Western-style clothing, to name just one milder symptom of the peaceful monoculture in some Amsterdam neighbourhoods. These places never get mentioned, perhaps because they don't fit the laid back and genuinely enjoyable aspect of our city. I'm Duth, lived there for about fifteen years, and decided to move out of Amsterdam, because the trend I described is not all that promising. At all. Oh and DtR, great vid man, keep it up!
@doctoroesperanto36637 жыл бұрын
In the city center, 'diversity' only manifests itself in the shops and restaurants. There is a short documentary on the RT youtube channel called something like Amsterdam with something like the babel tower. It shows how 'diverse' parts of the city like Bos en Lommer are.

Well, for that we have invented villages. Cities are sources of energy, new ideas. With that belongs diversity a little chaos and (peacefull) conflicts of different ideas. No judgement, I am older now and don't like to live in major cities anymore. That has more to do with traffic jams and 24 hour noise than with the diversity of the population. I like having different kind of people around me, if all where just copies of myself it would be boring.
