David Paulides doesn’t update cases, and he omits facts that are inconvenient to the overarching narrative he obviously pushes. I think he does important work, but he’s not perfect. I’ve hiked Vesper and let me tell you saying it is difficult is a huge understatement. It is super steep and long, very exposed and parts where there’s really no trail and huge cliffs. Lots of places to fall and not get found. My heart goes out to anyone who knew Sam as it is tragic, but I honestly think this is quite explainable. There are reports of her descending the other side of vesper and that place was so rugged I doubt anyone would be found in that place.
@CodieV Жыл бұрын
I totally agree. A girl I once knew actually got lost there after slipping down a steep incline due to slippery trail/mud. She was found by search and rescue 24 hours later, but when she talks about her experience it seems like they really found her by sheer luck. It is incredibly dangerous in some parts, and she was an experienced hiker already.

This is the problem with positioning a lot of these cases as unexplainable. A lot of them are explainable. People don't always realize how big these areas are or how dangerous or how easy it is to get lost in nature.
@serialshagster6651 Жыл бұрын
@@frances9975 most people understand that and so does SAR! These people are highly trained Individuals. Sometimes with experienced search dogs that cannot find a scent trail. SAR doesn't play around, they search everything. If you have never been with them while sear hing then you may not get it, but I have so I know how it is searched. Nothing is left unturned. Also, how do you account for someone being on the trail heading in, dead, five days after the search has ended? It's not just that they went missing. You can't just vanish, regardless of how rugged an area is, or how easy it may be to get lost in any one area.
@jacstackz Жыл бұрын

The more I delve into Missing 411 cases, the more convinced I am that there's something more sinister going on. The problem I have with all the 'plausible' explanations for these disappearances is that it's not just that these people simply 'go missing', but that they seem to vanish without trace... even predators, serial killers, accidental falls, injuries etc. would leave behind a trace of SOMETHING... a murder weapon, blood, DNA, remains, scent, torn clothing, footprints, tire marks... something... but the thing that most of these cases have in common is that these people seem to just stop existing... like even their footprints and scent just... stop? You can't convince me that's not worthy of further investigation.

A lot of folks need to remember that actual Missing 411 cases that Paulides talks about are so strange because rational answers have been exhausted. Those that make the criteria are bizarre in the fact that animal attack, human involvement/foul play, getting lost, etc. just don't answer what happened to these people. No trace of them after thorough searches that cover a huge perimeter that they wouldn't have been able to get out of in the timeframe, search dogs stopping in the middle of tracking and refusing to go on or like the scent just stopped like the person just flew away, those that are found are sometimes on the other side of a mountain range and barefoot way out of the range of what they could have physically made it and especially barefooted, people disappearing almost right in front of others they are with and yet no trace of them is ever found.
@dazed1nyc Жыл бұрын
The strangest one to me is Carl Landers who vanished on Mt Shasta. It was a snow covered mountain, full visibility, the guy leaves the camp to start walking, his friends turns around for a moment, turns back and the guy is gone. Footprints in the snow just stop in the middle of nothing. Almost every other story, although weird in their own way, involves the missing person being alone or in the woods or a creak or river nearby soo as unlikely as the possibilities may be, at least there are some options. This guy had really only one direction he could go besides the way they all just came from and any steps taken would have been visible in the snow. The guy just vanished mid step it seems like.

But what was normal soon faded and fear took over Jill when at 10am Jill’s friend happened to call and mentioned she just saw Tim’s truck at the plaza around where the bagel shop was. Jill quickly verified that Tim never arrived at work and when around looking for Tim. he didn’t home by supper time. Searches and investigations over the following days and weeks yielded nothing. Still nothing to this day 12 years later. My friend insists his cousin wouldn’t have ever disappeared on purpose, and thinks he probably ran into some sort of foul play m. I found it especially creepy that nothing was ever found, no personal items, no scent being picked up by search dogs, even helicopters and drones where employed…there where hiking trails on the area to the south …cold case from the start. I even accidentally went off trail and almost got stranded in freezing rain conditions, but I climbed my way back to the trail and made it to safety, albeit in poor condition. But I made it. Nothing will ever deter me from nature, accompanied or solo. I have a strong feeling a good number of these folks disappear intentionally. I've thought about it myself.

People take these things too close to heart. Just use common sense when you do go in the wilderness and be prepared…don’t be too scared to leave your house or live your life.

Not that any missing persons case doesn't creep me out, but.... what was so creepy about these particular 5? I've heard and read about much, much creepier cases.
@loretta_3843 Жыл бұрын
These people seem to all be described as experienced. The single thing they have in common is being out hiking. Goes to show you can never take this activity for granted and the most dangerous thing is actually being out there alone.
@designingtheenemy5869 Жыл бұрын
I often wonder how different some of these stories would be if these people had a concealed carry firearms license.
@leequinn2733 Жыл бұрын
There are many missing hunters, many highly trained, experienced. Paulides covered this. Whatever it is gets the upper hand and quickly, so very few have heard 3 warnings shots to alert for "help needed please come over". They and all their equipment goes missing. I truly believe some of these case are either intentional or accidental killings (either by friend or foe) covered up, killer hikes miles away from scene of crime. Others just don't make sense. Exp. Mel Nadel, Stanley Vigil.

Not sure why these are the top 5. They are bog standard disappearances. 100s of people vanish without a trace each year. There are no auxiliary circumstances which make these cases extraordinary

Not saying it's what happened at all but I found it interesting that the Sam's boyfriend's story seemed to cover all the tracks if he was involved somehow. He normally hiked with her but was unable due to a previously unknown work engagement. It sounds like he got off work early enough to be at home waiting for Sam around 6pm when she said she'd be home. Then instead of immediately calling authorities for a search, he decides to go out himself at night to look over a massive area of rugged mountain, which would conveniently explain any tracks or evidence of him at any crime scene there. Again, not pointing fingers or assigning blame because I'm sure this poor woman fell or got lost and it's as simple as that but it is an avenue police should have probably ruled out, if they didn't.

I was surprised to hear her mother list him doing something to her as one of the likely scenarios. She must've come to that conclusion somehow with something happening with them etc.

I was suspicious of BF too. But the witnesses that saw her alone there show he wasn’t with her on the hike. But who knows 🤷🏽♀️

It's outrageous that we have GPS chips for cars and dogs but not for humans. Imagine all the heartache and grief we could avoid with a simple chip or bracelet. Children would be instantly located. Abductions would cease because you fond someoneI, in minutes.,. I've read that 60% of law enforcement budgets go to missing persons. The manpower used for the lost children is immense.
@Gu3ssWhatsN3XT Жыл бұрын
I doubt abductions would stop. It’s a nice idea on paper that they’ve already been talking about for years but I doubt a lot of people would really be down for them

Disappearances in national parks is not unique to the U.S. There's been a few in Australia that I've heard of over the years. About 10 years back a 50 year old experienced in this sort of environment went missing and no trace at all has ever be found.. He was employed as the top person in a large men's prison. No surprise there's been all sorts of theories.

Stuff can go downhill so fast out in the woods by yourself. Just watch some videos of ppl falling in crevices or getting lost. Ppl die faster than you think. Especially if they are injured.

Can't remember the name but some guy and his dog went missing while on a hike. He wasn't found but the dog WAS, high up on a mountain ledge accessible only if the dog had mountaineering experience and could climb a mountain sort of like some goats can. Lol! I swear I read this. The dog didn't say how he got there. Of course authorities were baffled! Gotta laugh sometimes!

She’s not the only one to go missing from Darnell Vista under strange circumstances with their cars left behind, and they were nowhere to be found. It was another lady and a man, not together, at separate times. I believe the guy, but I might be mistaken, that was found at the bottom of the gorge weeks after the search ended, and that place was searched extensively for two weeks, and there’s no way he was there when they were searching. That’s just a strange place, and Dave Paulides talks about all three cases.

Hetch Hetchy is truly a wild place, and I mean that figuratively and literally. My grandparents have lived just a few miles down the mountain from there since before I was born and it's a weird place
