If you're curious, here's a general-purpose copy of my resume that you can look at: thomasjfrank.com/locker/Thomas%20Frank%201-page%20Resume.pdf Since I'm not applying for any specific job, it's not tailored and the experience is in (roughly) chronological order - which isn't necessarily the best order, as the video points out. However, you might find the accomplishment descriptions and formatting to be useful as examples. If you have other career questions, let me know about them! I want to start mixing in videos like this amongst the academic/productivity videos, as I think this topic is needed too.

I don't consider myself Lazy but I'm 47 yrs old and have little time on my hands to keep up with One resume, much less individual ones for every position.. It's ridiculous this is what the hiring PR are so interested in vs face to face meetings to find the Right fit for the position.. When I was seeking employees I wanted to meet them personally because if their attitude wasn't up to par their skills nor their fluffed up resume didn't mean a dern thing to me or my Boss. js to much emphasis is placed on the wrong things these days in "hiring"

I'm speaking for EU 🇪🇺 area. This video is useful for the cover letter, you point out your best skills for the position, language skills, your motivation for work...and when you are available to start the position, maybe you are employed right now and you are looking for a new job and you have 60 days before ending your old job posting and start a new one... Yes you can negotiate to shorten it, but not always... And usually it is expected to send the CV in the form of Europass along with the cover letter or email.

These are great tips, delivered very effectively! I agree wholeheartedly that a strong work ethic and solid problem-solving ability can trump a lot of skills that can be learnt on the job. However, I disagree with the assessment that "flipping burgers" or overall experience in hospitality should not be highlighted. I work with highly motivated young adults who have not completed a college degree. Many of them came from backgrounds that have taught them invaluable lessons regarding grit, perseverance and problem-solving. In addition, many have experience working in restaurants or retail, with skills that easily transfer to the financial or customer service field in general. Bottom line: do not dismiss these jobs - skills are transferable!

Is there a difference in how they're laid out? I was reading that a CV is usually much longer and almost always chronological, but I'm not sure if that's always true since many countries use the term "CV".
@trime5476 жыл бұрын
*+Thomas Frank* It's heavily dependent on the standards practiced in the given country. In most countries in Europe, it is the standard to place your job experiences in a chronological order, but no serious employer would ever look down on you listing the more important experiences first. The best CV is still, just as a resume, as short as possible, but it's common practice to add a short few-liner description of who you are and why you are the man for the job, a prequel to the application, if you wish.

He's totally right about the unpaid work experience. I did a year long unpaid mission trip, put it at the top of my resume and got hired as a team leader at a nonprofit when I got back. Just because it was unpaid doesn't mean it wasn't valuable work experience. Plus, if you had to fundraise for all your living expenses, that is one big clue to your level of passion and work ethic to a recruiter (just remind them that this is something you did.)

What enables you to do this? - What do you want them to do after reading your application? Interested in any other free position? 5. Check emails regularly.
