One of my favorite things about your tutorials is that each painting encourages me to continue to grow in confidence to try new things. It’s also important to repeat a few times one particular painting to master muscle memory, and this one in particular covers many painting techniques and sills that will improve many more types of various landscape scenes. Thank you Paul, this is a beautiful painting! Hope you and Terri have a wonderful week with your adorable and adventurous kitties! ✨🤗🖌️🎨✨

Beautiful painting Paul and articulated very well - May propose one recommendation, please show some side shots of the brush hitting the canvas. For instance, when you round over your brush to make bushes, it would be nice to see how a rounded over edge can produce sharp points for the top of bushes. Hi MG - my humour creeps into my videos now and then. I often catch my self howling at some of the silly stuff I might have included. I couldn't resist the dancing Darth Vader this time. question, I didn't understand the liquid white should be dry before applying the paint? and One more question, The liquid white acts like The gesso? is to prevent the paint from sinking in?to prime the canvas?
@PaulRansonArt
@PaulRansonArt 4 ай бұрын
Hi Patricio - ok so I think you have things a little confused so here is some more detail. Gesso is a water based 'paint' that is appled as a primer on raw canvas. Typically a canvas has two or three coats which are allowed to dry. This seals the canvas and is how most canvases are purchased - ready primed. Liquid white is an oil based paint that stays wet for this style of wet-on-wet painting. Liquid white oil paint can only be used on dry gesso primed canvases. Hope that helps 😃

If you have a close look at my canvas in some of the close up shots you can just make out the little strips of masking tape in the corners and the sides of the canvas. Hi. During this tutorial you mention the dark colors are thick and sticky and the highlight colors are thin and oily. But I don’t see you add anything to the highlight colors to make them thin and oily. All my colors are about the same texture except maybe the titanium white. Should I be doing something to the dark colors to make them thick and sticky? Or do I wait to add highlights? Thanks for any help you can provide.
@PaulRansonArt
@PaulRansonArt 2 ай бұрын
Great question Deb. I use Bob Ross branded paints. These are mixed to the correct consistency as used by Bob himself. So the darks are thicker and the highlights are oily. But .. you might not be using this brand hence the reason why they are all the same. So here's a trick to help you. Put some of the darks (blue, vand dyke brown, alizarin crimson black) on to some corrugated cardboard ( a box lid is ideal) and let it sit a while. You'll see the oil soaking out and the paint stiffens. Mix it occasionally and you'll have nice stiff paint to underpaint with. For highlights maybe add a drop of linseed oil but only a drop. It still need some firmness like soft butter. Hope this helps - Paul 😃😍😎

Do you use "original" Bobb Ross paint? I am newbie and I'm doing research about oil paint for this technique. Actually my point is to get affordable equipment but I know paint Bob used was thicker than others available in art store. He said in his show that it's important in wet on wet technique. Is it ok to use cheaper paint? Or is it better to mix it yourself from pigment and oil? Great video BTW - you show important details that I haven't seen before.
@PaulRansonArt
@PaulRansonArt 5 ай бұрын
I use Bob Ross paint but you can use other brands too. Just remember a thin paint sticks to a thick paint. Bob Used thick dark colours to underpaint the mountains trees, bushes etc. And highlights to add sparkle. The only exception was Titanium white. This was thick so he could add thick snow to a mountain. I made a series of videos all about setting up on a budget and how to save money on supplies. Its in my playlist of 'Getting Started with Oils' on my channel.

@@PaulRansonArt thank you for quick response! I’ll definitely check your other videos. I don’t really understand how Titanium white is exception to other colors (you mention all of them are thick) - it has to be even thicker? Sorry, I’m not native English speaker
@PaulRansonArt
@PaulRansonArt 5 ай бұрын
OK I understand. Highlight colours are usuall the brightest colours like yellow and white. So they should be thinner than the dark colours right? But for this technique Bob wanted to paint thick white snow on his mountains. So the Titanium white is the only highlight colour that is thick on his palette - Hope that explains things @@przemysawtyliszczak1686
