With pre-AF turned on the camera will be constantly trying to focus the entire time it is turned on. Even if you're walking along with it on your shoulder strap and not aiming or pressing or half-pressing the shutter. It would be a battery drain and something I don't see why anyone would want.

I recently switched from Canon to Sony.......the a7 IV to be exact. Yes, the multitude of menu options on the a7 are quite overwhelming. Although I was somewhat familiar with Sony's menu interface (have owned a Sony RX100 III for several years), the options on this Mk IV are like trying to learn all the instruments, dials, switches, levers and controls in the cockpit of a Boeing 747! It's bad enough trying to become familiar with the "default" settings without getting into making custom settings and then trying to remember not only the really important settings but then, trying to remember and access a bunch of "custom settings"! I will bookmark this video for future reference but for now the only change I want to make (but isn't covered in this tutorial) is to be able to change the AEL button so that I can switch into and out of Spot Metering with a press of the AEL button. Thanks for sharing your knowledge with the community my friend.

I shifted from Nikon to Sony not long ago. Initially, the menu in the A7IV was a bit overwhelming. However, as you said Majic, once you find the features that work best for you, throw them all into a custom menu and everything is simplified. Then do the custom button set up and the A7IV becomes a super efficient tool. Moving to Sony has really changed the way I shoot, and for the better.

for e-curtain.. why not just use electronic shutter instead? and mechanical/electronical shutter can be assigned to button. I use electronic shutter 90percent of time and just switch to mechanical in artificial light or fast movement.

Magic, this is a great video for sure. Thank you. I modified 1 or 2 slightly but real good advice. I also plan to put these on my extra MyMenu I wasn’t using except for the Focus Color which I think I will just set and forget. Already had EFCS on a MyMenu page but recommend putting Shutter Type there as well. So shutter type, EFCS, an AF Tracking Sensitivity were already on my MyMenu 1 page on both my A7IV and A7RV. Now I need to go look at my A1. Now I will go back and look at your other video.

Aperture drive in AF is a stunning revelation! I'm an old guy and in the day, I remember the "stop-down-metering" lever on my old Canon FD lenses. Similar functionality but now with AF, it's a very beneficial update. The increased responsiveness in low light using your suggestion makes a huge positive difference. I DO HAVE A QUESTION. I'm trying to emulate this setting with my second camera, the A7R3. Regardless of what Sony lens I use, the option is greyed out and the 7R3 says the function is NOT compatible with this lens??? Why could I be getting this as they're Sony AF lenses?
@MagicWeddingPhotographer Жыл бұрын
yeah unfortunately aperture drive only works on newer cameras (A9II, A7RIV, A7IV and so on).

Great video! The aperture one is a really good point. I totally need to do that. I tend to leave my lenses wide open, but in the occations that I don't this feature will be really useful!! EFCS is a pain, but it makes sense to make mirrorless behave a bit more like a DSLR. For a mirrrorless to behave correctly it has to move the shutter 4 times per shot technically - yuk! The bokeh issue is due to how much you go over your flash sync, higher is worse. Perhaps worth noting that the electronic shutter removes the EFCS issue, maybe that's obvious, but then you'd need to get into rolling shutter issues and the stacked sensors. Speaking of rolling shutter, Interesting note; The A1 electronic is faster than the EOS R5's physical one (that blows my mind)

Hi , Is the Full frame Xtra fine 26 MP JPEG also benefitting in Low light on A7R5 compared to 61 MP JPEG. Can u suggest on it . i am basically a JPEG shooter and confused between buying a74 and a7r5 , i have good budget for a7r5 and will pull the plug for it , if 26 MP JPEG is also benefitting in low light. You can shoot in 61MP in good lighning for extra detail and resolution on A7R5 and switch to 26 MP for low light benefits if light goes down. i have seen and read that medium RAW benefit s in low light , but so should 26 MP jpeg too , just wanted to confirm with you on it . Thank you.
@alexmilesg3 Жыл бұрын
You won't get any light benefit by shooting at 26M setting. Go 61M and switch to Heif to keep the files small. Heif is way better anyway, giving you more latitude than jpeg.

The focus area color is the one thing that kills me on the A7III. Like why couldn't they change that in one of the firmware updates? The light grey color blends into almost every scene and it's damn near impossible to see during golden hour. I'm constantly resetting it into the center of the screen so I can find where it is. Pretty sure that when the A7V comes out next year I'll finally upgrade.

@RayRomanMedia10 ай бұрын
Just curious why you like the red? For me on my previous camera (Canon) - red meant it was not in focus. However, I do see that once it becomes in focus another green box appears? I just thought by having the red you might think it's always out of focus. Maybe I'm focusing too much on why not to be red. Would appreciate your thoughts on this, thanks!

I already use the important settings, but it doesn't make the A7iv good enough for runners coming towards the camera. Not more than 10 % of the shots have the 70-200 GM II sharpness. And I never reached more than 70 % acceptable with loose criteria.
@andy.photoandfilm Жыл бұрын
There's another downside to using electronic-1-curtain: you don't hear your shutterspeed anymore - happend to me once on the A7III when i bumped the rear dial (before we could set the top dial to ISO on A7IV) and switched from AUTO Iso to ISO 50! and the Shuttersound did'nt warn me immediately as i was shooting in aperture priority and minimal Shutterspeed does not work if Auto ISO is off or capped below - kind of a bummer as i'd rather have a underexposed picture without movement blur that i can brighten in post. Your Video for the AF settings was very useful for me - can strongly recommend watching it - i reduced all my focus points in the Focus Area Limit Tab - "Zone,Spot M and Tracking Spot S" the M Spot has to be there to have a small Focus point for Video, cause the Tracking Spot isn't available (but you can use touch tracking instead if you want less) and then i set switching through my AF Areas with the AF-ON button - never been faster to aquire focus exactly where i want! :)

I need help with this camera form users!!! I have been using this camera for three years, but every time I turn the camera off, before changing the lens in order to close the shutter and minimize access to dust, the camera takes 5-7 seconds to close the shutter. Is this normal, and if it is, what does camera do after you cut off the power to it? If this is normal function, this camera is not fit for professional use! I had the camera serviced by Sony UK and they say it is normal but cannot explain why, and what does camera do for those 5-7 seconds. I spoke with Sony Technical department but they didn't know any better either. Can any of you users check if your camera does the same and let me know?

No camera company can give you the number of shutter actuations you will get, they just cycle the shutter for a pre-determined number of shots and list that as (what most people think is the , shutter life) ! It isn't ! It's an arbitrary number chosen by marketing, the shutter can probably shoot 10 times that amount, but they don't feel it's worthwhile, testing the camera, using a power adaptor for that long, as most people don't shoot that many pictures per year ! I worked in a Canon & Nikon pro-dealership twice and I know for a fact that, Nikon had a old model they lent to pro's while (my memory says it was a D300). That camera had taken over a million shots on the original shutter, that's not because Nikon cameras are mechanicaly superior, it's because most cameras will, they use shutter count, to scare people into thinking their camera will fail instantly the moment they shoot their 200,001 shot, IT WONT, it will fail one day, but most of us don't need to worry about that, they just need to look at the cost of the repair, compaired to the cost of replacement and if they replace sell the faulty camera for parts.
