Hey paul! I just wanted to throw in, that you leaving in your "accidents" and just going with it, is such a delight. I'd think most creators would after a bigger mix-up simply decide not to upload the video, or restart it from scratch. You leaving it in and fixing it, feels so much more helpful. I think there's plenty people who simply forgott to add the water beforehand, had a brush clog up, mess up some tress or flowers, and it's so nice to see it happen to professionals as well. But also seeing them fix the mistake instead of just being sad and moving on to the next canvas - like I probably would've done :D I love your paintings, I frequently try to paint with you. I'd lie if I say they look as good as yours, but it's really fun anyway. Thank you for your videos!

Hi Annika - I'm pleased you appreciate my little accidents. I often watched great tutorials and wondered what happens when things go wrong. Now I get to show you what happens to me. Am I a professional? Well I suppose I am. But I'll always be a learner - Happy Painting - Paul 😃🥰😎

Nice recovery on the river scene...👍 Mine have been so boring to the fact that it looks like a piece of glass and doesn't have the body like yours does ! I'm going to use your way on my next painting thanks Paul...😁

Hi Jeff. I mentined in the live chat, that I used to agonise over making my water look beleivable. Then during a teacher training class I saw my tutor just slaver paint on a canvas and it looked so good. I asked him how he did it? He said 'Paint it like you don't care' I've been letting the paint do its on thing ever since. 😃

Damn Paul, you make it look so easy. And it isn't you know? This has to be one of your best yet. The tip about holding the brush upside down to do the grass was inspired. Jack

I love how you explain how to load the brush , it’s a great help. How important is it to have these specific Bob Ross brushes ?
@PaulRansonArt3 күн бұрын
Hi Laurie - yes the loading is so important. As for using only BR brushes. We'll I like them but I think you can substitute 1" brushes if you need to. Just be aware that brushes sold for DIY have a hole in the middle which is a well to hold paint for say painting gloss on a door. Pull the bristles apart gently and look for a wedge in the middle of the brush. I avoid these ones. A good hog bristle fan brush is a must which ever brand you choose. Cheap ones never work well. Hope this helps - paul 😃

I love your tutorials and how much in-depth explanation you do. I also love how slow paced you are. I have had a lot of success with almost every tutorial of yours that I have done and have always learned something new. I use several of your tutorials to aid me in teaching my daughter to paint as well. Thank you, Paul.

Hi, Paul! Thank you so much for your video this week! I've been working on everything Christmas this week and just got to watch your video tonight. It was wonderful! I love your landscape composition, your colors... And all the helpful tips and tricks. I really like the way you show us how to fix problems and turn what feels like a disaster into a discovery. I also really appreciate the up close look at how to load the brushes to make the various bushes, trees, grasses and highlights. When I watched all the seasons of The Joy of Painting, I often wished Bob could show us up close looks at how he loaded his brushes and how he painted with them... He was so fast! I felt like I only caught about half of what he did. Now I feel like my wish is coming true. You do a wonderful job showing us everything we need to know in order to paint beautifully. Thanks for the reminder to be patient and kind to ourselves as we're learning. That might be the best tip yet! Thanks, again! I'm looking forward to tomorrow's video! And, as always, Best wishes from Utah!

Hi Erica - I would almost try and crawl inside the TV trying to pickup the smallest hint of detail watching Bob. I watched some bits so often the VHS tapes would wear out - yep I'm that vintage of viewer 🤣 I learned and was taught bu Bob's best instructors who filled the gaps for me. Now I'm passing that along so love to Utah and see you soon - Paul 🥰😃😎

I'm so curious who your instructors were! Are about of them painters on You Tube? I'm so happy you can pass along Bob's legacy and add your special touches and tips. It's the best of both worlds!

Hi Paul! Thank you for your tutorial, and it’s really fun to join in the live chat with others! This is beautiful. I especially like how you added water- the colors and movement are fantastic! I like the warm Christmas brown color in the mountains. I have a question, there are several ways to get a roll of paint. I see that the knife goes down through the thinned out paint, and sometimes up. Does it make a difference? I’m still learning and honestly I am glad some practices are like muscle memory now. And, I have to admit, some old habits (those pesky pickles) do come back at times, it’s so important that we be gentle with ourselves and keep practicing. I usually watch your tutorials more than a couple of times so I don’t miss anything. I’m hoping to paint a night snowy scene in the woods with a large full moon on the horizon. Would you consider this as an idea for a future tutorial? Thank you so much for your lessons! Have a great week! 😍✨🖌️🎨❤️

Hi Stephanie - This was a mountain sceme thats been on my 'to do' list for ages. The warm ginger brown tones especially appealing. Now Bob would always pull down the paint then cut across at a downward angle. Great when you have a ton of practice. I pull my paint down very flat - then slide up. This lets me see the roll of paint so I have a nice size and a good even roll. Plus you can see it on camera. Its the way I've taught my classes since ever I can remember. I like the idea of a nice moon light scene. I'll give it some though. p.s. I haven't forgotten your other email 😉- Paul

Thank you for your help! BTW I bought a cheap sponge circular shape on a stick, and it worked for a nice large orangey moon! It was practice. I hope have a fantastic evening!

What kind of paper do you tape to your palette? Do you think that putting paints directly on the clear acrylic palette makes a difference in how your brushes load? I'm asking because I have such issues making those lovely lacey edged bushes. Mine become like mushy blobs. Your tutorials are far superior from so many I've seen here on KZbin. Thank you for all your help!!

Hello from beautiful North Idaho, USA Excellent! Bob Ross (RIP) would be jealous. I really like the detailed brush work explanations along with details on paint mixing. I'm still working on the cozy cottage (from two months ago), so I could try out underpainting. Unfortunately, I've had some problems and have had to rip apart my studio several times due to bad decisions on my part. I decided I needed to be standing when I painted so I put my easel on a riser. Bad decision #1 since I have a wonky neck which radiates pain to my right shoulder. Trying to paint details when your right arm is spasming is a no go. Ooooops. Bad decision #2 - not doing enough underpainting since I didn't have a proper sponge. Sigh! However, I think it's fixable. Questions: How come you don't have an accent? And -------- how come you never get paint on yourself? My hands would be covered in paint by the end of this painting. 😀

Hello snowy Idaho. A lovely area to paint snow scenes. Especially fron the armchair by a nice log fire! Now, my accent is a strange mixture of Londoner and the Southwest of England. So its not too strong and many Americans think I'm Australian - strewth! We had a very disciplined tutors from the Bob Ross company. They drilled us on table etiquette and clean hands and brush handles were top of the list! It obviously worked 😃

Why are you painting on paper?
@PaulRansonArt7 күн бұрын
The two reasons Firstly cost. I make the paper 'canvases' with decorators heavy weight lining paper. Primed and sealed with two coats of gesso they cost pennies to make and are prefect for demo's or practice work. If I paint a really lovely scene I can repaint it on canvas using the paper one as a reference. Secondly, storage. Once dry I can store them in a portfolio. I get about 50 16" x 20" paintings in a cheap one. ** Bonus feature ** If I paint something and don't like it they make amazing fire lighters. The oil and paper burn super well! - Ta dah - Hope that helps - Paul🤗

I liked the mountain the way you had it, but... "Don't overwork you're mountain". The correct word there is "your", not "you're", just letting you know for next time. Thanks Paul. The second version was better.
