What about installing a tank heater, to warm and circulate the coolant throughout the engine block and cooling system? Or, if it can be done safely, placing a small portable heater in the car's cabin overnight to help keep ice & snow from building-up on the roof & windows, and warm the interior?

Unless your got an older Jeep Wrangler that still has a good heater core. The defrosters on those babies are magic. Once the thermostat starts opening they blow heat and the fact that those older jeeps had flat windshields makes them quicker to defrost. Within minutes the packed ice starts melting away from the windshield.

@davideats9255
@davideats9255 5 жыл бұрын
Remote starter's are nice for getting into a warm car but they aren't very good for your engine. Idling upon startup for anything longer than a minute in freezing temperatures is very hard on modern engines. The best way way to warm them up is to get them on the road and apply some throttle. So dress warm and save your money for something other than a remote start system.

Don't gun it!!! It's okay to drive it conservatively until it reaches normal operating temperature but don't hop in and floor it. I personally don't warm my car up as modern cars really don't require a warm up period, I just give it a few seconds to build oil pressure and baby it until the temp gauge starts to climb and everything quites down.
@USAFTACP
@USAFTACP 5 жыл бұрын
001 002 warming in the general sense is for carburated vehicles for the fuel air mixture rate. Modern cars automatically adjust fuel delivery on the fly, negating the need to warm up the engine.
@EricFortuneJr.
@EricFortuneJr. 5 жыл бұрын
001 002 On some really cold mornings the engine oil is more viscous and doesn’t flow as good, it settles over night so it’s best not to floor it. It works best at operating temperature, notice how much quieter your engine runs after it’s warmed up good vs a really cold start. It’s fine to drive it cold as long as you don’t dog it out and this is assuming you’re using the correct viscosity, 5w20 0w20 5w30 etc...

I don't think you mentioned if you're in a snowy area to turn the wipers OFF before turning the engine off. If you shut off the engine mid-stroke and the wipers seize to the glass, when you start the engine the wipers will still be ON even if switched off. The wipers are only completely off when the arms are back to their rest points.

@sct913
@sct913 5 жыл бұрын
@@muumuumu This is another thing I see a lot in the winter months, and one that potentially causes more severe problems than leaving the blades on the windshield. You run the risk of the arms freezing in the maintenance position if you have a steady rain that turns into a flash freeze. If that happens, your defroster won't help at all - unlike if the blades freeze to the windshield.

Apply a coat or two of RainX on your windows right before winter starts...makes scraping off ice a lot easier. I'm surprised there was no mention of winter tires. If you live in the snow belt, get a set mounted on their own steel rims so you can easily swap them in/out. FACT: a FWD car with a set of snow tires has better traction than a 4WD car with all-seasons.
@Billy123bobzzz
@Billy123bobzzz 5 жыл бұрын
Both of those are true. I found that Rain-X works and I even use Rain-X windshield washer fluid which helps to maintain the coating. I just watched a video on KZbin last week comparing the two and the front wheel drive Camry with snow tires completely embarrassed the four wheel drive Audi because the Audi only has all season tires, that poor Audi could barely move in the deep snow or in the ice.
@guitfiddle
@guitfiddle 5 жыл бұрын
You are correct. I just bought an 04 matrix AWD that came with summer tires (in MN). My FWD Sienna and 04 focus have way better traction than the matrix (all season and winter tires). The worst part is braking. It takes off just fine but you can't stop on ice at all.

@@guitfiddle I know! LOL When the Prius first came out all the owners used to chat a lot about their new hybrid experiences, the one person that entertained me the most was a young man in Colorado who put high quality snow tires on his brand new Prius and was out driving all the 4x4s in his town, there was almost a story each day of how he got out of snow that got everyone else stuck or how he stopped by the side of the road to give a ride to the 4X4 pickups that got stuck each day, it was hilarious. I don't care what they say, I have several high mileage vehicles that I warm up before I drive them, until they're buying my cars for me and paying repair bills they have no damn say in how I treat my vehicles and you can easily damage all sorts of stuff jumping in a cold vehicle and driving off like a bat out of hell as many people do...but since many never keep their car longer than a year or 2 anymore they'll never have any idea what the damage is by doing so.

What Scotty doesn't realize while he lives in warm Houston, Texas, is that many times people here in the north have their wipers on while shutting their cars off in the winter because of snow. Then when going to start the car the next day after a good freeze the wipers have no choice but to move whether the wipers are turned on or off. The best thing would be to remember to shut the wipers off before turning it off each time in the winter (my memory sucks, though).

Grew up in the Northeast and lived in the snowmelt Midwest for Weill over 75% of my life and believe it or not I learned more about winter driving and evicted preparation tips in the five years down in North TX. I still travel to the mid Atlantic and some parts of the snow belt so still good refreshers. Thanks Scotty!! The straight water trick can be good for water pump or cooling system components can be good for troubleshooting but just that. I use straight water to do a ops/leak check after installation. Just remember to drain the water right away while it is still fairly warm and flows better. Replace with coolant after that and then do the air bleeding procedure. The disadvantage to the water is that it is clear so a leak might not be as easily detected. The Coolant even if dirty should have a contrasting color background to make leaks easier to detec.

As a trucking company maintenance manager I knew to make sure tires were inflated when cold but not freezing. Checking tire pressure when freezing can cause valve stems to freeze open. I also had to check and let air out of tires after winter because the trucks would go to Texas and the the tires would blow by being over-inflated. After winter in Arizona it was common to hear parked trailer tires blow while just sitting in large drop lots.

….. you can also install a relatively inexpensive ' battery blanket '. I've got the plug for my battery blanket under the hood right next to the block heater plug and I connect both of them before I go anywhere in the winter. That way, both your engine and your battery are warm and your car will start like a champion.

Got an on at 32 F, off at 35 F device, Can put a heater in the car (properly protected from causing a fire) and plug it in overnight. The snow/ice that might accumulate just pushes off because its not frozen to the glass. A couple of the 12V heater units meant to be put on the dash, 12V power supply and the controller between power supply and the house (but inside the car)

I've used cold water to unfreeze the wipers. Hot water can break the windshield but cold water will free the wipers to get them going if you use enough of it. They may refreeze in short order but it's enough to get them started.

I just put cardboard under the wipers, and if it's big enough, it'll cover up the entire windshield. If it snows, or if it freezes, I just remove the cardboard and it's like nothing happened. It'll spare you a lot of time cleaning or waiting for it to defrost.

Scotty I put a big piece of cardboard on my windshield in the winter ! Turn wipers on , shut the car off on the down ward stroke , turn wipers off , turn defrosters on high ! Now put cardboard behind wipers and go to bed . In morning hit remote starter and when you are ready to leave put cardboard in back seat , it will dry out and be fine ! This also works on back window if it has a wiper . The best things are when the season is over , no storage it recyclable and it’s FREE ! I’m from UPSTATE NY and did this for many years !

When my wipers freeze to the windshield I pour WARM water from the faucet on them and it frees them instantly and does not crack your glass. Yes boiling water is a BAD idea like he said. Turning your faucet on and let the water warm up, fill up a cup and pour it strait on the wipers won't hurt your glass. I've been doing it for years in Wisconsin. My 2013 4Runner has a "wiper heater/defroster" button. It heats the glass up directly below the wipers. It's awesome!

If you want your car defrost to warm up quicker, Dont turn the blower up to high, cools the antifreeze as its trying to warm up. Low fan will warm up faster, then turn to high once its warmed up. Works way better! 👍

Couple more things: Keep at least half tank of fuel, especially diesels, prevents condensation freeze. If you local area uses salt on road in freezing temperatures, don't keep your car in warm garage, salt will eat you car. WINTER TIRES! Clean your roof from snow, icicles from your roof can damage car behind you.

Arnoldas Sarnauskas Keep your car in a garage regardless of the salt. For the amount of wear and tear on other parts of the body, engine, in and around the car it's better in the long run than a bit of salt erosion. Got to weigh out the pluses and minuses and garage is a WINNER BY FAR!

I've heard this many times, it works until one year the windshield just cracks anyway. It turns out that you are creating hundreds of tiny surface cracks in the windshield that are just waiting for an extra cold day to crack on your when you pour that arm water on it (keep in mind that am water can be 75 to 100 degrees hotter than the windshield is and yet still feel to be inly warm to us. Those hundreds of microscopic cracks are just waiting for something to impact the windshield to shatter apart, when it would have otherwise held up to protect you.
