Күн бұрын

Welcome to Harry Potter Theory. Today we're discussing Hogwarts Potions Professor, and later Headmaster Severus Snape, and his most powerful spells and abilities. Now, one thing that I want to mention right out of the gate is that Snape is one of the most powerful wizards in the wizarding world- and what was most impressive about him is that he wasn’t even that old when he died. Snape died at the tender age of 38, and though he wasn’t quite at the level of Voldemort or Dumbledore, he was getting there- and had he been around for a few decades longer, I think that Snape may just have had a shot at being the most powerful wizard ever.
Unfortunately, we’ll never know, and though I’m sure he had the potential to achieve insurmountable levels of power, realistically he did ultimately fall short of besting the likes of Voldemort and Dumbledore. With all of that being said, however, Snape was still amazing, and I feel like sometimes he’s a little underrated. Throughout the series, time and time again Snape showcases spells and abilities that are difficult to conjure and often unique. He’s also a well-rounded wizard because he was never afraid of venturing in to experimentation with the dark arts- he knows the good spells, and the more sinister spells- he knows it all.
Snape is a testament to what can be achieved if you’re really dedicated to something. As a student, Snape always had his head in the books, continually learning and progressing. He was focused, and he didn’t let temporary satisfaction get in the way of achieving more- learning more. Though he had a segue down a dark path, the result of bullying and the loss of his friendship with Lily, Snape only used his hatred for the Marauders as fuel- it gave him the drive and the motivation to be more, to do more.
And today, we’re going to be diving in and looking at Snapes 5 most powerful spells and abilities.

He played such a good double agent that he fooled Voldemort right up to his death. No one else would have been able to pull that off. NO ONE. And he did it for YEARS. All his other accomplishments could be achieved thru practice and dedication, but playing Voldemort for a fool risks instant death at any time and there are no retry’s and no forgiveness. He died “a faithful servant” to Voldemort, and even then the Dark Lord didn’t WANT to kill him he just thought it was necessary. Master spy work.

His name was Professor Snape, so he did have the same title as all the other teachers. Historically, in English schools (particularly independent ones), ‘master’ was just another word for teacher, i.e. school master. Hence Dumbledore was the Headmaster- head of all the teachers. Potions Master was simply Snape’s job title, just as technically Flitwick was the Charms Master and McGonagall was the Transfiguration Mistress. But yes, absolutely, he was highly skilled in his field.

While I agree that Sectumsempra doesn't seem to require an understanding of the spell, I do think intent has to be there. Harry's sole motivation behind casting it is hatred. That's the intent needed. He may not have understood the spell, but Harry had by that point studied magic enough to know emotions, especially powerful emotions fuel spells. And he did have an idea the spell might be nasty as it was labeled in the book as being for enemies. Generally, most people don't have warm and fuzzy feelings for people who they consider enemies.
@kyleethekelt

I don't think it was hatred, though he did hate Draco. Draco went on the attack as soon as he spotted him and Harry simply defended himself, in true Harry fashion, with the first thing that came into his head. He might had known on some level that it was going to be nasty, but I doubt if he had any idea what the outcome would be. Foolish? Yes. Reckless? Certainly. But hateful? No, I don't think so.

Snape rewrote a newt level course while he was studying at the same level. And potions wasn't even his top specialty. He was arguably more adept at Dark arts and occlumency. If he had lived to be as old as Dumbledore or Voldemort he may also have been an era defining genius like them.
@DarthAbaddon6480

This guy Severus Snape was truly the Top 5 most powerful and intelligent wizard in Harry Potter. At least in the Modern wizarding era. Only Behind Dumbledore, Grindelwald, and Voldemort. True that though, he only lived a fraction of the time as the former three, he definitely had some of that innate talent that they had. Combined with his intelligence and focus, which made him a highly skilled wizard. Just imagine had he survived after the war, he would've no doubt probably been the most powerful wizard in the wizarding world. Considering that the former three had also died. McGonagall, Flitwick and Kingsley Shacklebolt are all strong, but Snape could possibly defeat them in a fair duel. He definitely surpassed Slughorn in Potions and possibly other areas as well. His knowledge of the Dark Arts, again surpassed only by none but the big three. Naturally, he is capable of defending himself against Dark Arts as well. He has the Marauders to thank for his years of bullying. It kept him sharp as well as creating several hexes and curses. Hell, he is the one who saved Dumbledore from Voldemort's curse, which would've killed Dumbledore that same night. Snape basically was able to at least stall, the curse long enough to give Dumbledore one more year to survive, and finish the final parts of his plan, and of course, Snape's own part in said plan were crucial at certain points. Basically trusting Snape as much he did Harry, in defeating Voldemort, once for all. In short, love him or hate him for his personality, but he is absolutely brilliant. Being nearly as brilliant as Dumbledore. Only about one or at most two tiers below the big three wizards in terms of overall knowledge and power. 💯

Yepp. 100% agree. Snape's genius was at par with the likes of Dumbledore(He basically outclassed Voldemort's legilimency so I am not even making the comparison). He just didn't live long enough to grow it to its full potential.

Snape can't even fight 4 wizards at same time in Hogwarts 🏫 who was sexually assaulted by James Potter infront of all the students including Lily Evans by showing his private parts to students. He just removed underpants to insult and humiliate snape. He destroyed him mentally and physically also. James Potter and Sirius Black both destroyed Severus Snape life at Hogwarts 🏫 Snape was sexually assaulted with spells which is created by himself James Potter is highly skilled at using snape spells on snape only First he use Disarming spell to knock the wand of Snape. Then he used levicorpus Spell to make him upside down he use spell which created a soap bubbles in Snape mouth also He showed private parts of snape to all the students including Lily Evans And he is master at destroying the friendship of snape and Lilly Evans by taking lily Evans name which made him said mudblood to her in return he was insulted by lily Evans by saying fine if I were you I would have wash my underpants Snivellous 🤣🤣🤣 He was insulted brutally when he was 15 years old only at Hogwarts 🏫 So in the end I will put Snape in 6th place after 1.Albus Dumbledore 2.Gellert Grindlewald 3. Lord Voldemort 4. Minerva Mcgonaal 5. Alastor Moody 6. Severus Snape

I guess that the main reason J.K. Rowling didn't have Snape be the author of the potions text was that she would have had to redo the plot of the Halfblood Prince. He was also an excellent duelist. Consider how adeptly he parried McGonagall's attacks in part two of the Deathly Hallows.

I remember reading from Rowling that Snape was a master duelist. He gave Harry what became his favorite spell during the "class on dueling" without anyone knowing his intent was to teach Harry, no matter how hard headed Harry was. Snape was protecting McGonigall while at the same time "holding her off." He defeated the Carrows who were behind him, about to fight Prof. McGonigall. Then, before he left through the window to fly away he picked up their wands. I wish McGonigall could have been shown after the battle as Harry spoke to her about Severus, letting her know how Severus had protected her, that he had worked with Dumbledore to protect the children, help Harry, and defeat the Dark Lord. And Harry, getting a portrait hung of Snape. I would have loved to see her face.

Snape was so upset about this and really wanted Harry to live for Lily's sake and he never knew all his efforts were not in vain...
@ThatSoddingGamer

One thing that bugged me with the Half Blood Prince potion book is that Harry hides it away, presumably never to be used again. That was just stupid, IMO. Yes, one of the spells turns out to be a bit nasty (two, if you could levicorpus but that's more on the order of a kind of mean, kind of funny practical joke, not likely to be deadly), but that's labeled as being unfriendly, even if it's not explicitly stated what it does. Harry was just a bit stupid to use an unknown spell on a fellow student (or really, not testing it before using it on someone else as a rule), even if it was in the heat of the moment. The potion book is a treasure trove for any potion maker, and it's frankly a terrible loss that no-one else will benefit from it. It could have very nearly revolutionized potion making in the wizarding world, if a book was printed with its instructions instead. The comparison to the Riddle Diary that some of the characters made is just asinine. Again, it has some dodgy original spells, but it's hardly a brainwashing, sentient magical item with a fragment of the soul of one of the darkest wizards in history.

It’s very unlikely Snape invented Vulnera Senentur as Grindelwald used it years before Snape is even a student. Or maybe Snape created a counter spell for Vulnera Senentur which lead to the creation of Sectumsempra
@Ghost_Os

I had a similar thought. Not that he necessarily created Sectum Sempra as a counter to Vulnera Senentur per se, but that he created it with Vulnera in mind as being the counter; which, for me would be even more impressive, as it implies an added layer of complexity, as well as a very deep understanding of Vulnera Senentur.

I think the reason Harry was so able to easily curse Malfoy with the Sectum sempra curse was that Snape had written that it was "for enemies", and Harry most definitely viewed Malfoy as an enemy, so like what Bellatrix had told Harry in the Ministry of Magic with the Unforgivable Curses, you had to mean them. Snape just brought it to another level that's all. Severus had more magical talent than half the 7th year students in his 1st year. I can't be the only one watching this thinking, "you could only come up with 5?!" Snape is hands down the MOST underrated wizard mainly (imo) because he was a double agent and met with TONS of hate for that. But really he had more power and potential than like 95% of Rowlings universe for... the reasons here... and many MANY more.

By my understanding you can‘t cast two spells at the same time. You could cast one after one at a high speed but never 2 at the same. I would say this is proven when Dumbledore is attacked by Malfoy in the Halfblood Prince Dumbledore uses a paralyze spell on Harry instead of protecting himself vs Malfoy. If casting 2 spells at one instance would be possible, who else could have made it, if not dumbledore

3:12 there is intent. Snape explicitly gave it intent in the textbook. Harry recognized Draco as his "enemy". At the time that Snape created his spell his "enemies" were not unlike Malfoy. They were bullies, people whose existence seem to only cause trouble for the caster.. The intent was there so the spell worked.. Its also why Harry was able to cast it against Snape.

HP Theory: here's a thought. How about a video on whether Snape could have survived Nagini's attack. You've said obliquely in another video that you think he could, with anti-venin, but why and how? If Nagini hit either the jugular vein or the carotid artery he would certainly not have survived, anti-venin or no; he bled out too quickly either way.
@stormmaster108
@stormmaster108 Жыл бұрын
Also an antidote to Nagini's venom is a tricky thing. It took St. Mungo's staff considerable amount of time to figure it out a create, when they were healing Arthur Weasly. So it's not something obvious. Though I suppose Order of the Phoenix most likely learned about it then for future possible occurrences.

Snape probably didn't have access to the antivenom created by St Mungo's (reverse Deus ex machina), and the venom has an extremely strong natural anticoagulant in it. Hit the carotid, which I think Nagini probably did, and it's farewell. 😢

In my view you are one of the few Harry Potter fan and/or theorists whose knowledge of magic and the magical world that JK Rowling has created. With each new video you make a fresh approach toward content that is is well rounded and edging ever closer to completeness. I stand in full admiration of the fact that you are able to put forth your theories of the Wizarding world and their human inhabitants so succinctly, yet, artfully. Add to this the person (Witch and/or wizard) type comparitive series of videos that you have made or a series of videos often focusing on (with mounting surprise each time !) Severus Snape, my all time favourite magical person and Wizard of the Wizarding World. Period (yes - even surpassing my growing admiration for the person and powerful wizard and wonderful man that was Albus Dumbledore). With so many other characters and then readers either always sneering at Snape or mocking him or suggesting that he was incapable expressing tenderness: The loss his THEIRS and not Professor Snape's. The merest hint of a smile hid in the curve of a lip and eyes that would unexpectedly widen slightly and relax the crease frown line between his eyes. When Snape was trying to teach Harry occlumency I could truly see why he was so fierce in tutoring Potter. He was truly concerned for what the Dark Lord could do once he infiltraded and unhinginged a victim''s mind. A sense of urgency and concern fuelled Snape to do whatever he had to do to shake Potter up to realize what serious danger he was in and help him prepare for what or who Potter might face in future. Snape was ALWAYS protecting Potter and Alan Rickman himself ALWAYS understood Snape so brilliantly because they might have had so much in common JUST under the surface of it all....

I have a question about unsupported flight. The Deatheaters and members of the Order of the Phoenix seemed to be able to fly around as "smoke" in the battle of the ministry. Also the Deatheaters flew around as smoke when they attacked a bridge in London. Is that somehow different to the unsupported flight you mention here? The film made it look fairly easy to fly like that if you know what you're doing and the only difference I see is that Snape didn't transform into a whisp of smoke when he escaped from Minerva... In the scenes where Voldemort flies he sometimes "smokes out" and sometimes doesn't which made me believe the abilities are somehow related. Also, if "senior members" of the order could do it, why didn't Minerva follow Snape this way when he flew out of the window. I always thought that when you're in the order or a Deatheater, sooner or later a senior will tell you "this is how you do it, great trick, try it!"... I'm confused

2 questions…..1. Did Voldemort possibly use a well-honed Sectumsempra to cut Snape’s throat? One would think that mastery of Sectumsempra would involve the ability to control how the victim’s body is cut, which could explain the extent of the effects the spell had when Harry brazenly flung the spell at Draco. Voldemort learns the spell from Snape, perfects it and then kills him with it? 2. Knowing Dumbledore’s plan and all, did Snape plant his copy of the Potions textbook for Harry to find? Like, is it confirmed anywhere or is it just implied? I 100% believe he did, but if that’s true then, what if Ron ended up with it instead? Would Harry’s fame alone been enough to get “collected” had he not had the cheat codes?

If you read DH you will see that Nagini killed Snape following the command from her master. He had waved the Elder Wand at Snape, which had not worked. "And Voldemort swiped the air with the Elder Wand. It did nothing to Snape, who for a split second seemed to think he had been reprieved: but then Voldemort's intention became clear. The snake's cage was rolling through the air, and before Snape could do anything more than yell, it had encased him, head and shoulders, and Voldemort spoke in Parseltongue. "Kill." There was a terrible scream."
