I used take our two guard dogs for a walk at Cherry Hill Park, which was close to our business, after work. My boss would drive us there and pick us up at a certain time. We did this for years without an incident. One day I was dropped off as usual with the dogs, brothers Thor and Apollo, Bouviers, not a small breed by any means. We were to be picked up in two hours so we did some exploring, which lead us deep into the woods. Cherry Hill is a huge area with marked trails, bridges over streams and wooden trails leading through swampland, and many hills. What we didn't consider that day was daylight savings time. Darkness seemed to settle over us quickly and I was no longer able to see anything in front of me and had no idea where we were. Being in the woods in total darkness is quite scary. At one point we could hear rustling on either side of us and I had both dogs stuck to my legs in fear. They were both big sweeties. We stumbled around a bit for a while, totally lost, when I gave up and told Thor to go home. From then on we just followed him and he took us to our rendezvous point. My boss was there, quite angry, he'd been waiting for us for more than an hour and was really worried and told me that he wasn't impressed that "I was just fooling around in the woods." Something totally unexpected can happen at any time, it's quite amazing just how many people go missing every year. David Paulides looks into this phenomenon and has written books about it, as well as produced videos on the subject.

Regarding Melissa in case 1: 2pm feels awfully late to begin a hike that you dont intend to stay out overnight for, especially in december. I dont see a backpack in the cctv footage. Could any hikers weigh in on whether this is strange behavior?
@FrogsForBreakfast Жыл бұрын
Depends on how long the hike is. Two or three miles can be done in an hour depending on terrain and hiking style. Sunset in Victoria in December is right after 4pm, so anything more risks being out after dark. Hills make dark shadows so I would take that into account. Also mud, steep terrain, overcast skies that make it look darker earlier, heavy tree cover, etc. And I would really really need to know how well marked the trails were. I don't want to risk getting lost on poorly marked trails, especially not with only a few hours of sunlight and alone. I would just avoid poorly marked trails near sunset in general unless I was extremely familiar with the trail, like walk it blindfolded in any season level familiar.

There was a case of a woman who went jogging and slipped off the trail fell a few feet down a cliff and was found deceased about a year later her leg was broken in 2 places, Jerika Binks was her name. The other was an older lady who also slipped and fell but due to snow I think she wasn't found until months later. Those are 2 that spring to mind.

Re: Melissa - it is terrifyingly easy to become disoriented in a forested area. There was an incident recently here on VI where a hiker was lost for three days, not only was he an experienced hiker, but it was an area that he’d hiked in numerous times before. Fortunately, it was mild weather and he had the gear he needed to survive and he kept his head, but it shows that one should never take nature for granted. In Melissa’s case, prepared for only a day hike, in December, if she went off the marked trail her chances would not be good.

Is it possible that when the two motors on Gumas boat snapped apart or whatever happened that it jolted the boat and if he happened to be sitting on the back of the driver's seat instead of in the actual seat, which I have seen many boat drivers do, he got dumped in the water perhaps hitting his head on the way over or the boat hitting his head after he was in the water knocking him out and that would explain why he did not make it back onboard.
