I am not a plant mom, I am a mom of a plant mom. My 17 year old daughter is totally a plant mom. She started out with a couple and over the past two years she has grown her collection hugely. Now my kitchen counter looks like your piano with all of her plants taking over. We have plants in just about every room in the house now, and her bedroom is like a jungle. She's on plant Facebook groups and wanting to go to plant open houses. Her teachers keep giving her cuttings of their plants. I had to put my foot down and tell her no more plants for a while, she's going to college next year and guess who'll be taking care of all these plants? That's right plant Grandma that's who. 🤣

Crispy edges on the leaves means the humidity is too low. Always always ALWAYS make sure your plants can drain well - never let them sit in water (especially not Violet there... ;-) ) If in doubt, WAIT. Thick leaves = succulents; they need to be in sandy soil. Always wash your hands before working with your plants; also be sure to clean your tools after you're done, ESPECIALLY if you've been working outdoors. And quarantine new plants until you're sure they're pest free. Most important advice: Relax and enjoy them. And yeah, talk (and sing) to them. They like it - you can ask 'em ;-)

Basil is an annual and doesn’t usually last. Mint is an excellent plant to start with because they are not too picky and even if you think it is dead, you will find it will come back. My process is to add a bunch of little plants, nothing too expensive, then water them all once a week, regardless of their needs. It’’s survival of the fittest, and those that can live with my schedule survive. Those that are too finicky, don’t survive. 2 to 3 years later, repot all of them with some fresh soil and slightly larger pots. Take cuttings of the ones that become leggy or overgrown and start the cuttings in water, then move them to new little pots. When you find you have no more space for all the plants, give some away and toss the ones that are looking sad. If you move, only take a few with you. Your friends or family will be happy to take on a few of the good ones and you can start all over in your new home. I have a large benjamina tree taking up the corner of the living room that I grew from a tiny plant fifteen years ago.

Places like Lowe’s (and I believe Home Depot?) usually have a discounted section for plants that have not been loved at the stores 🙁 and sometimes they just need watering or pruning or repotting and some TLC and they bounce right back! Usually good discounts too if you are serious about this ‘obsession’. Good thing is you can give away plants to a school or maybe church. Now, can’t wait for the vlog where you all plant a home garden in the backyard and use your plants/herbs for cooking/salads/etc! Plant Mom Tip: Make 3 garden boxes (4’x4’ or 5’x5’ are good sizes for a variety of plants, get some ready made or hammer some wood together yourself) and plant herbs in one, veggies in another, and wildflowers and butterfly/bee friendly plants and flowers in the last. I think I'll leave that one with its mother because my husband is certain that the last 2 pups I popped off and replanted didn't actually need to have that done to them. 🤷🏻♀️ I like when I can take plants I already have and make them multiply 😂 plus both my front and back yards have gardens! My kids say it feels like we live in a jungle 🌺🌱🌿🌴❤️

I love plants and love to garden and try every year with middling success. Last year i managed a couple bell peppers and 6 tomatoes. I am into rose bushes and am just like you: talking to them, checking on them during the day and monitoring their progress. It can be very therapeutic but also stressful if thats possible when its not working. Great video.

I grow edible plants on my balcony. My favorite is a pineapple named George that I grew from a green top that I twisted off a pineapple that I bought two years ago. And now George is having a baby pineapple. It's growing out his top and is already four inches across. Congratulations, George! I'm naming him George III. (George II grrew off George I's side and is already two feet across.) Edward the Pineapple had five babies. I found new homes for three of them.

When in doubt, switch it out - the soil that is. Make sure you use the right soil for the right kind of plants. EG: Succulents need cactus and succulent soil. Herbs will need an indoor garden soil or mix or use garden soil mixed with house plant soil for indoor herbs. You'll also need to follow the same idea with fertilizers - herbs need vegetable fertilizer, house plants Miracle Grow or Peter's or some such. Don't feed too much or too often once a month and only a small amount the water should barely color at all with most fertilizers in the right dilution. Use the right size pot. Like kids plants grow out of their "clothes" so you will have to replace their pots and soil from time to time. Always use good soil mixes as they are usually free of diseases that could kill you plants. Make sure the pot itself is clean before potting or re-potting. Round, uncolored aquarium pebbles make great drainage material for the bottom inch of your pots, and activated charcoal pellets for aquariums can be mixed into those for even better results, both are sterile so won't bring in problems. Don't over water, don't underwater and those amounts and timings will be different with different types of plants and their soil. Make sure you plants get enough of the right light exposure. Plants can sunburn just like us, so don;t put your houseplants outside in the sun. That said, putting them on a shaded porch where the direct sun can't hit them can allow them to put on extra growth during the summer months. Sign me the plant lady - I used to work in a greenhouse and took care of plants in businesses in Silicon Valley.

I so relate to trying to be a plant mom and definitely still learning. While visiting our oldest son, he just taught me a very neat tip: Fill a glass bottle (a soda bottle, wine, etc.) with water and bury it turned upside-down in the potted plant. It will drink the water it needs. Haven't tried it yet but going to as soon as I get back home to my plant babies!

I've heard there are studies which indicate that singing or playing music to plants helps them to grow. Or you could try doing what Crowley did with his plants, which is encourage excellence thru public execution of his lackluster plants.

I am a out of control plant mom I have 500+ plants and they’re getting so big. I’m running out of room. In fact, I had to go up the walls for a lot of them and mount them with pot klips. I love my plants. My husband wants to have an intervention, but the jokes on him he loves them now too. We have a local sheriffs department and they have a program called the LIFE program in which inmates will grow plants. They sell 2 gallon plants for two dollars and 5 gallon plants for five dollars. I got huge fiddle leaf plants for five dollars each. Absolutely beautiful. This facility is located in Palmetto Florida.

You forgot to add a scene where you have the master gardener on speed dial. Haha. You do know your local master gardener right? Usually it is apart of a university program. You can call or email and ask all kinds of plant questions you have, and since they are in your area they know what kind of climate and soil and local pest you may have. They are especially helpful and a great resource.

I find succulents tricky because with other plants you can tell if you have under or over watered them by how they are drooping but I don't know if it is that I live in Canada and they don't like the climate or if once a month is too much or little water but they are the only type of plant I struggle with sometimes. Not all of them by a few of mine I just can't get a read on.

For an easy to care for plant, the cast iron plant. And they are easy to find in nurseries in the south. Called the cast iron plant by the Victorians because they could keep it in the parlor which was used ( and heated) occasionally. Good for low light areas.

So I had a plant named Freddy for a while... He died. I considered it a new stage in life for me, a monumental moment. I then adopted a little aloe plant, that I named Lewis Capaldi. I think I killed him too. I'm killing this whole plant thing... literally.
@elisabethramon33973 жыл бұрын
Aloes like to wait forever before they receive water. If you recently watered it and it’s leaves are squishy, hold off on the water. It has way too much. If you haven’t watered in a long time and it’s leaves are starting to get squishy it means it needs more water. I know that sounds contradictory, but it has worked for my aloe. Keep in mind that aloes are desert plants and are used to super dry arid places. Better to hold off on water than to over water. They like deep soaks then nothing for like months. My aloe is just now needing watered after four months of none. Also they like to be in small pots. My 2 foot wide aloe is in a 5inch pot and it loves it there.
