When I wake I'm always grateful and offer up a thank you. I see my day as getting tasks accomplished and if I don't, so what. The above people rarely cross my path and if they do, I observe them and their actions as having nothing to do with me. It's like observing a child having a meltdown. It's interesting to observe and not react. I learn something new each time. Telling yourself when you wake up you'll meet the above people is setting yourself up for a very stressful existence. Not productive.

Besides, these kind of people are all over the internet. But the answer is not to stoop to their level, or to become like them. You have to remain calm, cool, and collected. Be the change you want to see in the world. Act the same as them and you are just making humanity a worse place to be in. (Not telling you what to do, but this is how I see it.) I understand this, but as someone who grew up constantly bullied and tormented, I did all of these things (stayed quiet, ignored them) and was bullied even more and/worse than before. I am a strong advocate of choosing your battles, but there are times when you MUST state your boundaries and SPEAK UP for yourself. Not stoop to their level or engage in their energy, but standing up for yourself. Some people see "kindness" and "being the bigger person" as an invitation to continue their abuse. Stoicism in this sense isn't realistic, because abuse is mentally and physically deteriorating, and can become life threatening. Alot of victim blaming too.

Here are the actionable points summarise from the video: 1. Recognize that people have different perspectives and opinions, and it's natural to encounter difficult people in life. 2. Practice empathy by putting yourself in the other person's shoes to understand their motivations and intentions. 3. Focus on what you can control in the situation, such as your own reactions and emotions, and don't waste energy on things outside of your control. 4, Respond with kindness and respect, even if the other person is behaving badly, as this can defuse the situation and set a positive tone for future interactions. 5, Avoid reacting impulsively or emotionally, and take time to reflect on your thoughts and feelings before responding. 6. Recognize that negative people or situations can be opportunities for personal growth and learning, and use them as a chance to practice patience, resilience, and self-control. 7. Practice gratitude and mindfulness to cultivate a positive mindset and reduce stress. 8. Stay true to your own values and principles, even when dealing with difficult people, and don't compromise your integrity or moral compass. 9. Use setbacks or failures as opportunities to learn and improve, rather than as reasons to give up or become discouraged. I hope this helps!

Remember our common humanity (we could also be difficult people, be graceful) 4. Take Action (confront wirh humility and confidence) 5. Overcome Envy (distress, fear, lust, delight) - Don't put your happiness in the hands of others. *I think these things reflect Christian principles, even though the Bible is not their source. @@THE-WAY_THE-TRUTH_THE-LIFE. I agree with what you said about going with the flow and the rest, but to not have any expectations? That is self neglectful at times. For example, you need to have expectations that function as standards for how people should act towards you so you do not allow them to take advantage of you and/or bully you on a stretch period of time. And you need to uphold expectations for yourself too. But that doesn't mean eliminating compassion, empathy and logical thinking aswell. As per many things, expectations (and maybe even selfishness) are not inherently positive nor negative, it is the way in which they are treated that determines so. Wish u all the best

At 7:55, the question is asked, "Is a world without shamelessness possible?". IMHO, perhaps not during the days that Marcus Aurelius lived in, but in our present world, especially when it comes to a great many of the people who are in power today, I'm not so sure. I believe that our world is becoming an evil place because of the actions of a small number of people at the very top who have no morality at all. They are drunk on power and all that they desire is more power and control over us. If their actions and agenda are not put into check soon, destruction will follow. Anyway, this is a video that all who are trying to work on the side of goodness, should watch. There is a treasure trove of wisdom within this video. Excellent philosophy up to a point. As an emperor he had the prerogative to exercise many of these teachings. But as I said, up to a point. This very remarkable man also went to war, which demonstrates it’s impractical to put into practice at all times some of what he taught. There is that time to “turn the other cheek.” However there is a time to draw the line or be taken for a fool and be abused because others think you are soft. For this very reason nations are vigorously competing to create the best weapons. Philosophy is all well and good. But practicality is altogether a different matter. Much to be admired about stoicism anyway.

When somebody wants to use you to feel better about themselves Just before they start their mental warfare look at them in a really concerned way and ask them if they are all right and why they look like they are about to cry and if there's anything you can do to make them feel better and watch them disintegrate like they don't know where they are or what to do next and that's because they're utterly convinced that they're mean mugging will get a fear response from you but instead you will have given them a complex causing them to go back to spending many hours in front of the mirror before they try and pull their shit again.

Think with your head not your heart. Take emotion out of it. See people for what they really are, not what TV or society has brainwashed you into thinking they are. And understand that 99% of the time when someone gets pissed off at you or are angry, it’s not at you, it’s something in their life. I let them rant, and when they’re finished I ask.... what are you really upset about? That puts them back on their heels. 99 times out of 100, the reason they are upset isn’t you, it’s something in their personal life.

"Has the insult really harmed you?" That's the thing nowadays. Yes, it can harm you and not just in your mind. If someone or a group calls you a certain buzzword negative name, you can be canceled socially and possibly lose friends and jobs. I'd love to know what Marcus would say about this toxic cancel culture that has been going around for the last several years. It's very sad.

In most corporate environments ones positive behaviour don't bring about positive change but rather expose you to exploitation and is naive, it can be more complex the more relationships a working environment present
@66NOI773H3 жыл бұрын
Is this your thoughts of what could happen speaking to you, nobody can exploit you unless you allow it. You have to apply contemporary intelligence to the ancient wisdom, there are many environments that did not exist in ancient times that modern man comes into contact with daily. Again, you are in control, maybe acorporate job is not something that fits 'you'. It is always about improving you, you can do nothing to change another to your will and should avoid wasting time on such useless endeavors. Always take the higher path of self-improvement. It is never more complex than you are willing to deal with. One of the most powerful tools you have with you at all times is that of silence, turning around and walking away, giving them nothing of you. Sure they will say stupid things, maybe do stupid things, but you always have the choice if you will go to 'their' battlefield to fight them. Another great quote is: 'choose your battles wisely' know when a battle is a smart choice and when it is not. It feels as though your real concern is being exploited and being perceived as naive and an easy target for such, not improving yourself. With improvement comes realizations you will not get without the improvements to yourself. Another quote: 'Don't throw pearls before swine'. Swine cannot understand the intrinsic value of pearls and would probably just crush them as they devoured them along with everything else never comprehending what they had done. From Marcus: 'Never let yourself be heard to complain of the work to oneself for improvement!' (not an exact quote, but I believe conveys th message accurately) One's positive behavior will bring about positive chnge to you directly, and by example possibly others will see an image of strong character and courage in the face of adversity and so much more it might shock you to know how many you may well influence onto your same path, daring to be courageous as you are. So many people are looking for this very thing, especially with the state of affairs as they are. People are confused, frightened, unsure of themselves, not sure what will happen next, and the corporate environment is indeed a place that is designed to promote conflict and adversity. View it as the gladiator arena it is and each morning wake and the first thing you do is suit up, placing youe armor and shields on your mental and emotional body, readying yourslef for th horrific battles that will sure rage all the day and part of th night long, bloody and unforgiving, with savagery that would make Ghengis Khan puke and cry, envision the horrors, the double and triple crosses, the set-ups and evil manipulations, all will be there waiting for you every day! Prepare yourself or if this is too much for your heart and soul, and for many it is way too much, it is the better, wiser and self-fulfilling ambition to find your true calling. Not everyone is able to be a gladiator in the prime arena, but just as worthwhile, not everyone is able to be a school teacher, a poet, an artist or musician, or just an averge man with normal ambitions who just wishes to be happy in his own skin and with himself! Many believe this last to be the required predecessor to all of the others. But most importantly, absolutely the cornerstone of all of this is you must come to terms with yourself on these things and then immediately pursue it directly everyday, all day. Do not waste what little time you are given, everything requires putting the effort in. I came from such an environment, battled within it ferociously seven days a week, determined to never stop until I made it or died trying. A third option reared it graceful head, experience taught me I was very good at the arena, but even better at another skill. It is much more gratifying and I am happier doing what I do now every day, then my best day of fighting in the corporate arena. Corporation means (loosley) 'To give life to!' They are so much just that, a lifeless monster in which arcane documents and manuscripts and approval of various and nefarious agents must all come together to imbue this abomination with a false life without a true soul or the betterment of mankind in its lifeblood. More of a parasitic, life sucking competition to the death requiring non-entity of zombie-like humanity-, lol!feasting evil! What you so pursue so shall you become with daily repetiton thereof!!! (Lucky for humanity, we can switch horses mid-stream without a hitch! (Pardon the pun!) *** In the hopes this gives you something you may utilize to your own benefit ***

Well, in the wisdom of Stoicism and writings of Marcus Aurelius, the internet is just loaded with the type of people you should be forewarning yourself you will encounter. The internet is something Marcus may or may not have anticipated, but the wisdom still applies and is very effective. My first initial feeling (emotional) was to engage some of the commentors in a manner that would easily set them straight, (if they were capable of understanding what I would have said!) but having been working towards a better, simpler life for a time, I was able to easily remind myself that I am in control of my actions, thoughts and feelings, when it is their time to grow those needed will come to them. It's ironic, really, that here in these comments even, we are given the opporunity to strengthen ourselves and make our world a little bit better place, through and for ouselves! The most liberating experience in my existence!!!

Sometimes I guess I am the problem...I know that I have a problem telling others "what to do"...I am old and into physical fitness and watching what I eat (although far from being Charles Atlas). I just gave my seriously overweight nephew a "lecture" on watching what he eats, caloric deficiency, strength training and walking for aerobic exercise. I know that I come across as a smart a$$/know it all. I need to work harder on this. However, it is difficult for me NOT TO pass on good/successful experiences.

Sorry I hit the wrong button. Was about to say that I have had experience trying to advise younger ppl since I have learned a lot in my experience in my 75 years. However, hardly anyone cares what us older folks have to say about life. So now I accept the fact that everybody IS ON THEIR OWN PATH (destiny) and it really isn't my place to interfere. I'm less frustrated and they don't have to put up with this old lady's "lectures".

This is all fine knowledge except when it's applied in the context of abuse by other humans. Stoicsm shouldn't be applied as a list of rules to closely follow, but reminders of the human condition. If this is followed as a set of rules, it would be easy to fall victim to physical, emotional, or other kinds of abuse fairly easy, with no solution to get out of it. Abuse is never to be managed, but exposed and dealt with. Just my 2 cents.
@mattwright97653 жыл бұрын
If these examples were to be followed as a set of rules, it would render emotional/verbal "abuse" ineffective. I suggest looking into Stoicism further, especially with techniques like framing and tending to matters that one can actually control, and disregarding those that one can't control.
@mattwright97653 жыл бұрын
@Tracchofyre you make a good point, but an Emperor could merely exert their power and authority to shut people up or rely exclusively on the privileges of his title, but instead he used Stoicism to bolster his character.
