The Vast of Night is probably the closest anyone has come in the last 50 years to replicating the original The Twilight Zone in tone, dialog, and atmosphere. It's crazy to think that it was the director's first film.

i can absolutely relate to the "being a father" thing. when i became a father all of a sudden i couldn't bear children get hurt or experiencing bad things, neither in film nor in books. before having a kid it didn't hit me in that way. to me children were juist like every other people, but being a father added another layer to how i experience stories.

I know some folks complained about its slower pace, and its ambiguous and sort of abrupt ending (to each their own of course), but for me this is a perfect film. The writing, the casting, the directing, the performances, the cinematography, and the MUSIC (seriously, it's one of the most haunting and mesmerizing soundtracks I've ever heard). I think time will treat this film very kindly. It's absolutely one of my all-time faves.

Endless is great. But Spring is Benson-Moorehead’s masterpiece. If you like them they produced After Midnight as well. There is also the Perry Blackshear movies “they look like people” “The Siren” and “When I Consume You” all excellent Sci Fi movies.
@tunguskalumberjack9987

If you’re unaware, the duo of Benson and Moorhead have some other films that are related to The Endless, and they are excellent as well. Resolution takes place in the same area as The Endless, has a few other recurring characters, and B & M have a cameo as the same characters, but before they left the cult. It’s a weird horror film that has the same feel as the other, and it’s super. Also, their movie Spring starts out very close to the area of the other two films, and one of the two stars of Resolution owns the bar that this film’s protagonist works at. He also mentions another of the characters from the other two films, the illustrious “Shitty Carl”😆. They also direct and star in Something In The Dirt, which is currently in the Sci-fi section of Hulu. I really enjoyed it, and if you enjoy their other stuff, you will probably like it. They also wrote and directed one of the segments in VHS: Viral (the one with the skateboarders), and they directed a couple of episodes of the Netflix limited series Archive 81, which is also very good. And finally, they wrote and directed Synchronic, starring Anthony Mackie- and unsurprisingly, it also is quite good. It seems like everything they work on or create is gold- I’m so happy that they’re young, creative, and busy, because I think they’ll keep coming out with great projects. Afterthought- I just remembered one more- Justin Benson is in the movie After Midnight, which is still on Hulu and some other places. I don’t know if they wrote, directed, or anything else, but Benson is a great character as the policeman friend of the movies main characters. It’s surprisingly a great movie, and it blew me away the first time I saw it. It’s weird in a different way, as the story progresses, more and more of what’s really been going on is revealed- until the last 15 or 20 minutes, which I actually got teary at how sweet a moment was, and- well, I won’t spoil it for you. It’s totally worth watching. Sorry that this got so long, but I love their films, and if I can lead someone who likes The Endless to some more of their work that they didn’t know about, then I’m more than happy to do so. I hope that I shined a light on something new for you!
@sleepinggorilla
@sleepinggorilla 14 күн бұрын
@@tunguskalumberjack9987 After Midnight was written, directed, and starred Jeremy Gardner. Benson and Moorehead produced it. Endless, Resurrection, Synchronic, Spring, and Something in the Dirt are all connected by a flower that grows around a lake in Southern California. An elder being lives in the lake and has been messing with the characters in the different films.

I did see both TESTAMENT and THREADS back in the day (THE DAY AFTER too). As a child of the '60s who did the "duck and cover" nonsense, and in my 20s for the gung-ho Reagan, whom I thought would get us into a nuclear war (tho' turns out he also saw THE DAY AFTER, and when he asked his military advisors about its authenticity, decided to talk to Gorbachev). My first one-act play ('82), written in college, took place in a bomb shelter, and my last college film ('84) started with unidentified nuclear explosions (borrowed footage), and two survivors.

Threads was horrendous. I was 16 when I watched it, alone, in an upstairs room in my parent's house, on a small TV. I watched, stunned, speechless, for the whole run time, and on the final scene, with the horror of what was depicted, sobbed. I remember every moment. We need more brave drama, not the saccharin drivel we have now.

Same. I was 11 or 12. I had sleepwalking nightmares for weeks afterwards. I can remember that feeling, the absolute despair as, in my nightmare, I walked around our street and home looking for people but finding the world to be completely uninhabited. Apparently, I would walk into my parents' bedroom muttering "everyone's gone, the world is empty". They couldn't wake me up properly. I was weeping. And now we have American liberals saying troubling things about nuclear war, downplaying how appalling it would be. It's outrageous. They need to watch "Threads". Cheers. Take care.

"Threads" is absolutely MUST-SEE. Yes, you will be scarred. I grew up in the '80s but hadn't seen it until a few years ago, and I had no idea how horrific a nuclear war could be. Being killed by the bomb would be merciful compared to what follows for anyone who survives. "Threads" is unique in its approach because while it is definitely a drama, there are also on-screen explanatory cards giving the science behind each phase.

When The Wind Blows should be a companion to Threads, and The Day After. Each have unique takes on the subject, with When The Wind Blows an animated film, about a couple in the English countryside. They hear about the pending Nuclear strike, then because of how little they really know about how it works, spend most of their remaining moments arguing, and trying to figure out the best way to prepare, after the strike, all while the radiation starts taking its toll, as it’s killing them. The Day After used to be known as the U.S. version of Threads, though one isn’t a remake of the other, and are just as different as the societies shown in the films. Nicholas Meyer directed it right after Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khaaaaan!!! …. Khaaaaan!!

I appreciate a horror film list that doesn't draw from the deep pool of slasher, monster, gross-out horror for which U S. audiences somehow developed a predilection. Perhaps that is our corollary that followed the Vietnam war in the way that Japan's monster and trippy horror films (like Tetsuo: The Iron Man) followed WW2. A horrific war linked to shared guilt that led to horrific ideations playing out across the national psyche.

You're right about Testament. I was away for work for a few days while my wife and two kids were back at home. I watched Testament in my hotel room and had to call home immediately. My wife told me I was foolish to be watching that alone and away from the kids. Touched me to the core and some images still terrify me like the peanut butter on the cracker or the blood oozing onto the towel. Then that dam black and white film footage as someone passed on. Science Fiction horror (AKA cosmic horror) is a great genre and perhaps my favorite. The idea that or lives are insignificant and can be blinked out in less than a second is a notion that dates from the earliest days of science fiction and even predates it when you consider "naturalist" fiction from the late 19th century.

Hah, nevermind TV, some of us saw "Threads" _in school_ here in the UK - different times :). "The War Game" from 1966 is a similar idea - a nuclear attack on the UK - but it's a faux-documentary. Worth a look for interest but also not exactly a fun watch (at the time it was deemed too disturbing for broadcast by the BBC so only played in select cinemas). (then there was "When the Wind Blows", a graphic novel that we read in late primary school - middle school in the US maybe ? We'd have been about 10 - and then a couple of years later, we read "Z for Zachariah" - lot of nuclear war stuff in UK schools in the 80s... can't for the life of me think why :)

Threads disturbed me unlike any other film I've ever seen. I only just saw it about a year ago. I've been dragging my feet on watching it because of its reputation for being so disturbing and I had to be in the right frame of mind to watch something like this. When I spotted it on KZbin I thought that it was time. Very few films I've had to watch incrementally. I would watch about thirty minutes or so and have to step back for a day before continuing onward. This isn't some Mad Max scenario where despite the collapse of civilization following some catastrophic event where life goes on in some manner but a grim picture of what might befall humanity should this happen and the regression to more primitive state of survival. The effects of the film lingered for days afterwards. I never had any need to watch it again. It probably won't have the same effect but I feel that once is more than enough. Testament is the direct opposite of Treads and The Day After but no less bleak in its depictions of what a nuclear attack would have on those who "survive" the initial attack. There are no gruesome scenes of people being vaporized or cities being laid to waste. We watch as the town and its citizens slowly and quietly die. The effect is no less devastating as the other two films. The most heartbreaking moment is when the daughter asks her mother what sex is like, knowing that she'll never experience it. I just pray that no generation ever has to live through these events.

I guess I thought it might be a bit too obnoxiously "hipstery" from from what I initially saw 😂 but it definitely wasn't. Might check out those two Scandinavian ones but idk about the last 2. Although it's pretty interesting to see that things like that came out as tv movies back at a time when tv wasn't exactly known for "prestige"

Ummmm, Hatching isn't remotely sci-fi--it's just an extended metaphor for teenage issues. But that's irrelevant--the movie is just freaking amazing! The monster birdo was _so_ well-designed and brought to life perfectly with practical effects!! I'm glad to see someone other than me knows of this wonderful film. I recommend it to literally everyone I know! And I just adore The Vast of Night! It feels like a classic 1950s Ray Bradbury or Richard Matheson story brought to life. Another one of those films I recommend to everyone, even if they don't like sci-fi. I also universally recommend Threads, but only because I love destroying my friends' happiness. That and The Day After after probably the two most depressing, hopeless films ever made. They even outstrip The Road, because even The Road at least offers a microscopic amount of hope at the end. Not Threads or The Day After. They just expose you to lethal amounts of depression and then let you waste away.

Hatching - Never heard of this one. Looks cool! The Vast of Night - I remember this one as being a fun movie (just realized the radio station is "WOTW"?!?) The Innocents - A really good movie! Threads and Testament - Given the state and direction of the world today, these are just a big "nope!" from me. Sorry! Check back in five or so years.

seeing as I also have a son with some difficulties.... probably close in age ... I uh... no I don't think I will be watching Testament. and to an extent this applies to Threads. I have discovered since his birth that I am really triggered by "Children in (really) bad situations". Movies I at least can compartmentalize. Real stuff will consume my emotions though. I've never been so consistently and viscerally reactive to something before.

Thank you for another great video. 🙂 In the UK, the amount of horrific things on TV in the 70s and 80s was ridiculous, the horrifying public safety films, even children's TV was not spared. 😱😱A great series of books have been written about it called Scarred for Life, the writers also have hosted many talks about it, kzbin.info/www/bejne/qKCcioJon614gZY

Threads is trash. It can't decide whether it wants to be a movie or a documentary. It twice uses the trope of focusing on a pregnant woman to heighten the sense of helplessness rather than actually demonstrate the hopelessness of the situation for people in general. It repeatedly uses shots of fake burned bodies to represent the devastation, ignoring most of the landscape.

That was the whole point; it was meant to be a film in a documentary style so that people would recognise that this wasn't removed from their lives but could happen within about 4 minutes, at any time, to any of them, & there was no escape. It's how you keep a lid on jingoistic warmongering sabre rattling nonsense when the stakes are so high.
