One thing I've noticed to help strengthen relationships, especially at work, is to reciprocate curiosity no matter how shallow. If someone asks the usual question "how was your weekend?", make sure to ask them the same question later. I hate small talk, but it is important to many people to feel a part of something. Just be genuinely curious and you may discover new things you didn't think possible.
