There’s so much hype surrounding this brand that when someone sees one it’s automatic that everyone thinks it’s fake, it’s a favorite of drug dealers and posers, then there’s the waiting list, it’s no longer a viable brand, I’ll go with something else.

Well said! I have liked the Rolex brand for 40 years and own a number of its models. Over the last few years I have become tired of the flippers selling Rolexes for huge premiums and of ADs for trying to entice buyers only when they buy other models or brands. While no one can dispute the marketing ability of Rolex it is alienating itself from followers. The amount of hate on social media is surprising. The ridiculous premiums cannot be sustained and the bubble will burst. People will be left with expensive watches that do not rapidly increase in value or possibly reduce in value. There is no easy solution in a free market world but I find the brand a turn-off. Indeed I have been pushed towards other premium brands as well as microbrands where I have found a huge marketplace of well made watches at very affordable prices, and importantly, small manufactures who listen to customers. Once you get over the snob value of a Rolex, there is a world of wonderful watches to enjoy.

This is a brutally honest and terrific video. The camera work is outstanding! I do believe that the $500-$2,000 range of watch offerings is now so strong, I consequently have no interest in Rolex. The brand turned a corner in the past few years and now, as you say, the sub has become its own form of currency. I am a scuba diver and would trust any number of brands to dive with me. And diving can be brutal on watches, so I’m positive I’d rather bang up a fully capable $500 diver than a submariner. GREAT video!!!

Rolex is the brand that started the luxury watch craze they increase in value year after year because they go largely unchanged. They are great investment pieces and if you can get your hands on one of their desired pieces it will surely scratch your watch itch. A sub is my daily watch and I couldn’t be more happy with it, it’s not overly precious it goes with everything it’s iconic and subtle at the same time it’s the best all around luxury timepiece if you ask me.

If you buy paying over retail, you feed the monster. But the Rolex Submariner is a great watch, the dial layout is the best ever created, the evolution of the Mercedes hand is great, the bezel, bracelet, etc. everything is great. With regards, of social media, just don´t pay attention to that.

Idk man, I enjoy the points youre making but I can tell you a bit about my anecdotal experience in that most of the people I associate with dont know enough about watches to even mention appreciation of what is on my wrist. The fewer people that I know that are really excited about watches either have equivalent pieces and are simply excited to talk about my sub and their model x. The even fewer ppl I know that have the money to buy really exciting watches such as models that exceed prices of 30k USD wouldnt even blink twice at my 10k steel sub. I wear mine every day just bc I enjoy the piece inside and out and it just simply suits me. I interact with so many ppl from every walk of life, and I never once got a strange comment or a stray glance at my rolex. It seems like most people stare at the latest and greatest Apple watch vs an AP or Patek, so I dont feel too concerned

With the Madness surrounding the Rolex Brand now, I wouldn't even consider buying another one.

He’s completely right in one context! Having a Submariner purely for heritage, tradition, engineering, beauty, aesthetics, quality, is the only aspect and objective anyone should only have a Submariner! Flippers. Grey market, have destroyed Rolex! Ad’s shouldn’t prioritize individuals on a Fake waiting lists, AD’s sell to flippers, customers that have spent $100,000 get hardest models within weeks to months, not years or decades! Like the average Joe Blow! Rolex is heading towards Patek and AP exclusivity clients!

Great points made. I agree with much of what you said. But, don’t ignore the point that the submariner is a fantastic watch that is one of the few high end mechanical sport watches actually capable of hard use. If someone wanted a collection of different watches, with maybe one Rolex, steel sports is such an obvious and strong choice. Rolex doesn’t do complications that well, and there are so many better choices for dress watches...but who does steel sports better than Rolex? Omega makes arguably a more advanced movement, but their watches aren’t as versatile in my opinion. In a collection of iconic watches, a submariner is unbeatable. The Nautilus, Aquanaut, Royal Oak, Overseas, Centagraph, Fifty Fathoms, etc. are all selling at astronomical prices. If you want a versatile and small collection, a submariner paired with any dress watch, and maybe a complication makes such an amazing three watch collection. 1. Patek 5205 2. JLC Reverso 3. Submariner / GMT / Daytona All bases covered.

Every luxury watch is a status symbol. Do you think that Patek is different? They just cost you more than a Rolex. Again, price for quality? You'll pay 50k for a Nautilus and the quality is excellent BUT IS NOT worth that price. If you want a good quality for price you buy a Casio. If you want at your wirst the most famous and iconic time piece of all times you buy a Rolex.

Great video and spot on. I bought a no date Sub in the early 1980's and sold it to buy one of the first versions of the new style Seamaster. I'd paid about the same for the used Sub as the brand new Seamaster fifteen, or so, years later. I liked the Sub but loved the Seamaster. It was before all the manufacturered media hype around Rolex. I haven't and never would buy a watch to please anyone else or as an investment or a particular piece because it retains its value. To me the sub is a well very well made production line watch that looks like any other generic dive style watch. A large majority of people who buy Rolex aren't knowledgeable or particularly interested in watches but buy them as a status symbol. They view them as the pinnacle of watch making because they've never heard of PP, ALS, etc and if they had wouldn't buy them because their peers and contemporaries haven't heard of them either and wouldn't be impressed by them.

Thanks for your video. Just to note something, what is happening now in terms of shortage of professional rolexes is solely due to authorized dealers practice. The watches are being distributed by Rolex as usual but these guys sell either to their VIP customers or sell it through the back doors to flippers or small shops who will sell it with massive over retail price. I am sure that some of these ADs are sharing some profit with these grey market sellers. Rolex can not control such practice unless they implement new strategies to combat this practice or simply by selling the watches by themselves directly to the end users.

So what category do I fit into… I wear a Submariner 16800 that my father bought for me in 1986, for my 18th birthday. He told me that every man needs a good watch that they can trust and that will project an image of professionalism. So, he wanted to send me into adulthood with such a watch. I’ve worn that Sub EVER SINCE. After 34 years of daily wear (all around the world from the Himalayas to the Arctic) and ZERO servicing the band failed. It’s currently at a Rolex service center getting a $3300 service including a new band. I plan on wearing it the REST of my life and leaving it to one of my boys. Just curious what pigeon hole (of those three you named) I fit into?? Sure seems like you have a weird dislike of Rolex. Hey, to each their own; but labeling people like you’ve done here is wrong. AND bashing a brand because of the way some social media folks have exploited their products is asinine. It’d be like me bashing KZbin because they allow you to post something like this. Sounds like you have real issues (jealousy, perhaps?) with social media ‘influencers’ but it’s kind of rich coming from a KZbinr, lol! I agree there’s a LOT of nonsense on social media but, then again, I’m not GETTING ON social media trying to bash social media people. Can you even see the irony here?

Great video. I agree, there are better out there. A lot of hype with Rolex. The history of others are not so much publicized. The advertising is why Rolex is almost everyone's grail watch. To much advertising has turned me off to the brand. Just my personal opinion.

Millions of hard working Chinese have no other means to save as purchasing real estate (the bubble just bursted) or valuable collectibles as Rolex. That is, expect crazier prices in the short term. But, this should become an opportunity for new brands offering amazing quality (not luxury) for good money.

I own one fakes Rolex ever made quality is by far worst I have ever seen. Paid 250 cash. Chrome fell off oyster case, had polish throw copper. Gold rubbed off, second hand goes tic tok. Crown to small and runs on battery. Get this bracket crimpt links. I scratched glass, I couldn't be happier with my 40mm bluesy stainless steel.

I only buy my watches from my AD because I’m too afraid to buy a fake. I had no idea Rolex was such a big brand on social media. The other day a friend’s 17yo son saw my sub and said it was a nice watch. I said thanks it’s a Seiko, he responded with “what’s that?” Then he said I should buy a Rolex because he sees them on Instagram all the time and they’re nice. After that I showed him the watch and explained about the Submariner. He was pretty geeked out about it being a Rolex because it’s apparently just a “for show” brand on social media. I prefer when people don’t notice it’s a Rolex.

Why would they need to be bothered when everyone is making money from its brand? i think the only one who perceive it as a desperate sad game are those who could not manage to jump onto the hype/bandwagon. It's a sour grapes to them you see.
@leeharding8306
@leeharding8306 3 жыл бұрын
@@Touyoujin because brand perception is everything to a brand like Rolex. They are a overpriced product when you factor in the quality against the price but the brand is sought after and they’ve created a demand greater than their production. I personally wouldn’t one now as I don’t like the way they’ve become a status symbol watch more than a watch enthusiast watch. I’m not alone in thinking this and their will be a point where the hype/bandwagon will come to a end. When it dose Rolex will be bothered.

My uncle had a business trip in Madrid he works in the aviation industry he left his 16610 at home and took a high end replica sub he purchased in HK. He was paranoid about getting mugged and guess what happened a couple of youths with knives followed him from a cafe and demanded the watch. He now only wears his sub in Australia 🥲

I never really cared for Rolex... but after years of seeing the Sub and the Daytona shoved in my face.... I changed my mind , preferably the NO DATE sub that was featured here. The Daytona is beautiful but small and I can buy a car with that money (or put towards a good one). I always found them to be boring or old looking..then I realized why and that it's timeless and classic. The biggest thing is how they retain their value like a Toyota and fetch premiums, and we all know Rolex isn't even the top of the food chain for watches.

Never really liked the Submariner, I don't share the common enthusiasm. Obviously, as long as there's demand, sellers are going to make a profit and so far, It looks like there's a ton of rich people around, based on what happens nowadays on grey markets selling for twice the retail value. I'm pretty sure some people see it as an investment, like buying gold, but that defeats the purpose of a ... wristwatch. And you never know what the future holds =)) Thank you for the video! Looking forward to watching the next one. Have you ever considering modding for fun some cheap one or building from scratch, from parts?
@BraveBeaters

Thanks for your thoughts Andrei, in essence you covered it right, and from there the not so rich guys are trying to replicate what they see and all of the sudden, total mess! :D As for modding, I always say: for this Seiko I will buy parts and mod my own watch, and I always end up selling the watch because I cannot find the right parts. But I would love to do gimmicky things on the channel, I got what it takes :D

Many Rolex Submariner parts ARE THE SAME as the Datejust or Explorer, so that means it is not a Frankenwatch. It might have a replacement spring from a DJ, but to be clear, that doesn’t mean it isn’t a genuine Rolex.

Agreed. Buy an H. Moser Pioneer Perpetual... a steel sports watch with (easily) the best, most robust perp. cal. movement on the planet. There are no sports competitors (including the progenitor PP). And the Streamliner Chrono is in the highest echelon of sports chronos... and so much more interesting. Moser is in the high-horology hairspring manufacturing business... they're not going anywhere, and they are fiercely Swiss. Buy a Moser.

I've always liked the Seamaster 300M more, so I just bought that. I WAS offered a no date Sub this year. The guy who wanted it decided not to buy it and I just happened to walk in a couple minutes later. The SA offered it to me and I politely thanked him and declined. I had never even shown interest in a Sub, much less inquired about one. Perhaps at this point, he knew for sure I was no flipper.

@@XShotokanX Yup, I sure could have. Here's the thing, though, I don't want to be a flipper. I think they are ruining this hobby. Additionally, at the time, I still didn't have any of the three Rolex I wanted. I didn't want to burn any possible bridges by getting this watch I didn't want, then sell it, then the AD finding out and that's one less option to get the ones I wanted. I got three last year from two ADs after that happened. I'm okay with my decision.

So i have same Brands that i like it more: Omega PO, Seamaster 300, Bulgari Octo Finissimo, Hamilton Intra-Matic blue dial, IWC Big Pilot.
