My dad would take our family of 7 on a three week fishing holiday every year. We would spend almost all day, every day, out in an old boat, on a river. Wealways caught lots of fish though! Poor guy spent so much time untangling our lines, especially my mums,lol. Best childhood memories ever!

Wisconsin here. My dad owns a boat and fishes all the time. We’d go out several times a year and then at least one vacation “up north.” He’d schedule special time with each of us - for me, it was bullhead fishing at night. We’d go out late (10pm?) and fish in the dark and quiet. My Dad would drink coffee - I distinctly remember the smell of his coffee - and we had to be quiet or we’d scare the fish. I’m 39 and my Dad is 77 - keep this up, I promise they will cherish these memories.

Taking my 5 kids fishing usually means I just bait hooks and take off fish! It’s a great time - more fun watching them catch than catching my own! In our area ice fishing is the best for kids. They can run around and they don’t have to hold the rod for hours! Happy fishing 🎣

My nephews are in their forties and still talk about Uncle Steve (my hubby) taking them fishing when they were little. And yes, they hooked poor Uncle who had to go to ER to get the hook out of his hand! He drove a stick shift left handed 30 miles to get there! Very accurate on how it all plays out. I learned long ago that going fishing with my kids is not much fun, but taking them and letting them go fishing got a better result for all of us. And take a extra rod or two so while you are detangling lines the kids can keep fishing.

I found that the way to enjoy taking the kids fishing when they were little was to leave my rod at home. Then I could pay attention to them, not get as frustrated, and didn't care if they wanted to go to the playground 5 minutes after we started. I think it was more enjoyable for them as well.

I remember going early in the morning with my dad fishing. He would always say "Now, we gotta be quiet or the fish will swim away."
