I don't let trends dictate what I wear. I just get excited when something I like becomes trendy so it's more available. But I'll wear what I like even if it seems "out of style" or even "dated"

My biggest mistakes per say, are shopping for special events- a wedding, graduation, special dinner, holiday, or vacation and buy things I would never wear again. I’m trying to change that. Trying to buy things for special occasions that I will wear again.

In my early 20’s I worked in retail and would literally buy anything that came in if it was “cute enough” because I got a discount. Now that I’m a mom and a professional I’m trying to really find the balance between my practical style but also timeless and classy pieces. I realized one day at work I felt the MOST confident in jeans that fit me very well, a white cotton button down and loafers. I got so many compliments and I just knew this was the feeling I want to have when wearing my clothes.

I think many women are attracted to a piece they see on someone else but don't recognize the COLOR is all wrong. Or believe that they can only look exciting via bold colors. You and I have almost identical skin tone and hair color, and I appreciate how much you don't wear pieces that overpower that coloring. You come across as a 'subtle knockout.' And let's hear it for the 'ash brown hair' girls.😉

The things I bought in the past and always regretted were items that looked good on me, but that I do not find comfortable to wear. They would get me a lot of compliments of how good they look on me but I would be uncomfortable in them 😑 For example a skirt that keeps riding up, a top that I find a bit too short for my liking or a strapless dress that keeps sliding down or a pants that digs in my stomach (looking at you highrise pants 😂) So annoying 😑 I would be pulling at my clothes all day if I wear them. So in the end, they usually stay in the closet 🤷‍♀️ Now the «is it comfortable?» question is the one I always ask before buying anything 🤗

I think you hit the nail on the head with all of these issues. I think most of us can relate to most if not all of them (or at least I can). One of the things that surprised me at 50 and having years of experience in the fashion industry is that no matter how much experience you have or how confident you are with your style, we can all lose our selves when it comes to our fashion sense. Social media and advertising bombard us constantly with images and then Life happens, priorities change, and all of us could use a fashion life coach like you Bethany. I could not agree more with your philosophy of quality over quantity and that is why I enjoy your channel so much. You have led me to brands that are of a higher quality and that I would never have heard of otherwise. I can truly say that the pieces that I invested in and planned for and really thought about with intention are the ones I value the most. I have pieces in my wardrobe that are from 30 years ago and if I told you that I bought them yesterday you would believe it due to the quality of the garment. The biggest mistake I can still tend to make is impulse buying and that usually leads to regret. There could be a lot to be said about the impulse buy and why it is a psychological trap. Save that for another video! Best wishes, Amy

I've been struggling between the wardrobe I want (that isn't me at all) and what I'll actually wear. I've kept things that I love, but honestly don't have any place to wear them. So they sit there, wasting space (even though they come out for the occasional trip around the closet during a rainy day dress up session). The best advice I've heard lately is pick three words that signify your style and purchase things that only fall within those words (mine are edgy, romantic, and classic).

I can relate so much to your depiction of the worth of $10.. I've been there, not too long ago. I am someone who came from a very middle class Indian family owning only the required items and then suddenly became one who had everything in excess once I got my job. My biggest issue right now is that I'm really motivated to find and wear my personal style, but I'm too scared of making a mistake purchase and too focused on making the "perfect" plan that I don't buy anything (I also moved countries so I don't know what shops are right for me in terms of quality level + price point). I'm also a knitter and learning to sew, so I feel like instead of buying something I could make it and it will be "perfect", but that's so slow and especially since my sewing skills aren't there yet, so my wardrobe barely changes. As a result of all this, I feel like my current style that I wear is barely changing and I'm not making any progress. I need to give myself permission to do some shopping and also make a solid roadmap for my sewing and knitting makes, so I can see progress to what I imagine my style to be.

I think I'm at the age that, trends not really bothering me anymore, comfort must come first, and sales are not that much exciting anymore.haha, there's always someone in the back of my mind saying, like" where will you wear that?, Do you really need that?"..thank you Bethany, think you influenced me a lot.. everytime I open my wardrobe, I feel happy, haha. Thankfully I have usually always not been one for trends. I have to genuinely like something (trendy or not) to want to wear or own it. My one trendy mistake was an Lv bag (always bags) but I still use it occasionally cause its a nice bag. I am working now on having a good balance between basics and more elevated pieces. And wearing less jeans - more mature and casual classy looks.

I am finally allowing myself to invest in pieces and intentionally plan out pieces even if they are more expensive than what I perceive I can afford. Something that really stuck with me as I revisited your style course was to think about budgeting for my style. Sure! I can go and buy 5 items of clothing that could be super practical but I probably already have something similar. Now I know that I can plan ahead and budget for one nicer thing a month and slowly and intentionally build a better wardrobe of timeless pieces that will elevate my overall life. I’ve put a lot of effort lately into buying clothes but I’m still making mistakes. Like keeping expensive shoes that on reflection are too small, or an expensive trench coat that I loved in the changing room but in reality it’s a bit too trendy and at almost floor-length, I think wears me rather than the other way around. It makes me feel quite uneasy and regretful due to wasting so much money and as though I don’t deserve to risk having nice things because I keep making these mistakes. I am also finding it hard to know exactly what suits me because, due to sensory issues, I can’t wear clothes that are too fitted or restrictive and also body shape affects what works on you even if your height for example dictates a particular fit/length. Also, I sometimes feel as though I can never even get a capsule wardrobe in place because things happen - I shrunk a load of quite expensive knitwear when I had covid and sleep deprivation and the other day I found a favourite T-shirt had holes in etc. I feel so good when I’m wearing something I feel nice in and proud of but it often feels like a struggle to get there and as though my physique doesn’t allow for the level of style I would like.

My fight with clothing is why do I wear something to death? It makes me happy, of course, to wear it often but I don’t know when I should let it go, and maybe then I look really bad? 😮‍💨 Well, to me I feel really bad. One time I had a wonderful military green jacket with a furry collar. It washed so well and looked new forever, but the more I wore it, the more I felt ashamed of myself. Since I took the dog out every morning, I began to feel self conscious about it. My thought began, “do you think the neighbors think you sleep on the couch, because they see you out of their windows with the same clothing.” It just got worse and worse, I felt horrible. That was it! That was motivation to let go of the wonderful jacket that served me so well in the winters! But it’s the same problem with everything! I have to know when to let things go, before the bad feeling sets in. After that, I replaced it with a long brown fur coat and I wore it in rain, snow, cleaning snow off of others’ cars. I took it to the dry cleaners, and I don’t know what they did, but it looks shiny and new again. 🙈 The only coats I can get rid of is the ones that become lint traps and catch cat hair, that when you go into a store and you walk by all the fur and lint jumps off the coat and onto the pristine black clothes on the racks. 🙊! Those times it’s so easy getting rid of things! 😹 No one ever makes videos on when it’s time to let things go! 😸😂

Accessories. I love basic clothes because #1. they're a canvas for accessories and #2. even if I don't wear any accessories but earrings, basic clothes don't draw attention to themselves; they let me be me. You should wear your clothes, not the other way around, and attention-getting clothes often wear you. It's possible, though, that you're a Dramatic or Romantic kibbe type, who tend to look blah in basics. Accessories can really change it up. For a Dramatic, something geometric and bold. For a Romantic, something lacy or floral would be a good choice.

Maybe you're a Dramatic kibbe type? Dramatics need statement clothing, because basics tend to look boring on them. I think the same thing holds true for a lot of Romantic types. So it might just be your instincts, not a fault.

Another great on point video from you. You have actually helped me change my style even before I take your class. Or rather: You have made me realize how much I like a certain style. Having said that I do fall into the too boring staples category if I don't watch myself. My life is changing dramatically these days and I have to adjust my wardrobe 😐 Hope your leg is mending as it should.

Great advice, thank you so much. I recognised myself in the "too many statement items" category. I feel like a lot of the times, I'm able to appreciate how a piece looks on a model and the vibe it creates, but I forget that it might not be what I'm personally looking for.

I am a Canadian viewer and find that whenever I would love to invest in a piece that Bethany links in the description, there are insane import and shipping fees. Do any fellow Canadians know how I could avoid those fees, or know of a store in Canada that carries the brands that Bethany recommends? Thanks! 🔆

Yes!! I feel the same too. I’ve started to create a list of what I like and then when I’m shopping locally I look for that style. OR I seriously think of the piece Is worth the cost over a couple weeks and that justifies the cost if I can’t find it somewhere else

Amazing video, I like your dress, is it short or long? because I’m 5.1 and I like this type of drsses but honestly I feel that they overwhelm my pettite frame , what do you think?
