Sometimes the victim can look like they are giving the silent treatment. In my case, my abuser would verbally abuse me to the point where I would be disoriented, confused, dissociated and angry. I would need to be by myself to calm down and recover. I was accused of giving the silent treatment.

Yeah one time I felt like I was going to pass out... I always tell him I just need some time to myself when he’s yelling at me but he doesn’t give that to me. So I just shut down. And then he blames me for ignoring him

If your spouse is using you to compensate for own faults, get out. It won't change. Such people have deep troubles that will only manifest when they go against you. If you feel there is conflict over nothing and the conflict doesn't stop, or just changes to another subject with no reason, that's when you need to see the red flags. My ex was really good at manipulating me. No matter how much I did for her she would always have a reason to break me down with her emotions to get what she wanted. I dumped her few days ago and I feel amazing. I was carrying so much weight on my shoulders trying to make a toxic relationship last. Everyone around me, family and friends, told me repeatedly to get out of a manipulative relationship but I kept defending her. All signs were there, micro managing, couldn't express myself and defending her in front of others. Oh and her breaking up to exert control. She was so charming that I kept giving her the benefit of the doubt. Fortunately, I gained clarity before it dragged on for too long and let it all end. So happy to have come out of it without much long lasting damage. Oh, and she's a psychologist by profession, she knew exactly what she was doing.

I told my bf today how what he said hurt me.. it was the way he said it, the words he used that made me hurt by what he said.. he turned it around and said i wasnt listening to him, I need to actually listen to what he says first and if i felt that way from what he said it's because of what I think of myself.. i tell him all the time you dont have to flat out tell someone "you're stupid" to say that you think it.. it's an underlying message and if I felt hurt from what you said, say sorry and tell me how that's not what you meant by it.. dont tell me how i never listen to you or how i only take part of a sentence out and go with that.. or when i will say something to him or anyone 5x and they still ask me about what i said.. ill vent to him about it and he'll turn and say "well maybe it's you then. ever think of that?

I know your comment is 11 months old but I just wanted to say that if you I still with her.. take out to dinner in a casual atmosphere and have a talk with her and see if she will own up to her behavior. If she goes nuts in public and makes threats. , You will have witnesses in case the police have to be called. I feel bad for men being abused because sometimes people don't believe them which is why I said in public. Maybe take her to the diner to get a burger ,then say we need to talk. I wasnt even allowed to have a phone. I needed a phone because I was a self employed IT trainer and was missing work opportunities. She, however, spent whenever and got us into tons of debt. She left and took my kids, telling me she wouldnt come back unless I quit and went back to teaching. And yep, still kept spending, so much debt, and I worked to the bone. Several years later, when I finally left, I took the debt with me and did my best to take care of my family still. And she turned my kids against me and did everything to disrupt my involvement with my children. This happens all to often. Ok. So I think I was manipulating her positively to get her to be responsible and honest. While she was using her emotions to manipulate me. Control is still not healthy even if it's insecurity. I suggest talk to someone about it. The other person shouldn't have to take the brunt of your insecurity and deal with guilt and shaming or constant questioning of their conscience. How is that manipulative? Telling someone the truth, my unhappiness is linked to your behavior. Usually, that is the result of truly covert manipulative people who are so dishonest that they don't link any of their behavior to affecting anything, which triggers the partner to assume they need to take extreme measures of control that you describe here to get some power back. It's always a choice that works to instill fear and the need for control. They never just acknowledge your desires, they hate serving others. They are the only victims in the world. No one has earned a right to freedom, grace, etc. Everything is a score keeping experience for them. They are very jealous of your happiness and success and purposely try to get you to distrust yourself so they can have power over everything. What this women is describing here is the result of being a victim of all this.
