My fav rediscovery story of an once believed extinct animal is the crested gecko because from what I gather they were thought extinct for over 100 years until one of them literally just... showed up randomly during a storm. Now about 30 years after their rediscovery they're one of the most popular reptile pets in the entire world.

One species that was rediscovered is the beautiful Harlequin toad (Atelopus Varius) from the cloud forest’s of Costa Rica/ Panama. This species and most others in the genus Atelopus has been absolutely devastated by the Chytrid fungus since the 1980’s. This species was feared extinct until small isolated populations were discovered over the years in its former range.

Another species that was rediscovered was the palos verdes blue butterfly. It was believed to be extinct after it lost the remainder of it's habitat when the city decided to build a baseball field. The city's lawyers managed to find a loophole in the endangered species act and the city got away with it. The endangered species act was rewritten as a result.

@@BigJFindAWay Thanks, Chinese Alligators are critically endangered, it would be sad to lose such a species due to the ignorance of man, considering that Japan doesn't have crocodilians, outside of captivity, the Chinese Alligator would be a perfect species for reintroduction, since it used to live there in the past, plus there might be a chance that if it were to happen along with consistent conservation, the Chinese Alligator might rebound and in time, be as populous as its American counterpart

Sorry, but the Miller's Grizzled Langur was rediscovered in 2011 by a team of researchers led by Brent Loken, they took the photos of it that confirmed it was still extant, that were shown in the episode of Extinct or Alive, despite what Forrest states in that programme, I don't believe his claim that the species was extinct or allegedly extinct stacks up, it was merely the case that no one had been back to the Wehea Forest to check on the monkeys, that doesn't mean it was believed to be extinct. I think he knew perfectly well that it wasn't really considered extinct and therefore he would have a very high chance of finding it. All he and his team did was obtain the first ever video footage of the monkeys, Brent Loken has accused him of lying, in taking credit for rediscovering the monkey and I have to agree, Forrest Galante is unfortunately not an honest person, this might explain why he appears to be now just making KZbin videos rather than proper TV shows. I'm afraid many scientists and conservationists around the world, if they are aware of his reputation, will not be willing to work with him, Miller's Grizzled Langur is just one example of him taking credit for other people's discoveries or work.

Fern needs to be bred with other related subspecies because even though the offspring won't be pure Fernandinas at least the genetics will live on. These offspring can be reintroduced to Fernandinho if Fern is somehow found to truly be the last. If she isn't the last and males are found, then her offspring can be brought to other islands that have no tortoises.

I wouldn't put money on many of them being still extant, except arguably the Cape Lion, since genetics demonstrates that it was not a valid subspecies, it was just a population of African lions that lived in the Cape, on that basis it is not extinct, genetically it was the same as other lions found in Southern and East Africa, and since lions have been reintroduced to parks and reserves in the Cape, they are technically Cape Lions. Although some of the research dates from this year, I am sure Forrest Galante was aware that many people did not consider the Cape Lion to be a valid subspecies, at the time that he was looking for it..
