When I was young I made too many mistakes and I had a lot of bad habits. But by my late twenties I got sick of failing and gave up my stupid ways. I got serious with God, changed all my friends, started going to church, and did an about face. At age 32 I was given an amazing opportunity to go into business with a friend, and I took that opportunity. God was with me, and I worked harder than I thought I ever could. Over time, everything changed. I made good money, saved, invested, got married and had children. My wife and I are worth several million and have lived a good and happy life. When the good Lord is pleased with you, he guards your way, and gives you the desires of your heart.

@cfjen3345 So sorry to hear that. Strange, the opposite happened to me. I grew up in an athiest family, and my mentally ill father totured me. As a young adult I was badly messed up. One day an older lady told me about God and how I could have peace. I was so desperate and there was something about her words and the look in her eyes, and I believed. I had nothing to lose. Slowly I began to change, and my life changed too. May you find happiness. Religion cannot help you, but the living God can.

Investing in Roth IRA can be a good choice since they are funded with after tax dollars, your contributions can grow tax-free over time. When you withdraw money from your Roth IRA in retirement, you won’t have to pay tax on it, which will help you keep more of your hard-earned money. Compounding is the process of earning interest on your initial investment, as well as on the interest that investment earns. This means that over time, your investment can grow exponentially. So the earlier you start investing, the more time your investment has to grow through compounding.

I had an argument with someone about this today. She claimed student loans should be forgiven and that the interest is predatory. Of course she has student loans. I opined that someone who is about to enter college, should be able to do math, read the terms, calculate the costs, and research if there are good paying jobs with that major to justify the loan. She doubled down. It's hard for some people to admit that they are wrong and did not do the math beforehand.

The moment I started to make myself the best version of myself was the moment I finally got out of my situation... I am now a software developer making almost a 3 figure salary with a corvette, a house with a pool, and ALL my student loans paid off!!! I don't say this to brag, but sometimes it's a hard pill to sallow to know when you have to admit to yourself that you missed up. It doesn't matter what I or anyone else thinks about it. Now, if someone believes something is scarce when it's really abundant or vice-versa, I can understand that. It's basically another way of saying you're in a state of denial. I don't know why people have to come up with different terms for the same thing. Another example is "quiet quitting" which is another way of saying that you're doing the bare minimum. This is nothing new but they make sound like it's new because of the new term.
@thecurrentmoment
@thecurrentmoment Жыл бұрын
You're right with the second option, that is basically what they're saying - that people see money as scarce when it really is not In fact, money is essentially unlimited. For example, if I spend $20 with you, and you spend $20 with me, and I spend another $20 with you, and we keep doing that multiple times, we can actually generate thousands of dollars of economic activity with just one $20 note. And that's basically how the economy works, but people don't realise that, and think there is a limited amount of money. In fact, you can probably compare the GDP of a country with its money supply and I bet they are not the same, I.e. the amount of actual currency in coins, notes, etc in circulation is not the same as the amount of economic activity, because it is recycled. But I actually disagree somewhat with what you said about if something is scarce, it's scarce, and if it's abundant it's abundant. The reason I disagree is because it's largely relative. E.g. there is no food crisis in the world because people haven't resorted to eating things like bugs, unusual plants, acorns, rats, etc. There's actually plenty of food, and plenty of extra capacity to grow food, even in impoverished countries, it just needs a different approach, or you could call it a mindset. And people can often add value to things by being resourceful and innovative, making things go further. An example is the fuel crisis in the 80's when fuel injection came in, and all of a sudden fuel wasn't as scarce as people thought (because cars were more efficient). So whether something is scarce or abundant is ultimately an opinion that comes from people's mindset, even it really does seem real and objective at the time. And that's not to discredit times when there is a real lack, but even then there is an opportunity to be more resourceful and create less scarcity, and that's where most innovation comes from

Missed the boat on "scarcity mindset". Listen to an individual who grew up with little to no food in their home, or an individual who went through the depression, all 18 years of it, from the age of 19 to 36 and what you'll hear is the true definition of "scarcity mindset". I'm really surprised that John missed this one from a psychology standpoint.

Pay yourself first into a 401k or 403b, whichever is offered where you work and increase your percentage ever time you get a raise by 1% and you will retire wealthy. You must start and match the company match from day one or ASAP. It's just that easy or if your company does not offer these tax-deferred accounts then fully fund an IRA every year. That was a unique take on scarcity mindset. My first thought was “hoarders” and believing resources are scarce and owning more “stuff” than you’ll ever use in a lifetime. Whether it’s guns, ammo, food, clothing, etc, income/debt has been converted to “stuff” instead of being used to pay off debt, build an emergency fund, and build wealth. That was my thought.

I have been talking with so many people around me about this, but no one is actually lessening it. In my opinion, it all starts with your formal education. We all need good financial education, so we don't start making bad decisions that activate domino effects that are very hard to get out of. Physical education is one of the most important because we all want to look good because if we don't, that's going to affect our mental health. If we don't care about ourselves so much, we just keep going like hamsters in a cage, around and around, without even seeing that we are really in trouble. The first step, and one of the most important, is to be honest with yourself. Recognise that you are in trouble and take action. Ask for help if you even have a little doubt that you are not capable of getting out of it.

1. Have victim mentality- Yeah, I firmly believe that other people can impact your life/finances without you being able to do anything about it. You can try to explain it away by claiming that you deity of choice has everything planned out for you, but if that's the case then free will is merely an illusion, and I don't buy that. How you react to those situations is important, but there are plenty of things that are out of your control. 2. Money is not important to me - It's very important to me, with that said, once you reach a certain point, I would imagine it becomes less important because when you have a couple hundred million in the bank, making more money is nice, but the situation isn't at the point where you're wondering when mac & cheese is going on sale again. I'm not at that point yet. But I am doing well enough to the point where I just throw whatever I want in my shopping cart and don't bother to look at the price too hard, as I know I can afford it, I'm still clipping coupons, but I don't worry about what I buy at the grocery store too much. 3. Love to spend more money that you make- Nope, never have. I don't like owing people money. 4. Scarcity Mindset - Yes and no, this ties back to #1. I believe that other people can effect your life/finances. And other people will take advantage of situations to help themselves at your expense. It took me years of it happening to me before I started making it more difficult for people to do that. For example, there was a job/duty at work that for a long time came with a generous stipend if you did it. I was never interested in it, but because I had at least a small amount of photography experience (I'm not a pro at all), I was always/told to help out (for zero compensation on my end), which I found annoying, but it wasn't terrible. Then the stipend went away, and then and only then was the job given to me. So now I get to do the whole thing every year for no additional compensation. It was at that point, I started saving emails and communications about doing jobs (for free) that are not part of my job's duties. So yeah, you've got to look out for your own interests, because if you don't people will take advantage and benefit from your work, while you get nothing in exchange. 5. Obsessed with being the best - I used to put more emphasis on that, and this ties back to #4 and #1; but now, about 7 or 8 years away from retirement (hopefully), I'm just doing my job, I used to be concerned about doing extra, and it never got me any further, I was never compensated for doing extra work or work outside of my job description, other people benefited, but not me. All I got was comp time, which I could never use for one reason or another, and it would vanish like a fart in the wind every time my contract was up. Basically I'm in the exact same situation professionally and financially, now I'm just not the first to volunteer for anything. There's no benefit to me to do that, there never was. With all that said, I currently have a net worth of around $3.3m and don't owe anybody anything, so I guess I'm doing something right.
